“Very nice resort with the potential to be great”

Just got back from a 6 day stay in Feb, 2017. we read a lot of reviews (the good, the bad and the ugly) before the trip so we had more realistic expectations before getting there. We booked at Caribe but we sent to Beach. Again we knew this could happen based on reading reviews. Beach side turned out to be better as the pool is much quieter than Caribe. The pros: Overall we had a great time. The resort is beautiful. The beach is very nice. We saw lots of fish at the dock and Palace beach. We even saw turtles there. The resort is also conveniently located with short rides to Xcaret, Xel-ha, Tulum. There are 2 cenote parks right across highway from the resort. We ran across the highway one day and visited kantun Chi. Highly recommended the underground river tour there. We had club premium Junior Suites which were worth the extra money because of the room location and ala carte options. The room is right next to the pool and you could see the beach from the patio. Really enjoyed sitting in the hot tub on the patio and looking at the palm trees and the ocean at the end of the day. The maid service was excellent (we also left a tip everyday of our stay :). Our room was spotless with plenty of towels. The mini fridge was refilled everyday as well. We also ordered room service for breakfast which was very nicely prepared. We were able to dine at ala carte 5 nights (Mexican, Tokyo, Kyoto, Seafood, Trattoria) and had buffet the 6th night. The services, drinks and food are definitely better at ala carte. Our waiter Issac Vazquez at Mexico Lindo was very warm, friendly and efficient. He even made delicious mayan coffee for us which was quite a show itself. We had a couple's massage at the spa which was very nice. Edith was great. The Spa itself is beautiful. Miniature golf was free for club premium - beautiful landscaped and a nice break from the beach and pool. The double deck bus rans frequently and a nice option to use at night after a late dinner. Things can be improved: Buffet food is just OK but enough variety so you can always find something to eat. Would be nice to have some freshly prepared authentic Mexican food. Drinks are overall below average at the pools and bars throughout the resorts. All tasted watered down with too much syrup in them. We were never given any premium level drinks even though there is a premium section at each bar. I felt the bar tenders should automatically do that without being asked. Most staff are hard working and courteous but not overly warm and friendly, especially the checkin area, the buffet staff and bar tenders, They seems somewhat indifferent even when tipped. Maybe they felt overworked but under appreciated? Most of the staff have limited English as well. In summary, this is a great place for family with children if you are not too picky about foods and drinks. We travelled with a child and had sushi/sashimi without getting sick. No mosquitos either. You can get bottled water at every restaurant and bar so you don't have the carry them from your room. Tons of activities, nice location to get to other area attractions, beautiful setting and common areas, great beach and pool. I would however look somewhere else if your are looking for a romantic getaway as a couple. The place is a little overcrowded with lots of young kids.

    “Great service!!!!!”

The bufet at Maya beach is wonderful. Amazing selection and they keep it t interesting. The weightier Antonio Valesquez made sure that my family got the best service and enjoyed a wonderful diner!!! The manager at the bufet is excellent as well. The kids club is outstanding. My kids loved going there and they are not the type to be OK with being left alone even with my best friend.Every day they got to do more that I could have planed for theme even for their birthday party. They kept saying that they had the best day ever!!!!

    “AN EXCELLENT ALL-INCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE”

My wife and I joined another couple for a week at the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort. It is actually one of five contiguous hotels that make up a very large resort. The experience was better than expected, as the entire place is very well run. The food choices are ample and the food is very good (not necessarily for foodies, but top of the line all-inclusive); drinks were ample and readily available; there were more than enough chairs and lounges by the pools (hammocks, too) and on the lovely beach. The rooms are nicely appointed. We were in the all-inclusive section, which included all the buffets and about ten possible specialty restaurants (we got to go to 4 with our package). There are also a number of "premium" sections, with better amenities and access to a few restaurants that we would have had to pay for. There are hundreds of things to do, or you can do nothing. They do have concerts from time to time (the Grateful Dead played on our first night), and the theater shows run late and are loud - so noise can be a factor. I found that closing the sliding doors and ear plugs did the trick. Wifi is availabe for a fee (free with premium), or you can go to the property mall (yes, a mall), where wifi is free from 10:00 am to 1:0 pm. It was good to disconnect for most of the trip. My wife bought a package (usable anywhere) because she had some work to do (poor planning on her part). The staff is well-trained, excellent actually. There are hundreds of them, and they all do their jobs very well. A good idea is to carry some cash to give tips, because you will never find everyone on the day you are leaving. They offer tour desks to explore the surrounding area and have a spa and fitness center on the property. This is the best all-inclusive I have ever been to, and we will very likely return to this or other Barcelo properties.

“Wonderful stay with plenty of activities”

Stayed at the Barcelo Maya Beach resort for 10 days in November 2016 with family. Check-in was fast and efficient. We were met with a cold drinks, always a plus. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and well maintained with small wildlife sharing the space with you (mostly Iguanas). The Maya Beach resort, I was told is the oldest of the 5 hotels within this Barcelo compound, however if it is, it is very well maintained. Our room was very modern and more importantly felt and smelled clean. There were no lingering musty odours at any time during our stay and the cleaners did an excellent job. The beach: The best stretch of beach, within this compound, is in front of this hotel. Beautiful, turquoise water and soft sand. Lots of available water activities. The hammocks are by the pool, not at the beach , which is a shame since I really enjoyed using them instead of the lounge chairs. Food: I enjoyed the buffet meals overall. Particularly those home made doughnuts, which I know I ate too many of. There was always enough food variety to ensure that everyone could find something they could enjoy. Only complaint we had is that the food warmers did not consistently keep the the food hot enough. If you arrive when a new tray of food is first placed on the warmer it is very hot, if you come in later many of the food is cold. For that reason we ordered at the grill where you could pick your fish or meat and it would be prepared on request. And for those of you who are curious we tried the buffet at the other resorts available to us (so I am excluding the Palace ), for both breakfast and dinner. Other than the design of the dining rooms, there was not much of a difference and the theme nights were rotated from one resort to another. My favourite a la carte restaurant was the Japanese, good food and a good atmosphere. Kids: Children would love this resort. There is a man-made surf pool, children's pool with buckets of water that overflow and tip over. There is a kiddie spa. Other Stuff: There are double - decker buses that transport guests between the various resorts, to the mall, the dolphinarium, the gym and spa. You can take safari rides on the resort. By the way, the gym here is one of the best I have seen at the resorts I have been to. Things I did not like (and this is where my review gets political) : 1) I love Mexico and its people, so I always find the time to get away from the resort and see some of this beautiful country. On this trip I finally made the trip to chichen itza. However, the goal of this resort is obviously to confine all your spending to this resort, which means your dollars never leave the resort, which is not locally owned. 2) I go to the spa regularly in Toronto, the prices at this resort for the 50 minute massages is what I could get a 80 minute massage for at one of Toronto's better spas (after converting to Canadian dollars). I would happily pay the fee if I believed that the esthetician in Mexico was being paid the same as the esthetician in Toronto. 3) The Dolphins: I am conflicted. I can see the joy on the children's faces when they get to swim with the dolphins and I admit this is the first time I have seen them up close. But they are smart beautiful mammals, in a space that appears too small for animals used to swimming many kilometers per day. Set them free!!!! Not holding a grudge though, still a great place to kick back, relax and have fun.

Dear Ms GirlOnTheGoToronto Thank you very much for sharing this great review of your recent stay at Barceló Maya Beach. We are thrilled that you have enjoyed your stay. The entire team works very hard to ensure that we deliver a high standard of service and a warm, memorable experience.  All trays of our buffets are being constantly checked by our kitchen staff to ensure that the temperature of the food is adequate and that all options are being replenished throughout all services, nevertheless please rest assured that your comments will be shared with the team so as to avoid receiving this kind of feedback in the future. Please rest assured we have taken good note of your remarks related to the extras in our spa and mall and sincerely regret your dissatisfaction, mostly beacuse we always strive to give the best value to our guests studying the prices in accordance with hotels of the same category in our area. Again we thank you for this very kind review of our hotel and we look forward to serving you again in the future.
