Bahrain is one of the least known of the Gulf countries. Many don’t even know that it is made up of some 30 islands that are connected to the Arabian Peninsula by a 26-kilometre long bridge, the King Fadh Road, which links its main island by road to Saudi Arabia.
One of the most important tourist attractions on its main island, also called Bahrain, are the 21 World Heritage sites in the kingdom of Dilmun. These are thousands of tombs, some of them of royalty, built as small towers. Researchers date them to between 2200 and 1750 BC and for some time they were considered the largest cemetery in the world.
The capital, Manama, is a vibrant city and its souk is home to a tradition that is still important in Bahrain: the pearl trade. But that’s not the only thing you’ll find in its famous souk – there’s also an area for spices, nuts, textiles and tobacco for hookahs.
