“Nice Resort w/ Poor Quality Food”

We stayed here as part of a concert tour package this past weekend. I travel 200+ nights for business. Lifetime platinum status with several large US hotel chains. 2 million miles on Delta. SUMMARY Target market seems to be value customer looking for beach/pool and unlimited food/drinks, but not necessarily an intimate experience with fine touches and high quality experiences PROs - Clean resort w/ higher quality finishes in common areas - People are friendly, willing and ready to serve with a smile - Beach sand and water access nice and accessible - Coba building ocean front terrace jacuzzi - room was standard room w/ king bed, two day beds, small toilet area and nice shower w/ rainhead good water pressure - 1 hour from CUN - Ruins, cenotes, Akumal, Playa del Carmen all 20-30 minutes from location - Resort spans 3.5 - 4.0 km round trip when using pletiful sidewalks along beach and front lobbies of property so great for walking/running - Parking seemed limited, but always available and steps away from front lobbies - never a problem parking a rented suburban CONs - Food quality at 4 buffets & Strikers is worse than Denny's. McDonalds is better. Wife and I seriously debated this and came to this conclusion. - Food safety and handling procedures are unacceptable - personnel handling raw meat and then touching swinging doors with hand and grabbing fresh fruit cart - Not intimate, 2,700 units, 5 pools, 5 lobbies - 5 large resorts put together - Large southern pool water temperature was low 80's F - cold - Rooms are loud, plexiglass patio door windows with no seals on frame so hear neighbors on balcony/deck as if they are laying in bed with you - Front desk operations very, very slow - room keys didn't work on first attempts so returned to get new keys - two agents serving two customers in front of us. We were next up and it took 15 minutes or longer. - Confirmed inclusive packages are not for us given low value of food and desire to get off property everyday for lunch/dinners and private excursions Not the worst experience. Not a low quality resort. Just massive, with very poor quality food and would never recommend to friends - ever.

“Horrible First Impression, Beautiful Grounds, and then Sickness”

This review is based on a trip that was taken in July of 2016. A group of myself and five other booked three ocean view rooms at the Barcelo Colonial. When we first arrived at Barcelo Colonial, the staff couldn't find our reservation. When they found our reservation, they had told us that our rooms were over at Barcelo Beach. We were a bit hesitant because we booked and paid for the Colonial, so we had asked to stay there. After an hour of waiting around, they finally admitted that the Colonial had been over-booked so there was no way of staying there. They assured us that the Maya Beach was an upgrade since it was newly renovated. We agreed to stay at Barcelo Beach, but then it took another hour for them to find three rooms with king sized beds. We finally get our three rooms, get to the rooms, and they gave us the wrong keys. At this point, we are extremely frustrated but just want to start our vacation. Getting over the check-in incident, the rooms were newly renovated like they mentioned and the grounds were beautiful. The staff keeps the hotel grounds and rooms clean. The beach was also absolutely beautiful. There is plenty of pool space and restaurants to choose from. The one complaint about the bar is that they were slow in getting drinks. Now to the worst part of the trip. Four days in, everything is going great until one of us gets very sick. She has a fever and can't hold any food in. The next day, the second of us gets sick with the same thing. When we got back home a day later, two others got sick with the same. Four out of the six of us caught some sort of stomach bug. My fiance was sick for two months after returning home (no exaggeration) and had to go to the doctors/hospital almost every week. We've been to Mexico twice before without any issue with eating the food or drinking at the resort. There was something at this resort that got us sick because we stayed on the resort the entire time. I will never be returning to this resort, and unfortunately for them will never be recommending this to anyone.

“Great Stay - Family of 4”

Enjoyed our 7 day trip to the Barceló Maya Beach. We travelled with our 2 kids, age 5 and 7. They enjoyed the kids club and really enjoyed the waterpark located in the center of the property. The property is well laid out, clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was good and there was enough of a variety to satisfy everyone. The beach is beautiful. The staff do a great job of keeping the beach, pool and the grounds clean.

“Don't go for the rooms...but good location and vacation”

The lobby area is nothing special. The people at the front desk don't appear very happy but most are friendly enough. A few border on rude. The customer service people who book the a la carte's seem to hate people...not sure why. The rooms are dated and not in great shape. Ours flooded from the shower against the but. Apparently there was a leak from the "tub" that ran out into the room. They fixed it with caulking but afterwards i notices the rotting wood on the floor so it wasn't the first time it had happened. The fixes are not permanent. They need to take time to actually tear it out and fix it all properly. The beds are hard. Not unusual for resorts i find now. The bathroom was small. Not for 2 people to get ready around a sink type rooms. The grounds were beautiful though. The local wild life easily seen on the paths in day and at night. The grounds crews were much friendlier than the front desk staff. Adult only pool was great until the partying younger groups showed up. Including the 20 year olds who were clearly trying to have sex in the pool/hot tub area. Proved a bit difficult until she just decided she didn't care if people knew. Then they had no issue and quietly left afterwards. Can't fault them i suppose. Bartenders were great in the adult pool area. took great care of you. Beds in the area were not utilized as they cost $20 and few wanted to pay to lay on a slab of concrete (they were hard). Beach area was very nice but water was always churned up. Not clear. difficult to snorkel in the ocean unless over by the wharf area. Lots of fish over by the wharf though. Rays along the beach so just be careful where you step. Sand on the beach was great. Bit of rock in the water though so be careful where you step. Further left you went the worse it got. Mall was a waste of time. Very pushy sellers. looking was not an option. They never stopped trying to sell. And walking away took work. The italian a la carte wasn't worth the time. The steakhouse was decent. Not what i'd get in Canada but not bad. Waiters are friendly enough at the steakhouse. Italian they had a hard time understanding what we wanted/asked for. I ordered off the French version as they English version didn't contain what was on the French menu. Odd. The fruit was fantastic. Buffets were very good. Generally didn't have a problem finding something to eat. Grills at the pool/beach were ok but not great. depended on day and time you arrived to eat. freshness meant everything at the grill. The main pool area was clean and it was a nice pool. close to the beach so one person could stay here and the other could go try to snorkel in the churned up beach water. The beach "looked" fantastic. Swimming was a bit more a challenge given how rough the water was. It was always rough. Considering there was a reef just off shore it was a bit rougher than it should have been. I'd recommend the Colonial part of this 5 plex. Similar price and the rooms and lobby seemed better. The Beach rooms were just low quality. Food at all of them were similar. shared a la cartes. So you're not getting anything much better from one to the other....other than perhaps the Palace. Everything costs if you do it on this resort. Nothing is free/included. Be careful as the ocean equipment is all third party companies. Resort takes no responsibility for them or their business practices. The excursions are great. Recommend Akumal and Ek Belam as well as the Cenote Maya experience. Fantastic all of them.

Thank you for the time you spent to share your feedback on your recent stay at our Barceló Maya Beach. It is also with great concern that we have read your comments on our réception team as it is renowned in the hospitality industry that the first 10 minutes at the réception and the last 10 upon check out contribute greatly to the reputation of a hotel; please be assured that your comments have been shared with the concerned managers so they can make the appropriate adjustments in the areas you mentioned. Regarding the size of the rooms we regret your disappointment however we would like to point out that we have different room categories at disposal and all accommodations are thoroughly described on our website. Please be assured that your comments will be taken into serious consideration and that they will help us to improve our services. Once again, thank you for your time and despite the issues you have raised following your stay, we hope that Barceló will remain an option for your next holiday and that we will have the opportunity to restore your faith in our company in the near future. “Fantastic Family Resort”

Just got back from 5 days at the Maya Beach. My wife and I and two teens just loved it. The service is great, the room was super clean and quiet, the grounds are perfectly kept and beautiful and the amenities are just right. I highly recommend making reservations at the a la carte restaurants upon arriving. The buffets are good but will take a day to get used to if you've never been there. i.e. finding the best items and getting over your fear of getting ''la tourista''. The premium level option is totally worth it in my opinion. We would use the airport transfer offered by the resort again as they were prompt, polite and gave us lots of useful information about the area. This is a massive place and Barcelo' does a great job managing it, in my opinion. Any worries I had after reading the reviews here disappeared after wasting the day under beautiful palm trees on an azure Caribbean Sea while trying to decide whether to get another drink or go into the pool.... Enjoy.
