    “Memorial Day Weekend”

Check in: was fairly simple once you got to the counter, but did take longer than normal (waiting in line). Food: The food was average, if that. It seemed as if none of the heaters/warmers to keep the food warm, worked. The food had little to no seasoning, although a variety of options at the buffet. The only late night eat spot was pizza, nachos, and fries upstairs. Room/Sleeping: The bed was average in comfort. Sheets had a few spots in it. No distinct smell when I first walked in. It rained one day during my stay and flooded the entire floor of my room. Needing my room, along with a few others, to be rearranged/taken apart for house keeping to soak up the water. And let me tell you, when it rains in DR, it pours! No room service. When i tried to use the phone, nobody answered. Called all lines (housekeeping, front desk, daycare), and nothing happened. Was actually very concerned on if a true emergency happened, how I would've connected someone in ample timing. Activities/Nightlife: Night life is very basic. You watch a show, then go to the onsite or off site club. Not too many daily activities as well, besides the pool, pool bar, tangible games at the back pool, their planned activities, or the beach. Gift shop is on site. Moderate to high pricing. Location: Location felt secure. Security guard was at the main gate to ensure those entering where indeed residing at that resort. Outside of the gates, however, it is not recommended to walk alone. Drink Point is a popular club that is right outside the gate; maybe with a group of 4 or more. Transportation: Occidental Punta Cana offers shuttle services to and from the airport, varying pricing. Taxis are also around for cheap pricing (this was my recommended method of travel). If you do an excursion, the excursion clerk will set up transportation at no cost, if it is through the hotel. Check out: Was simple. No long line. Nothing to sign. Just returned the room keys and your towel keys (every room has orange towels which need to be turned in on check out. your 'towel key' serves as a token to let the front desk know you turned your towel in, at the towel hut towards the back of the resort). Overall: It provided a place to stay, but had no true hotel atmosphere/night life. I probably don't plan on staying here again. For someone who does stay here, travel in big big groups, so you'll have each-other to make fun. It would be helpful to know a good amount of Spanish as well.

There are no day activities, no room services, (as stated). Food is ok, but needs to be kept hot.. We expected to have some food of the region. None was offered. Ask to havre rooms cleaned in the morning and request extra towels when you get there.

    “Great vacation !”

My husband and I travelled to the Occidental Punta Cana for 10 days and just came back a few days ago. We are a couple (in our early 30s) who were heading for a vacation to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary I must say before going there we read tons of reviews & were very very skeptical. The price for this holiday was great and we didn't want to pass that up! I saw a few people say to email the hotel with any requests you may have before hand and we did just that. We made the booking through our travel agency - booking only the basic room but our agent made a note that we were going there for our anniversary. I emailed the hotel also requesting if we could possible have a room closer to the beach & newly renovated if possible. *CHECK IN- Super fast.. maybe because it wasn't too many of us checking in. The ladies at the front desk look super miserable though, not approachable or friendly what so ever. But we didn't care too much for them as we prob only needed to see them check in & check out. *ROOM- I had asked for a room close to the beach even though it is not the room I originally paid for.. and sprisingly we got just that ! The gentleman who took us to our room settled in our luggages for us, turned on the tv which had welcoming music & turned on all the lights and wished us a wonderful stay. Our room was HUGE! with a "happy anniversary decoration on our front door" ... building 25, 3rd floor - the ceilings were SO tall- king bed, 2 couches, huge balcony, huge washroom, lots of closet / storage space and extremely clean. We were SO happy with our location & room.. probably one of the nicest rooms I have been in on a tropical vacation. *BEACH- omg.. best part!! CLEAN, WHITE SANDS, BEAUTIFUL OCEAN.. lots of chairs available and lots of palm trees for shade if needed.. I can't express how gorgeous this beach is ! The only minor downfall are all the people harassing you while your trying to tan ... asking you to take pictures with the parrots/monkeys, asking you to buy whatever they were selling .. a little annoying - but if you say no thank you then they will let you be. *POOLS- I believe this resort had 3 pools.. 1 of them which is right where there lobby is was the party pool (loud music, swim up bar) super fun & usually the pool that was the most packed. Another pool was steps away from the beach , a little less busy. And one more pool that was actually right infront of our room , this was the quietest pool with instrumental music playing - pool was very shallow.. great to just sit in or refresh yourself. All pools were pretty clean for the most part. *FOOD/DRINKS- We ate at the buffet for breakfast , lunch and dinner and we didn't mind that at all. The food could of been a bit better in terms of variety & freshnss but it wasn't a huge deal. They tried to have different themes each night for dinner and also had a crepe station which was AMAZING! ... breakfast was also nice with 2 stations of those making you omlets, eggs etc.. Also at 6:30 pm opens the pizza + taco stations and I believe their open till late hours in the morning- pizza was great & made fresh for you !! Soft drinks plus Alcoholic Drinks were always available - no long waits at the bar . loved it ! *SERVICE- Service here was a hit of miss depending on the day ... at times it took forever to get a drink at our table.. and once the server would come they seemed annoyed or unbothered to be there. We witnessed this on several days being there by different servers. Many workers only spoke spanish so at times if it was hard to communicate if you didn't know the language. Besides that, a lot of the employees always greeted you when they saw you. Nothing over the top - but polite. *MAID- first few days our room was cleaned before 12 pm... other days it took forever, twice our room wasn't cleaned until 4-4:30 pm and one day we had to call front desk to get at least clean towels because we wanted to shower & our room hadn't been cleaned. Towels arrived quickly(the maid had a bit of a rude look on her face) but room was not cleaned (ah well) One night our safe was not opening, we called front desk to let them know and the security guard was at our room within 10min to help us out ( the batteries ran out ) we tipped him & he was always happy to help ! *VIBE- the hotel caters to many many latin people. We travelled there from Toronto, Canada and I think us + maybe a few other people were from Canada only. a handful from people from the states, and the rest were from either Spain, Columbia, Costa Rica, Chile , and many locals themselves stayed at this resort. LOTS of spanish speaking , barely any english & it was difficult at times to have a conversation especially with those at front desk & waiters when they don't know the english language (or pretend not to ) Also, this resort catered to a lot of families & couples. *ENTERTAINMENT- was great ! each night they had a different show , started a little on the later side, 9:45pm ..but they were so entertaining- lots of chairs & tables to comfortably drink & sit. They also had a foam party on the beach one day! and activities throughout the day time. *SHOPPPING- walking along the beach in either direction (we walked to the right) about a 15-20min walk are approx 6 little shops where you can shop for souvenirs ... they sort of demand you walk in their store.. if you do, bargain with them.. they were pretty fun & cool to talk too! We grabbed some cute things :) There is a couple shops on the actual occidental resort which also had nice things, a little pricey but always bargain . Except for the shop located inside the lobby - those are set prices and are very expensive. * our second day there, a gentleman who had a desk in our building asked us if we wanted to check out their "club status" which required a couple hours from 8am-10am where they show you what you could get upgrading to club status and at the end of the seminar you get a free gift ( massage, free wifi, some occidental gear- you choose and they provide even if you say no to the whole thing)' Stupid us.... we said yes and spent 3 HOURS the next morning listening to b/s..**DO NOT FALL FOR THIS ** WASTE OF TIME. However, we got a free weeks worth of WIFI for doing this... so it worked out lol :) WIFI- Since we did that seminar we got a week free of wifi, if not it was $12 a day (we had to pay for 3 days since we were there for 10).. a little pricey but you do get wifi in the lobby, rooms , pools and beach . MONEY- the front desk does not exchange huge amounts of cash.. if you want dollar bills they will do that. If you are changing canadian to american dollars there is a "bank teller" right outside the lobby.. however exchange rate is insane.. they take almost 50-60% !! I heard that using the ATM has a lower fee, which is right beside the teller. Also, when booking excursions book them within the lobby and not the guys on the beach trying to sell it to you. They also offer a free shuttle service to Avalon Casino ! worth it , if you gamble. All in all I must say that the workers at Occidental work their butts off to make sure this resort is clean & tidy!! there is NO point to opt for the "vacation club " or royal club section as there is nothing drastically different then just booking this resort regularly as it is. In my opinion if you want a room a little more on the quiet side, closer to the beach then ask for buildings numbered 23,24 or 25.. perfect spot. We had overall a wonderful time at Occidental !! I would definitely return! This resort is not a 5 star , but you have to make due & be happy with what you got. After visiting 5 star resorts in Jamaica and Mexico- this resort does need a little bit of TLC in all areas however I would visit back in heart beat ! Thank you for a wonderful stay & gorgeous resort!! =) =)
