    A nice hotel for the value. The snack bar was limited but otherwise lots to eat. Great el la carte variety. Excellent staff over and above felt like family within first day. Clean rooms. Careful with venders changing price after agreed amount is nogatiated

    “Occidental Punta Cana (February 6-13, 2019)”

    In reviews that I read prior to our departure many people felt they were treated like 2nd class guests – I agree. The Occidental management should ensure that ALL GUESTS are treated like VIPs not just the timeshare guests – they are entitled to their perks but we should also be treat with respect – we pay good money to go on vacation – and we should be valued guests. Resort Prior to our arrival I was in contact with Fernanda Gil, Guest Services Assistant regarding our restaurant reservations. She responded promptly to my emails and was very helpful. Upon on our arrival we received excellent service at the reception area. The resort is not very large and everything is not far to walk to. The gardeners are hardworking - always trimming, raking, cleaning everywhere and as a result the vegetation is very well maintained and they do a phenomenal job of taking care of the property. They are very friendly and always great you. Was happy that resort did have dress code for dinner and that it was enforced even at main buffet (exception at one al-a-carte – see below). Everywhere on the resort and on beach you could see security personnel and as a result we felt very safe. One of these individuals was Franklin, he was very personable and friendly. There are Time Share representatives all over the resort. They are at the entrances of the buildings and catch you coming and going – very annoying and they do understand “no thank you”. Beach The beach is beautiful. Plenty of loungers – best ones we have had at any resort we have been to. No small tables on beach, had to “borrow” from pool area. It was windy all week and the waves were challenging yet a lot of fun. The one drawback was that resort does not have any palapas anywhere on beach or pool areas (pool did have some type of one but not enough). You can walk forever in either direction on the beach. We walked the beach in both directions and the Occidental is the only resort that we observed that did not have any palapas. The only shade in provided by the palm trees – what happens is that any shaded area is jam-packed with guests. We were in a shaded area (4 of us) and before you knew it we were sounded by other quests – they have no concept of personal space. Room We were in Building 26 near beach and on ground floor with a terrace. Room was large. Hot water and pressure was sporadic at best but usually good. This building was quiet. The maids and person responsible to restock mini fridge were friendly and very polite. Buffet/Restaurants Food at Buffet was average at best. Normally we do a 2 week vacation but were glad we only did 1. The buffet area was small but seating area was better. The food selection did not seem to change from day to day. Service at breakfast buffet (El Alcazar) was slow. The staff here appeared not to like their work. Example: no napkins at table, coffee had to be requested – the server with coffee would look directly at you from another table and then go in opposite direction, clearing of tables was very slow. On a few occasions a few of the staff were super – greeted you with a smile, provided good service (coffee and/or water) and cleared table. These individuals were few and far between. One thing we noticed was that servers miraculously appeared at your table as your preparing to leave looking for a tip even though service was poor. Lunch buffet (Caracloas – Beach area) similar to El Alcazar buffet. Staff here is also less attentive to guests. Example: again no napkins; no soup bowls or salt and pepper without chasing the staff down. Specialty Restaurants – all have a dress code We went to 4 of these restaurants. 1) Caracolas – Fish This was the only restaurant that did not enforce the dress code (Gentlemen: Shirt with collar, long pants and closed shoes). Two male came to the 6:30 pm sitting in t-shirt and shorts. When I asked hostess about dress code she said that it was not enforced at this one even though the signage is present as you enter. They offered to go change but she told them not to worry about it. Service here was horrible. Was having trouble getting server’s attention to order drinks, therefore went to bar area to order drinks and was informed to request them through staff – OK, finally ordered through server, ordered regular stuff – rum and cokes and 2 Caesars. Caesars were horrible – almost like they didn’t know how to make them. Food was so, so. 2) Las Reves – Steak Some in our party found steak tough. Service was rushed. Placed order and told to go to salad bar. Returned to table, sat down started to eat and appetizers were brought to table. Overall food was not bad – better than buffet. 3) Via Veneto – Italian Service, ambiance was great. Food was also super. Chairs were uncomfortable, seats were too deep, had to sit at front of chair otherwise for those who are not tall, you sat back and your feet did not touch ground. 4) D’Oriental - Asian This was the best of the 4 we dined at. Staff was excellent and attentive, food super, atmosphere great. The only downside was that the restaurant was extremely cold – some guests were smart and brought sweaters. Bars Lobby bar is a place we enjoy going to after dinner to relax and see live entertainment. Not at this resort - to many smokers and vaporers. They are everywhere in lobby area and just outside where they also have tables. Bar service here was questionable. Asked for a lime daiquiri and got a strawberry one instead with a lime wedge. The bar was not a normal one – no menu of drinks/cocktails available and when requesting one, got weird looks. This was at all bars in this resort. They need to hire people who know how to mix drinks. Example: During the day the bar at Caracolas restaurant bar was staffed by one person (sometimes two). 2nd person served beer only and again booze and soda (ex. rum and coke); pina colada and strawberry daiquiri were basically your options. Line-ups were long all the time.

    “Fantastic getaway! Great service and yummy food!”

    There was always something to do and the shows at night were amazing! There were lots of restaurants to choose from and the food was so tasty. The room was lovely and cleaned promptly every day. The beaches were beautiful. I wish that I could go back!

    “Great trip”

    We stayed in 13211 which is very close to the beach and the smaller pool which was fine by us. The room was very clean. The pool was spotless, the beach is clean. The food could have been better but who cares? You're there for the sun and sand. People really seemed to enjoy the animation team. I joined a couple of their water fitness and step classes. I wish they had more bingo by the smaller pool rather than just outside the lobby. If you like walking along the beach head right and eventually you'll come to a bunch of beach shacks where you can purchase beach bags, flip flops, drinking mugs, etc for cheaper than the hotel sells.
