    “Thank you, Wellness Centre!”

Myself and my partner had a lovely time at this hotel, and usually, hotels to us are not a priority as we like to go out and explore, but we are so pleased we chose Hotel Barcelo. I am going to write a review in categories just to make it easier to read: TRAVEL- We ended up booking a last minute deal with Thomson who were excellent. They really look after you, give you lots of information and made everything really smooth from arrival to the airport. There is often a welcome meeting where you can chat to a rep and get more info about excursions etc. The only quibble we have was leaving the hotel we got a text letting us know the departure time (which was helpful) however the time it said it would arrive was based upon Portugal time (which is one hour behind Spanish time) so we were waiting around an hour and did not realise the coach wouldn't come directly into the hotel car park. HOTEL- Upon arrival, we were greeted with a glass of champagne each at the hotel which was a nice start to our break. The hotel itself is beautiful and a lot nicer than we anticipated, having looked at the photos. The staff were lovely and very helpful... also super impressed at the many languages that they speak. The hotel itself is huge and to me, was palace-like! The rooms are typical rooms with a balcony, very clean and nice bathroom with double shower. No tea/coffee facilities but this didn't bother us as at breakfast this was available anyway. The wifi is free and we were on level 3 with no issues. Lots of storage for clothes etc. There is also a gate at the end of the hotel that you can access with your key card which leads on to the road and the beach is a couple minutes' walk straight head. If you need a pool towel it is €10 deposit per towel but you actually get your money back which I was surprised with. AMENITIES/FACILITIES- The hotel has one large pool which is an interesting shape, and also a smaller pool near it (which looked like a shallower pool for babies/children). There is a indoor whirlpool and indoor swimming pool both inside called the 'Wellness Centre' which I have to say, saved my partner and I as we burnt ourselves on the first day so spent a lot of time recovering in here! There is also a spa area which do massages etc. FOOD- We were on half-board and glad we chose this option. The food was lovely and often consisted of the same/similar things each night in terms of pasta, fish, salads etc but the 'main' foods e.g meat changed each night and often had different themes. The desserts were also good and there was even a sweet tuck-shop on one of the evenings much to my delight! Not sure I would have gone for the All-Inclusive option as we filled ourselves up on breakfast and then had a midday snack from the on-site snack bar. There are also lots of restaurants around if you wanted to eat off-site. THINGS TO DO- We were unable to do the excursions we wanted, however if you travel through Thomson they offer many different days out/trips for everyone. They often had a Thomson rep around and there was a welcome meeting the morning after arrival to chat about these trips. If you look on their website under 'excursions' you will need to choose the 'Costa De La Luz (Huelva)' option. You can also walk to Ayamonte which is about an hour 15 mins or get a taxi which is 15 min ride for about €10. The beach is a couple of minutes' walk from the hotel and is easily accessible with your keycard through a large gate at the back of the hotel by the pools. You can walk far out into the ocean and still have the water up to your waistline and it is beautifully clear. If you don't travel through Thomson, there are still things to do that we saw advertised like ferry rides etc. TIMING- We only stayed for 4 nights but this was enough time for us due to us not being able to do the excursions etc (from being burnt!) but was a lovely place to relax. We also found that there was a complete mixture of people from families with young children/couples/older people etc and had things to suit everyone. We booked our trip the week before half-term so it wasn't swamped with kids (personally for us, we didn't want this) however due to the space of the complex, it wasn't cramped and was nice to see families having a good time but otherwise not sure what it would be like during half-term. We had a lovely break away, definitely a 4*+ experience :)

“Overall good (but star rating on here only allows very good or average!)”

Lovely quiet location. Incredible beach. Very good all inclusive food. Pretty, well kept hotel grounds. Room a little small. Balcony very small. Some rooms the balcony didn't even look big enough to sit one person on! The negatives Slow service at reception and bars and confusing all inclusive. Long queue for check in and staff not seemingly aware of this. Took far too long to check in. Frustratingly you need to pay a 20 euro deposit for the in room safe. You can only pay cash and they don't have an ATM. You can pay at the end of your stay for the safe by card, but not the deposit?! On all inclusive you can pour for own beer, sangria, soft drinks and hot drinks. But for anything else (including water) you need to queue at the bar. Often 3 or 4 people in a queue. Never more than one member of staff working the bar. Confusing all inclusive. The pool snack bar has an all inclusive buffet. But before 13:30 and after 16:00 you can order all inclusive from a menu, well, as long as you're travelling with Tui from the UK. "ignore the prices, they only apply between 13:30 and 16:00".

“Lots to love but think carefully about all inclusive”

As many have said this is a great hotel - fabulous location, big pool, enthusiastic and friendly staff and entertainment (I've never seen so many people want to join in aqua fit and laugh at the same time!), good food, comfortable rooms, easy wifi. The only thing that stops it from being a 5 star for us was that all inclusive is largely restricted to the indoor (noisy) buffet restaurant for all 3 meals and 1 cocktail of the day. Soft drinks & beer are on a help yourself basis, but if you want to have anything other than the help yourself snacks by the pool at lunchtime, or go to the outdoor evening BBQ, then you have to pay 50%. Having said that we had a wonderful week, and would recommend Barcelo Isla canela as well as the gorgeous old town of Ayamonte ( a short bus ride away)

Nothing to regret. Everithing perfect. Just a litle point: WI-FI. If there were no wi-fi, I wouldn't had nothing to say - as there are wi-fi, i must regret the ignorance of a woman in the reception, and no attention to my question about a problem with it - she didn't care about me, and that could be a problem, if i decided to push a lit bit - but i was in vacations and i decided not to be conserned about that). Excelent.

    “Excellent overall”

Loved the resort, quite quiet with fabulous beach. The hotel has been recently refurbished and is very good, with really nice grounds. Rooms are a decent size with comfy beds and well fitted bathroom ( would have liked a bit of shelf space). Pool, area is well kept with plenty of sun beds and enoug shade? Pool itself was disappointingly cold for July but scrupulously clean and well kept. Animation team led enough activities but we're not intrusive. Restaurant got very busy but the food was some of the best we have ever had in this style of hotel, plenty of choice and with good temperature control. Staff were friendly and efficient if somewhat pushed to cope at times. Reception staff were efficient and friendly. Strangely there was no facility to exchange money and this, combined wit a total absence of banks or cash machines in resort could leave you in difficulty. However the local bus stop is outside and Ayononte, the nearest proper town, has plenty of both, so provided you have a couple of euros for the bus you are O.K. Entertainment was pretty good overall ( the African night was very weak) and the entertainment lounge was well furnished and comfy with good bar service. Staff at the pool bar/restaurant were very efficient and remembered our preferences, which was pretty impressive for somewhere so busy. The all inclusive offering was decent value once you got your head around the system - a bit confusing to start with. It was a pity that the seating in the pool bar was so uncomfortable as it took, the enjoyment off the venue to a large extent. Overall, we had a really good week and would recommend and return.
