“Great Fun at the Barcelo Maya Beach!”

We recently returned from a week-long stay at the Barcelo Maya Beach. We were a group of 10 (5 couples). Everyone was extremely pleased with the experience and all agreed this was the best All-Inclusive they've stayed at to date. The pools were enormous and fun. You have access to all the pools, we stayed at the "party" pool (Maya Caribe). The beach at the Maya Beach was the best. The was smooth and tranquil. There was very little seaweed. There was always abundant seating. We played beach volleyball every day. For a needed break from the "party" pool, I found "El Cielo" pool, which lived up to its name as a slice of "heaven". It was quiet and provided in pool loungers for reading. I could've spent all day in that pool, had I not been swept up in the fun at the Caribe pool. The food was very good. We dined at Tokyo (Hibachi), the Italian place (in the Maya Mall), Santa Fe (Steak House) and La Fuente (Spanish Cuisine). The a la Carte restaurants were pretty good. We liked Santa Fe and the Italian the best. The buffet always had a wide variety of choices. On our last night, they served lobster and it was many in our group's favorite meal. We ate lunch at Captain Morgan's every day. It is located at the Maya Caribe pool (which we found to be the most lively). The basic superior room in the Koba building was more than adequate. It was cool (although it could have been a touch cooler) and clean. Housekeeping did a great job every day refreshing the mini bar and cleaning the room. They also have upgraded rooms if you really want to experience luxury. We just didn't spend enough time in our room to justify the expense. We went with Apple tours and the entire trip, including direct roundtrip airfare, insurance and accommodations for 2 was $2000. You can barely fly to most places for that price, which is why I was surprised at the caliber and luxury of the resort. Which is not to say that the food and rooms are on par with the Ritz, but, for me, they were more than enough. I don't think it is reasonable to expect Michelin star food at an All-Inclusive. Nonetheless, I enjoyed all of my dining experiences. At the Barcelo Maya Beach, the staff goes out of their way to help you in every way. They are kind and remember you by name. The ladies in the guest services office were particularly kind. They helped our big group get dinner reservations as well as wifi. Usually that is quite a task, but they made it the process quick and easy. They also arranged an anniversary surprise for my husband and me--a cake and champagne! It was a very nice touch! Due to reports of tainted alcohol, we all either brought alcohol from the states or purchased some at duty free. Suffice it to say, we didn't open any of those bottles. I felt safe and at ease the entire time. As far as reports of an increase in crime in the area, I must mention that I felt safer there than going to a regular shopping center in my hometown in the US. I would not hesitate to return with my children. One of my smaller concerns was that the house wine would not be good. I did bring some from home, but again, I didn't drink it. I spent around $20 for a nice bottle of wine at a few times at the a la carte restaurants (they usually gave a 25% discount). Again, for the price of the hotel, spending a little more on wine did not seem unreasonable to me. We went on three excursions: Xel Ha, Tulum Ruins and Dolphin Discovery booked through our Apple Rep at Barcelo. The transport to the excursions picked us up at the hotel and was punctual and professional. Other than the Reps, there were little sales pitches throughout. We were never offered a time share, and there were very few peddlers on the beach, and the ones that were there were not pushy at all. The only negatives we experienced were: --One of our travel companions left their Yeti tumbler on the table at Captain Morgan's at lunch. Upon realizing it a couple hours later, the cup was already gone. We sent my husband, a native Spanish speaker, to see if any one could find it and no one could. We had to file a report with security, but the cup was never found. Later in the week, when my husband was walking with his Yeti tumbler, an employee asked him how much they cost in the US. I suppose this is a lesson learned to us. While my companion easily replaced her Yeti upon returning home, we are sure to remember that $30 is no small amount of money for an employee there. The lobby gift shop sells cheap "Bubba" tumblers for $40, so I wonder what a Yeti can go for... We also cannot be sure that another guest did not take the tumbler, and all in all, it was a minor blip in an other wonderful experience. Activities: One day we tried the free aqua sports they were only providing kayaks. They said the paddle boards and tricycle-floats could not go out due to hazardous conditions. The flag that day was yellow, and many people were swimming in the ocean. Each attendant gave us a different story. One employee said that the reason was because they simply didn't want to get down the equipment. So, I guess that was their way of trying to get us to upgrade to the $70 Jet ski's. The resort also has a bowling alley in the Lucky Strike Bar. We all wanted to eat dinner there and play a game. We noticed that no one else was bowling. It was because they charge $15 per person per game. So for $150 for one game for our group. No thanks. Other than those few minor things, we had an absolutely wonderful time. I would definitely recommend this resort and hope to return in the future.

“very good pools and restaurants. The rooms are very clean.”

The rooms were large and clean. The buffets were very good and had a large selection to choose from which was different every evening. The restaurants offered a good selection from the menu and the service was very good.

    “Had a great week!”

I stayed at this hotel in May of last year (2016) Only let me pick as far back as October 2016. I swear I did a review last year, but guess I forgot too. Or maybe I just did on facebook and forgot to do trip advisor. Well anyways, went to the Barcelo for a friends wedding. Was about 30 of us there, no one seemed to ever have an issue or a complaint. Staff is great. Had a fun week! And my friends wedding was beautiful and the staff was very helpful. This resort is HUGE! They have buses for you to get around which is helpful. It's huge because you stay at one and play at 4. Which was cool, lots of pools to choose from. The disco was fun, and we always ended up at the sports bar because its 24 hours, good food, best sandwiches ever! It smells like feet in there because of the bowling alley, just to warn you. I was a bit disappointed in the beach, is rocky. This also could be because I have been to Cuba and the beaches there are amazing and not comparable to Mexico. I didn't let it ruin my week though, my husband and I and our friends enjoyed the pool and swim up bar. We tried all the el la cartes and I was never disappointed, buffet was good too. The rooms were very nice and clean, maid was great. Only complaint I have is the water slides and other extras like bowling and games cost money. That kind of sucked, and not even for a good price. Other then that it was a good time and a very nice resort.

    “Great Snorkeling off the Beach”

We stayed in a basic room, which would have been great had it included WiFi. We were not told that WiFi would be at an extra charge. The staff is well trained and works hard at pleasing the guests. The Barcelo does a great job promoting Mexican culture and heritage with daily events at the Mall. Food was international cuisine, as to be expected. We found healthy food choices, fresh fruit and salads. They had a Mexican food luncheon, which we missed because we ate at a different place that day, on the beach. Great beach and good snorkeling by the dock and away from crowds. Would have been great to have a quiet beach without piped-in music. If the resort didn't pipe it in, people brought their own and played it on speakers; very inconsiderate. We really enjoyed our stay, found it very relaxing and would visit again.
