    “Amazing”

My partner & I just come back here from a 2 week stayed & loved it! The Barcelo Maya Grand Resort consists of 5 hotels, four in which you have access to- Beach, Caribe, Colonial & Tropical (Palace you cannot) We were originally placed in the Beach but reading reviews & looking at the hotel I asked to be moved to the Colonial which is more in the centre which they did. Check in- Was easy, quick & was welcomed with a map & welcome drink Room- We were situated on the ground floor of the “Jalisco” which we felt was perfect access to the Mall, Restaurants, Theatre etc. Rooms are a good size with a mini bar which is re stocked daily, air con, no issues with rooms. Pool- There are four pools all with swim up bars, we found the tropical & colonial pools the best. They are the biggest with a lot of stuff going on in the tropical including games & water aerobics music etc. We never struggled to get a sunbed, occassionally would get up late go for breakfast & stroll down at 10:30 & easily get a lounger. (THERE ARE NO PARASOLS) pool always clean. Food- Oh my the food is amaZing! We booked all our A La Cartes straight away when we checked in, I would advise you to do the same do not leave it so you can get a good time. The Spanish ( La Fuente ) is amazing we went twice. There are also four buffets which we had a few times for dinner and is always plenty of options you can’t complain!! Entertainment- We found the entertainment very good, people I have seen have moaned about it but I dont understand what you are expecting its not broadway? They all put on a fab show & different each night amazing singers and dancers! There is a bowling alley/arcade & sports bar which serves food & open 24/7. Location- this hotel is in Riveria Maya & obviously you can’t go wondering the streets here but there is plenty to do, we stayed 2 weeks and didn’t get bored once! The reps provide plenty of activites to do outside the hotel which are very good but very expensive, you will be looking at 120 dollars roughly per person. Water Sports- There is kayaking, bike pedalo & snorkelling you can do for free and other paid activites such as banana boat, jet skies, parasailiing diving etc available. There is also by the Maya Mall a surf ride/flow board activity you can do for 20 dollars. Negatives- We do not really have any except the wifi! You can only use between 10-1 in the Maya Mall so if your staying in the beach it can be annoying to walk everyday! On one of the days we experienced severe rain which caused ALL of the ground floor in the Jalisco to be flooded inside the rooms!!! But the staff did everything they could to clean the mess up for everybody so we cannot fault them for this. Overall this hotel is huge, lots to do you will not get bored and plenty of activites to do outside the hotel. Food is amazing & visiting April bar the one rain day it was over 30 degree heat everyday!! X

    “Terrific Resort for Couples”

My wife and I spent ten days at Barcelo Maya Beach Resort from March 21-31, 2018. It was a wonderful stay. Here are the positives: - resort is beautiful, huge, well kept, well maintained, and incredibly well spaced (wide sidewalks, long beach walkway, nice loop and great spacing of green space between buildings) - restaurants were terrific. Both Japanese restaurants are well worth going to as participants at the grill tables or at the restaurant tables. Spanish restaurant was great. Mexican restaurant was wonderful and had super service. Italian restaurant was exquisite with their chicken Alfredo. - the resort has a lot of things to do. We loved the sports bar and March madness was great fun in the theatre. We loved the mini golf. We loved the pickle ball courts (they call them paddle ball and the lines aren’t the same but the courts worked well for us to practice and play). We loved the lap pools. We loved the mall and the Mexican Market. We enjoyed the deck chairs and never had any trouble finding space at pools or at the beach. The bars were great and the lunch grills were enjoyable. The sailing centre was amazing. Cesar, Salvador, Gabby, and others were so helpful and patient. The sailing was really fun. The windsurfing was terrific and the snorkeling with the turtles was so great. - we loved the evening shows. The dance troupe and the costumes were fantastic. - the buffets were great. The tropical buffet was the best one and the custom omelettes were the most wonderful breakfasts with fruit. So good. - the 2km beach was extraordinary. The Negatives: - we asked for a king sized bed months previous to our trip and although we requested politely every day, we never did get a room switch. That was unfortunate but certainly not a large negative. - the dolphins are interesting to watch but the implications of caging such beautiful and intelligent creatures in such small pools, so closely to the open ocean, does make you feel badly for them. - the beach resort seems tired. An upgrade would be timely on these rooms. The colonial and the tropical seemed better from what we could see. Finally... Overall, this is the only resort we are tempted to go back to again because we had such a wonderful time. The size for us was a great feature because we walked at least 20,000 steps a day and it is a beautiful and safe place to walk day or night. I would be tempted to book a premium room next time to get a nicer room and closer to the beaches. We loved it.

    “great week”

we stayed for a week at the Barcelo Beach, this resort is in a group of 4 other hotels, you can use the amenities at all but the palace. we had a great room, clean cool and spacious. we ate at the buffett, the santa fe (steakhouse) trattoria (italian) and the mexican at maya mall and the tappinaki . all were good to very good, service everywhere was excellent. the resort(s) are well manicured and attended to. pools were clean and cool, there are plenty of chairs at every pool and beach location, you will always get a chair/lounger. service at swim ups at the poolside buffets were great. there is plenty of food choice at the buffett and the al a carts i could not find anything that did not meet or exceed my expectations. the maya mall is part of the maya beach resort but available to all. some stores a couple bars restaurant and its all covered. the Strikers bar/pub had food 24/7 had tvs for sports and have a few lanes for bowling. great for the kids.

    “Thoroughly disappointed.”

I stayed in room 1109 in the Tulum building and I only wish I could give a positive review for this resort, but aside from the weather and the atmosphere, that’s where it ends. The service was sub par at best dealing with the concierge there. And right off the start I have to just say I would NEVER recommend this resort in a million years. We went with a large group for a wedding and most had similar things to say, though nobody had the bad luck we were graced with while staying there. We had arrived at 11:30 but our rooms wouldn’t be ready until 3. That was fine, it gave us some time to look around the property. We went back at 3:00 with the rest of the group and everyone happily got their keys to their rooms. Except us. Our room wouldn’t be ready for another hour. At this point we just wanted to settle in as we had supper plans we needed to get ready for (a full day of flying prior to) Cut to 4:15 and our junior ocean view suite was ready to go. Initially, we had requested nothing ground level. Reason number one why we wanted this was proven right away the first night. The volume of people walking by was atrocious! Bound to happen, but there was a reason I requested anywhere but ground level. “Ocean view” is loosely worded at the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort obviously as we were staring at a wall of trees. Which I can only assume the ocean was behind? The toilet seat should have been replaced and looked very gross coming into what’s supposed to be a beautiful room. It must have been painted at least 6 times. Totally dirty looking. Air conditioning in this room DID NOT WORK. It made noise, but that’s it. Our room never went lower than 25 degrees Celsius... it was agony to sleep in at night. The cleaning of the room before we had gotten in there was debatable. No snacks or drinks had been replenished, the air vent in the shower had fallen out of the ceiling and was thrown underneath by the hair dryer, and after running the water in the shower it was easy to tell where the water was coming from on the floor earlier that day, which was a serious safety hazard as soon as we walked in, both myself and my husband had to catch our footing when we rolled in with our bags there was so much water on the floor. Later, when I made mention of it, the ladies working there tried to tell me it was from the air conditioner. Oh, the air conditioner that isn’t running? Perfect. The next morning, a cleaning lady barged into our room without even knocking. Then nonchalantly asked if we needed more towels. We left the do not disturb sign on the door the rest of the time we were in there unless we were due for more towels or snacks/drinks. They wouldn’t be knocking it seemed. After a full day and a second night of being told “tomorrow” I had finally had enough of this “premium” service myself and my husband were receiving and went to the premium lounge where I requested another room immediately and ran down the list of why this room needed serious maintenance. She just looked at me blankly and smiled “okee” Then I was rudely told “you don’t come down here to ask us about a room anymore, call these numbers if you want to check on a room” and was given a scrap piece of paper with 2 extension numbers. We spent our third night on a new room in the Coba building which was MUCH better. If we had of had this room in the beginning I would probably have given a 8/10, but the initial room and how we were handled left a very sour taste in my mouth, overall experience would be a 4/10. Speaking of sour tastes..... The buffet was a solid 3/10. The 3 is solely for the bacon and churros in the morning. The food was only eaten to keep us alive, definitely not because it was good. And the rumour is true; expect stomach cramps and long washroom visits after eating most of it. One particular evening, my husband was enjoying some potatoes and roast beef and gravy....... until he found a public hair in it. Thankfully he found it on his plate and not in his mouth. The best thing on their menu was demoted quickly thanks to that. We filled up on breakfast items in the morning and ordered BLT sandwiches from room service for pretty much the remainder of our trip, aside from 2 a la carte restaurants we went to. The Santa Fe Steakhouse and the Italian restaurant next door to it were delicious, I would recommend these if you do happen to go to the resort and take a chance with the rest of the service we received. The drinks were ok. Not much booze or too much, there was no in between. I’m not a big drinker but hardly did I feel drunk; which, being on vacation without my kids, I kind of wanted to!! On our first night in our new air conditioned room on the second floor, the morning of a very busy day (the wedding) in which we were hoping to sleep in, we were awoken by a lovely 5:15am wakeup call we did not request. Since the phone ringer is set on panic, we did not get back to sleep at all. Again, complete disorganization by concierge. Probably the people who had left the day prior’s wakeup call. On our second last day we hit up some shops and got a few souvenirs for our children. When walking upto our room that was cleaned but never stocked up with drinks or snacks besides one day (to note: in our first room nothing was replenished— in our second room we realized all of the things we were missing from our first suite, so at this point I don’t believe the first room was even cleaned in comparison.) So we went to drop off our bags to our room and try to find some lunch. Neither of our keys would work. I had to march back down to the premium lounge where I was told I was checking out today. NO. I was checking out the next day. They had removed our key access to the room!!!! To say I was furious was an understatement at this point. all in all, I couldn’t wait to get out of there the next morning. I have been on all inclusive before and this was anything but relaxing and enjoyable. I would never recommend this resort to any of my friends. EVER.
