“Great wait staff very poor management”

We talked with several people while here and most say they will not come back. We agree. The room was in disrepair and hair on the toilet seat that we had not used. When we reported this the desk person acted as if we were spoiled and needed to be grateful for what we were given. Spoke to customer service and were told this is no longer their standard and would send someone to clean and repair right away. No one showed up. I cleaned the toilet myself. The food is mediocre at best. Bone found in the hot dog. Super salty food. Almost everything here was disappointing. Music and shows every night literally blare over the speakers till 11 PM. I know this is not too late for most but very frustrating for me. Disappointed that when I asked for comment card to recognize some excellent staff I was told no just trip advisor. I asked if staff that was excellent was commended in any way and they said no. No surprise. The member only catamaran and snorkeling with lunch was a group of people drinking heavily music so loud you couldn't hear yourself think and "lunch" was nacho chips with a broken cheese dispenser. We won't be back here. However, love to staff members: Alexander Frias lobby bar, Yaquline main buffet, Edwin first club beach bar. These people are excellent and made our vacation bareable. They sought us out on the beach to try and upsell us so we would be happier really?? Clean, repaired rooms cost extra?

    “Occidental Punta Cana”

Thoroughly enjoyed Occidental Punta Cana First Club. The First Club staff was great! Rooms were spacious and comfy. Would definitely recommend this resort to all. Pools were great and restaurants were very good. We had friends stay overnight in another room and they were impressed compared to Majestic Elegance

“Generally pretty good- a balanced review”

This was the first time we had been to the Dominican Republic and had a completely 'resort based' holiday, so I want to give as balanced a review as I can given these considerations. We also went right at the end of November when it wasnt too busy, which meant it was quite relaxing. Towards the end of the week at the beginning of December, the resort became a lot busier and the atmosphere changed to being a bit more lively. Overall impressions- The resort itself is hidden down in Punta Cana, and has good security on the gate 24/7. Generally we found the whole resort to be well maintained and the grounds were neat and tidy. They went to great lengths to ensure there was no mosquitoes around by spraying the greenery and treating the pond. There was beautiful fairy lights around the trees in the evening and ground level lights along the paths that add to the atmosphere. The pools- there are 3 pool areas. The biggest of which was the one nearest the lobby with the pool bar. This was the noisiest one, with (not particularly well managed) dance music pumping out of the bar from about 11am all day until about 7pm. The music was ok, but it was clearly a playlist on a loop so once you had heard the same 10 songs, thats all they played the entire day. This could get tedious. There was also a not very well thought through hour or so in the afternoon when the band would do a sound check in the theatre space the other side of the pool at the same time as the bar music which made a dreadful din, and in my mind shouldn't have been happening. The other pool further down was much quieter, with less going on and was far enough away to not be bothered by the music. The third pool down by the beach was mainly used for activities and was much smaller, so we didn't really bother with it, but would have been good for children. The pools were impecably clean and well looked after. The only downside was that none of them were very deep. This meant ironically you couldn't really swim in any of them very far or very well. They are designed for sitting around and dipping, and my impression is they made them shallow so they wouldn't have to provide lifeguards. I felt this was a bit of a shame, as someone who enjoys swimming, seeing all that water and realising 60% of it no deeper than my knees. The rooms- we stayed in a standard room. The air con was very efficient and we had the choice of a ceiling fan too. The only gripe we had was our safe batteries were running low so we didn't want to risk using it. The beds are enormous and comfortable, and we had blackout curtains and the mini bar gets some bottled water and soft drinks most days (not every day which was irritating.) Housekeeping was done in batches, so in the morning the towels would be done, but sometimes the other bits of housekeeping weren't happening until about 4pm which by that time sometimes we were back in the room. Our room was in block 22 so quite near the main area. The restaurants- So we had heard differing reviews of the food so we were unsure as to what to expect. Overall the food was very hit and miss. I got the impression they are trying to cater for a wide variety of tastes and cuisines, but not quite hitting the mark. Breakfast was served in the restaurant near the lobby and was extensive in terms of choice but not always very good in terms of quality. For example, we quickly realised the bacon was not bacon but baked smoked ham slices. There was no fresh milk at all anywhere on the resort. So if you don't like UHT don't bother with milk. There was lovely fresh fruit, some of the pastries were nice, and there was lots of choice of toast and yougurt. For lunch, we preferred the buffet bar down at the beach. Again an odd mix of foods but we could usually find nice salads and paella and the usual hot dogs and pizza. We went to 2 of the 'a la carte' restaurants while we were there. We had the same issue as others have found trying to book tables was very tricky and often weren't available. We tried the Chinese place. The food was awful. The starters were tiny and very poor quality (for example I had spring rolls and it was literally two tiny spring rolls on a huge plate and they weren't very nice). We then had meat dishes for main that were disappointing, came with a bit of rice and nothing else, and then tried the desserts but they were not good and very small portion sizes again. The only redeeming aspect to the Chinese restaurant was that they served sushi as an appetiser that was quite nice. We then tried the Italian restaurant, and it was absolutely lovely. The salad/starter bar was great, the main courses were beautifully cooked and decent portions and the desserts were wonderful. The bars/drinks- The bars are quite strange in that there was no indication what was on offer other than a few bottles behind the counter- they could really do with a bar menu. However, over time I worked out what cocktails there were, and what else they offered. The beer on tap we thought was great. It was nice and light and very drinkable. The same with the 'prosecco'. It wasn't really prosecco but it was very drinkable and went down a treat of an evening. The rum was good too, and I enjoyed a pina colada or two. One thing I would say is the wine they served at the tables was awful, and the white I tried one evening in the main buffet restaurant was undrinkable. We then decided in the Italian restaurant we would buy our own bottle (which were over priced, but we expected that). This was brought out with great gusto in an ice bucket by a sommelier who tended to us for the rest of our meal. This was a nice touch, and that wine was a lot better. The staff- The staff are clearly very hard working. They do not stop. I never saw them hanging around or not giving their absolute best to whatever they were doing. The serving staff were almost too efficient at times, trying to take our plates before we had even finished eating. But they were all without exception, polite, friendly and helpful. The security on the beach were reassuringly present, but not intrusive, and very friendly. I've never been somewhere where the staff make such an effort to greet you and be as friendly as they were, and it was really lovely. The down side I felt was the salespeople the hotel employed for various things, including the spa. They had hotel uniforms and badges but clearly were contracted to sell to unsuspecting new guests. Thankfully we were wise to them beforehand, and you can tell which ones they are as they have clipboards in their hands and lurk around the pool and main paths trying to strike up conversations with people. I did find them intrusive after a while, as once you've said no to one of them, you have to keep doing it with all of them. After a while I became quite rude and just ignored them, as I got a bit fed up with explaining myself. The beach- the beach was well maintained and big enough for there to be plenty of space and choice of sun lounger. We placed ourselves near the boat launch which meant it was a bit quieter and there was plenty of shade if we wanted it. The sea was so warm, and the sand was so soft. They cleaned it every day and it was always neat and tidy. As others have said, there are a lot of people selling things on the beach. Generally they go away or don't bother you if you shake your head or don't look at them. It was sad to see some of them dragging tiny monkeys up and down with them for tourist photos, and it didn't make me feel all that comfortable. We found if we sat a few rows back from the first row of sunloungers we didn't get hassled at all. Cleanliness- the restaurants and public areas were all very clean and tidy, as was the rooms. The only thing I would say is that I don't think they use the same detergents when they clean their laundry there. I noticed the table cloths in the restaurants, the staff shirts and the bedding all looked as though they could do with a bleach and boil wash, as some of them were quite stained. I don't think they were dirty as such, just not very well laundered. The beach towels were also in very short supply and nearly every time we went to the hut to change them they had run out. So we spent a lot of the week with the same slightly damp towels which was annoying and I was a bit disappointed by. Shops- These were very expensive and the staff would give you the hard sell but would quickly offer discounts if you bartered in order to "make the first sale of the day" (they all said this). We bought some nice bits, but one thing we did was we bought a bottle of rum from one of the shops in the little precinct next to reception and it was very over priced as we found the same rum in the airport for nearly half the price (so we bought some more there instead!!) The other thing was that there was no where on site other than the very expensive lobby shop to get nibbly snacks. I had expected the bars to have nuts or crisps or even olives, but they didn't and there was nowhere else. This meant it was tricky if you were only able to get a very late table in the a la carte restaurants and didn't want hot food but wanted something to put you on. The resort is not really near anything else, but to be honest we didn't venture outside of it as we were only there for a week. We had a good time and we found that it did what it said on the tin. I don't think it's quite the same standard as a five star resort would be in the UK, however we would go back based on our experience.

The staff was constantly asking for money or “commision” saying they would get paid $75 dollars if they had breakfast with us and told us about their hotel. When we told them we didnt want to do that, they proceded to say they knew new yorkers had monry and that 20 minutes would them would pay them $75. We had to find an alternate route to our rooms.
