    Montelimar's Intriguing History

The area was once the estate of the Somoza family, the dynastic leaders who ruled Nicaragua for 44 years. The Somozas obtained the land after they declared war on Germany during World War II and confiscated the property from its German owners. The two countries never actually fought each other, leading one to imagine that what the Somoza family really wanted was ownership of this beautiful swath of Pacific beachfront. The last Somoza fled the country in 1979, most likely taking off from the private airstrip on this estate. He escaped violent protests against the family's oppressive leadership. Civil strife and some ill-advised intervention by the United States roiled the country after Somoza's departure, but all that has long since been resolved, with fair democratic elections being held since 1990. Peace has allowed the country to focus on building a reputation as a premier travel destination. Montelimar Beach is a prime example of its roaring success. A few reminders of the powerful Somozas remain; their former mansion has become an elegant casino. It's open 24-hours during the weekends.
