Barceló Maya Beach reviewed by aleks_van on . Very nice resort that has everything for vacation at the beach! Barcelo resorts are about 1 hour drive from Cancun airport, so be prepared for a bit of driving. But that applies to all resorts in the area (Mayan Riviera). Check-in was fast and pleasant, although... Rating: 5

    “ONE OF THE BEST RESORTS”

I was there in October 2016 (two couples). There were misunderstanding during the check-in process, however, Denys Khronenko, resort representative, helped us with no stress and we got two rooms close to each other. I like resort’s big property. The beach at the front of Barcelo Maya Beach rooms is much better. Wish to have more entertainment at night. Otherwise, highly recommended.

“Great beach and service with ok food”

I don't normally stay at all-inclusives and haven't stayed at one in a while and this one hasn't changed my mind about them. First let me say the staff and the grounds were excellent. Everyone was very nice. Servers were friendly and attentive. I made sure to leave a few more pesos for excellent service. The grounds were clean. Beautiful gardens and beaches. The buffets and a la carte restaurants were well maintained. Even staying at Maya Beach, which I assume is the older section, things were in pretty good condition. Our room was nice. We had a good size flat screen tv. The room was laid out nicely. We had a comfortable king size bed. I would say it was med-firm. My husband likes a super soft bed and he didn't have any problems sleeping on it. Our room overlooked beautiful lush gardens. It was very clean, and they kept the mini bar stocked. The room wasn't super fancy, but it was just right and fit in with the theme of the hotel. The gym was great. It was nice to be able to take a yoga class. They also offered spin, zumba, pilates, along with well maintained and modern treadmills, and stationary bikes, as well as free weights and weight machines. If you must have a proper gym during your vacation, then this place has it. There are two distinct beaches on property and that was really our deciding factor in choosing this resort. Maya beach/caribe side has a very calm, smooth beach with some fish. Great for relaxing and cooling off. Maya tropical/colonial side has a rocky beach, but a lot more fish. Great for snorkeling and not having to pay a company or take a cab/ferry anywhere. I talked to someone who saw turtles early one morning, but I, unfortunately didn't see any. This side has a few (very few) more waves, but really not rough at all. Water shoes may be advisable for easier walking in the water. Both sides are sort of shallow. I'm 5' 7" and could go out a ways and still touch the bottom. It stays waist deep for a bit. The beach had plenty of loungers. No umbrellas, but plenty of palm trees for shade. And that sand, that flour soft sand that seems to never get hot. It was pretty perfect. They have staff constantly patrolling the beach looking for trash or empty glasses, so it stays pretty clean. Pools were really good to. I didn't use them much, but plenty of lounge chairs, lots of hammocks. Maybe I missed it, but where were the hot tubs? There were bubbles in the pool, but not at all heated. I was looking for somewhere to soak after a long day of travel, and not a single one at either pool. So why am I still not an AI person? I gotta say that the food wasn't that spectacular. All inclusive gets you buffet. If you love buffet then you'll probably love it. There was a lot of variety, but wished they had more flavor, spice or something. Breakfast was good in the beach bar/grills. In fact they were better than the buffet. A la carte restaurants were ok. However this is my biggest complaint: how is there only 1 Mexican restaurant in a resort in Mexico? I don't understand. Meanwhile there's 2 Italian, 2 Japanese (hibachi), 1 steakhouse and a Spanish restaurant. The Mexican restaurant was ok. It needed more of that Mexican flavor and spice. We're in Mexico, I expect it, and it fell short. I'm from Colorado and we have good Mexican food here, so this was a bit disappointing. Maybe with a heads up you can ask your server for more spice. I want it to taste like grandma made it. It doesn't have to be fancy. The best places on the resort to eat were the snack bars on the beach, and the sports bar. Actually the Sports bar was our favorite. they play all the major sporting events throughout the world. The bartenders there were the best. They make great cocktails and coffee drinks. Also the lobby bar had decent drinks too. Maya Beach lobby bar is tucked away, and we didn't find it until the second to last day of our trip. This place is quiet at night. They do a variety of shows at 9:30 that are decent. Some are definitely better than others, but for the most part pretty good. It really depends on your tastes as well. Some of the shows are very family friendly You can tell the performers put a great deal of work into it. There's also a small night club on site. It's no Coco Bongo, but if you like to shake it to some reggaeton, then you don't have to travel far. A side from the food I think this place is a good place to stay depending on what you're looking for in a vacation. If you don't like leaving the resort it has pretty much every thing you would need. On the other hand if you like being able to walk to places outside the resort and experience Mexican life then you're a bit too far. TLDR: nice hotel, minus 2 points for food and distance from town, plus 1 point for excellent staff and amenities.

    “The best service”

My buddy and I stayed here a few weeks ago and it was a wonderful experience. The people at the front desk were very helpful and friendly. Very nice beach and the food was pretty good. The best part of our trip was the attentive service from our dinner waiter at the main restaurant. His name is Candelario Cuxim. This guy was just a peach. I am so glad he was our waiter! He just went out of his way to make us feel like we were home. If you get to go for here ask for Candy he will treat you well.

“No sleep, no umbrellas, bad food”

I am at this hotel now and my experience has been awful. Most of the rooms are adjoining so you have no quiet at night and in the morning because it sounds as if the people in the next room are in the room with you, hence no sleep. After 2 nights of no sleep, they finally switched my room. Also if you need shade on the beach, forget it. They have no umbrellas on the beach, there are some trees, but they don't give enough cover and you have to move your chair every 10 minutes when the sun moves. Also the food at the buffets is pretty awful. The food at the Japanese restaurant is good but you have to book a reservation there as soon as you arrive or it will get booked up. The beach is pretty but it is packed to the gills even in low season. Also the resort is so big it is a really long walk to get to anything.

“Nice resort - very big - wouldn't recommend for wedding - very clean”

This is one of several locations together which makes it a huge resort. It's a beautiful site for a wedding but just too big! Guests were in six different buildings. Not the setting we all hoped for. Lots of language barriers in the salon and front desk. People who attended just for the day had to pay more than quoted. It rains nearly every day yet the hotel didn't have umbrellas - not even for the wedding party to use. I've been to other weddings at other resorts and they just seemed like a higher caliber. The wedding planner was nice - but things like umbrellas are a management decision. They fell short and I would not recommend for a wedding. I had my hair done in the salon -- as did others. Language was such a barrier for me. They put my hair up and I didn't want it up. One of the family and I nearly missed the wedding. Th salon knew the time constraints. Not a good deal at all. Massage was amazing! But more expensive than in DC! Beautiful, impeccable rooms. So clean!! Grounds were amazing. Entertainment was okay. A lot of hard working staff. They pushed alcohol even at breakfast - even when we said no. The wait staff otherwise was attentive. Food was okay. Very difficult Frank me as I have allergies and had no idea about oils used etc -- and finding English speaking staff was hard. They charge for wifi. Breakfast opens later so when going on a tour - we went without breakfast. I don't need a mall or six resorts attached and the ability to go see them. The pools and ocean were amazing. If I hadn't been there for a wedding where the language barriers and schedules and size of venue caused issues - this would be a better review. I would not recomment this venue for a wedding.
