Discover Cáceres, a World Heritage City declared in 1986.
This will be a walking tour, exploring its historic center, dating back to the Middle Ages, through its most significant monuments.
We will begin the tour from the Plaza Mayor of Cáceres, a large space dominated by three magnificent towers: the Torre de la Hierba, the Torre de los Púlpitos, and the Torre de Bujaco (inside). We will access the latter to learn about the history of Cáceres, as it houses a museum inside. We will also be able to climb to the viewing point to enjoy beautiful views of the Plaza Mayor.
We’ll continue toward the Arco de la Estrella, the access point to the medieval quarter, arriving at Plaza de Santa Maria, dominated by the spectacular Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria (inside), a showcase of various styles developed in this city, such as Romanesque, Gothic, and Mudejar. In this square, we can also discover the Palacio de los Golfines de Bajo, notable for its 16th-century Plateresque façade. This palace was the home of the Catholic Monarchs when they visited the city.
We’ll continue toward Plaza de San Jorge, where the Church of San Francisco Javier (inside) stands, a prominent icon in the city for its two white towers. We’ll go inside to admire the 18th-century canvas with images of Saint Francis Xavier on the main altarpiece.
We’ll also visit the Cáceres Provincial Museum (inside), where we’ll descend to the beautiful Arab cistern inside.
We’ll cross the old Jewish quarter through Plaza de las Veletas until we reach the tower of the Baluarte de los Pozos (Bass of the Wells), a defensive tower from the Arab era, part of the city’s former Almohad fortress.
Finally, we’ll visit the Los Balbos Forum and the Town Hall.
We’ll conclude this tour with a tasting of typical local products and a selection of local cuisine.
