    “Lovely Holiday in September”

My partner and myself spent 11 nights at the hotel at the beginning of September. We stayed here last year and once again we couldn't fault the room (although this year we were in a room on the 9th floor). The restaurant and pool bar were excellent and the reception and restaurant staff were all polite (the young lady on reception was especially helpful). There was no trouble getting a sunbed and we preferred the quiet area away from the pools. We had a second trip to La Gomera which we once again very much enjoyed.

    “September stay 4th visit”

The hotel is in a lovely location - beds are comfy - rooms are tired. Air con not powerful enough to cope with temperatures over 30º C Food choice in the breakfast buffet good - but too many people all milling around trying to get it - doesn't make for a pleasant experience. Cereals are really cheap and poor at breakfast, I even bought my own Greek yoghurt to take into breakfast- as i can only eat the natural yoghurt with no sugar or additives in it. The evening meal has lots of choice - but we feel that the amount of fish and choices has deteriorated since the Barceló merger with Occidental same can be said of the salad bar. For our entire stay the 12th - 19th September 2017 - there was no air con on in the restaurant in the evening until our very last night. Unfortunately, this made it unbearable to sit comfortably and eat your evening meal. It almost felt as if it had been done on purpose to rush the guests through as the hotel was very full. Of course the quicker you get through your meal means they are saving money two fold - both on food and on the cost of the air con! If we go back again it may be on a B&B basis or on room only and go out to the many little restaurants nearby for our evening meal. It's such a shame because the staff are very helpful and can't do enough for you - and its in a lovely location.

    “Good Hotel But”

The hotel is very clean and tidy with the rooms having a great view over the bay. The food could have been slightly more appealing, breakfast ok with plenty of choices, evening meal was a different matter the choice was more limited and some of the food had no taste at all. The staff were very good and friendly, we did have cause to complain once over the saving of sun beds, this was done at reception and were told nothing could be done, which I was unhappy with. There was a sign up saying sun-beds not to be saved yet every morning when we went for breakfast most of the beds had towels on, there were people out before light with torches putting towels out. We set near a bed with towels on the couple turned up at 13.00 sat for a hour then left, then 2hrs later came and collected their towels and left, if the hotel is not prepared to do anything about this why put up a notice. This would definitely stop us going back to this hotel which is a shame because it is in a great place. Just one final comment most of these towels were put out by English people !!

Dear John, Firstly, we would like to thank you for the review you shared following your recent visit to our Barceló Santiago hotel. We regret reading that apparently, we failed to ensure that our hotel policy, forbidding the reservation of sun beds, was respected during your visit. Your mentioning of this in your review did not go unnoticed and we are pleased to inform you that with immediate effect we will be enforcing the communication reminding guests that reservation of sunbeds without immediate use is forbidden in our hotel. On the other hand, we thank you for pointing out the cleanliness of our installations, being fully aware that this is an aspect of primary importance for our guests to feel comfortable in our hotel, our housekeeping staff undertakes a thorough cleaning of our installations and rooms on a daily basis. Also, we thank you for your very nice compliments for our team, they do work very hard every day to make sure our guests feel well attended to at all times and definitely are an asset to our hotel. “Spectacular setting with fabulous ocean views towards la Gomera and Los Gigantes cliffs”

This hotel has the most spectacular views I have seen, having an elevated cliff top setting with panoramic views from many rooms and the pool area over the Atlantic ocean . The pool area has plenty of sunbeds and we found no difficulty finding one - although if you want the best positions you will need to get up early . We have stayed here before and if anything the hotel is even better .For example there is now no deposit required for pool towels and the food on offer has improved slightly since our last visit . Wi fi is now more extensive and is also free to guests throughout the hotel . The food had also improved since our previous visit [ although some dishes are still too bland]. .There was a good choice of international dishes [ pork and fish seem to be the staple offer ]; however if you are looking for traditional Spanish food you wont find much here . There was also a good range of fresh bread, pastries and salads . Sweets costs mainly of fruits .ice cream and cakes . Breakfasts included fresh orange juice and smoothies as well as the usual toast , cheese, fruit , cold means and eggs/bacon. Staff are excellent be both efficient and friendly . The main dining room offers a buffet fare with some indoor tables having views over the cliffs/sea . It also has an outside dining area where you can view the sunset - however this is popular and a wait for a table is the norm at peak times .The hotel also has a pool bar which serves lighter meals and has lovely views over the ocean and pols which are illumined at night. We had "superior" room on the 8th floor which faced west towards the island La Gomera . It had with fabulous views over the Ocean and a good sized sunny balcony with two chairs and two foot rests. [ There is also an electrically operated awning to keep the sun off the room for those wanting a cooler experience ] . However the room and furnishings in my view were not up to the standard of the rest of the hotel. My main criticism was that our room wasn't that large and the ensuite bathroom was too small [ some might say cramped ] with little space to store items such as wash bags and toiletries . There WAS a separate bidet and toilet area this[screed by smoked glass sliding door ] but it was very small . There was no bath but it had a good sized shower with plenty of hot water. Our wardrobe was on the small side too [ although this wont be a problem if you travel light ] .In addition the room benefitted from two arm chairs, a desk , a safe [ free of charge ] and TV which had a few channels in English [ including BBC1 and ITV - although the latter were satellite and rather grainy pictures ]. The bed was comfortable and there were plenty of pillows and extra bedding if you need it - however these used up some of the limited storage space which was annoying considering the small size of the wardrobe . The room furniture was also little tired & could be of better quality. Overall therefore I would rate the room more as 3 star than 4 star . [ Note the size of the rooms seem get smaller as you get higher - this id due to the stepped nature of design of the main building block - it is however posable to upgrade to a larger site but at an extra charge. ] Finally , If you come by car there is some limited underground parking space available at the hotel [ 10 euros pr day ] however it was full when we were there - this wasn't a problem as there is also some on street parking nearby - useful if you are on a budget . The hotel also offers evening entertainment but to be honest the "Route 66" bar opposite the hotel is far better - it offer live bands playing 60's and more modern music from 9 to midnight in are intimate atmosphere [it appeals mainly to English speakers ]. Despite my criticism of the small hotel room and the blandish food - don't left this put you off - it really is very good and I am sure most people will enjoy their stay here - had the rooms been larger and better furnished i would have rated it 5 stars overall . Puerto Santiago itself is a small and quiet town but it does have a couple supermarkets , a few bars and several cafes/restaurants - some which have lovely views . Nearby Los Gigantes also offers a range of bars and restaurants . You can also taker boat trips from the harbour to view whales and dolphins which live in the straight between Tenerife and La Gomera . There is a beach and more shops nearby at Playa de la Arena [ about 10 -15 minutes walk away ]. If you are looking to stay here the best rooms are those facing North [ these don't get any sun but have a view of the cliffs ] and those facing west / south [which get sun and also have views over he ocean] . Rooms on the east side should be avoided as they only have views over the town and are to some extent affected buy noise from the road and bars opposite . I highly recommend this hotel and would certainly stay here again - it isn't perfect but it is very good - if you don't mind the smallish bedrooms .
