    “Great Snorkeling off the Beach”

We stayed in a basic room, which would have been great had it included WiFi. We were not told that WiFi would be at an extra charge. The staff is well trained and works hard at pleasing the guests. The Barcelo does a great job promoting Mexican culture and heritage with daily events at the Mall. Food was international cuisine, as to be expected. We found healthy food choices, fresh fruit and salads. They had a Mexican food luncheon, which we missed because we ate at a different place that day, on the beach. Great beach and good snorkeling by the dock and away from crowds. Would have been great to have a quiet beach without piped-in music. If the resort didn't pipe it in, people brought their own and played it on speakers; very inconsiderate. We really enjoyed our stay, found it very relaxing and would visit again.

    “Best place”

We go there every year. The wait staff is excellent. Every time I have been there they remember me. Irene is one of the wait staff and is incredible. Talk about attentive. We can't wait to see her every year. The resort is clean and the rooms are nice. The steak restaurant is excellent. I also love Armando at the buffet. He remembered what I ordered everyday. I will continue to go to this resort.

    “Had a great stay”

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Maya Beach - part of a huge 5 hotel complex with many pools, 2 beaches, water park, dive centre, restaurants and bars. We upgraded our stay and had ocean facing room with hot tub on balcony - was great but we didn't use it more than twice. Nice to have more space though and to be close to the pools etc so we didn't have to walk very far to the pools. A few comments - the kids club was focused far too young for our 9 and 11 year old kids. Was supposed to cater to up to age 12 but we found it was mostly for little kids up to about age 7. The dive centre was very helpful - we booked a trip to swim with Whale sharks (amazing! Boat trip out was rough - bring dramamine), also a trip to Cozumel to snorkel there. Also tried the scuba in the pool at the hotel a couple of times which was fun. Didn't go to "swim with dolphins" area as i can't stand to see a 'dolphin prison' at a resort. Go see them in the wild! Not in a hotel pool! Restaurants mostly good; we loved the hibachi, the mexican and the two italian places the best.

    “Disappointing”

If you are looking for a five star resort, this is not it. Especially if you have experience at other all inclusive resorts. As an employee of a major US airline, I frequent Mexico every couple of months and I can definitely say - we won't return here. I was very disappointed with the lack of service, amenities, and accommodations. Our stay had a rough start, as we were directed to wait in line in the the extremely humid lobby for check in. I was surprised that we were made to do this - as, we had purchased a premium level room and that typically means a private air conditioned check in. After waiting in line for nearly 20 minutes, we were called up to only be old there was a problem with our reservation but no one would tell us what the problem was. After another 20 minutes of waiting and asking to see our confirmation several times - we were finally escorted to the premium level check in. We were told that they would tell us what the problem was. Of course, we waited another 20 minutes to be assisted there. Finally, when we got assistance - they said there was no problem and gave us our keys. I am still a little surprised that they didn't show us to our room and we were just left to find it on our own. Even worse, we had to go back to give the room information to the bellboy. It was extremely unorganized and never once, were we made to feel welcome. That was a definite first for me - in all of my resort experience the staff normally go out to their way to be kind and welcoming. After a 1.5 check in process, we found our way to our room. I chose this part of the resort for the ocean front view and because it said the rooms had been renovated. They were decent - at best. In the US, they would certainly fall in the 2.5-3 star range. The patio was large but the jets on our jacuzzi did not work and the walls between patios are paper thin. In fact, the walls in the rooms are paper thin. We were often woken up all hours of the night by the guests in the room next to us and spent little time on the patio as the people next to us were constantly out there talking on the phone. The view is hardly an ocean front. You can barely see the ocean front with the trees and the resort in between. Thanks to prior reviews, I knew we definitely needed to book our dinner reservations right away. We called down to do so and were told we must visit our building concierge. At this point it was almost 3 pm. We decided to walk over to the spa first to make an appointment then circle back. When we finally got back, we went to make our dinner reservations - only to find out then that day of reservations must be made before 3 PM. Thus, forcing us to the icky buffet for dinner that night. Had we be given the proper guidance and instruction at check in, we certainly would have made our reservations right away. I've never been a fan of resort restaurants and this was the one thing Barcelo did well at. We ate at the Mexico Lindo and the Brazilian restaurants on the two nights were able make reservations for. Both restaurants had excellent food and by far, the absolute best service we received the entire trip. However, breakfast and lunch was beyond poor with terrible quality at the buffets and the pool grills. Like most resorts, there was a dress code for dinner...but only for the men. I was flabbergasted when my male friend was asked to unroll his dress pants (rolled slightly up his calf) before we were allowed to enter the restaurant. However, a female walked right in behind is in daisy duke cut off jean shorts. Talk about a terrible double standard and a horrible policy. Mind you, this is after we were chastised by the hostess for being 20 minutes late for our reservation. I apologized and explained that on the bus ride over, we were stopped at length trying to accommodate a wheelchair passenger. What was even more appalling was the 20 plus open tables in the restaurant. It is clear that they want you at the buffets. The main pool was decent but there were many unattended adolescents with no supervision. The adult pool is set so far back into the gardens that it seemed to attract far more bugs and insects. The beach is the best thing that Barcelo has going for them but it is lacking in service, no surprise there. There are no cabanas and no waitstaff. If you want a drink, you have to haul back to the pool bar to get it. Also, it took us quite some time to stumble upon where to get beach towels. We were never able to find anyone to ask, staffing severely lacks here. We did enjoy the Spa and took full advantage of our one hour free hydrotherapy treatment. We would absolutely recommend that. I often recommend resorts to my travel industry peers but this won't be one of them. The couple positives of the resort are far outweighed by the negatives.

    “Third time at this resort”

I would come back to Barcelo in a heartbeat. I was there the week of August 13th. It was VERY hot. We stayed at the Caribe and upgraded to premium. This gives you basically everything you'd get at The Palace on a better part of the beach. In the past the main buffet was not enclosed/air conditioned but it is now. As everyone says the dinners in the fancier restaurants are better. It is easier to get reservations with premium as there is a separate area for making them and you can get them for 6 nights. The buffet is more than adequate for breakfast and lunch. Elaborate and beautiful displays; they must take hours to prepare. Beach and pool areas are very clean and beach was not crowded. I once again had a great experience and will return. Go and enjoy!
