Every Monday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Chipiona holds a traditional street market that fills Poeta Miguel Hernández Park with colour and a festive atmosphere. It features numerous stalls selling clothing, fruit, footwear, spices, nuts, household items and other basic products. The prices are also very competitive. It is not that big, so you can explore it in a short time, but it has a large variety.
The Chipiona street market is a must if you are on a tourist getaway since it provides a very authentic, colourful and local atmosphere. The residents, as well as the visitors, go to the street market hoping to find a dream item at a good price. Curiously, there are hardly any second-hand stalls at this market.

Location of the Chipiona street market
Poeta Miguel Hernández Park is where the stalls that make up the Chipiona street market are concentrated. It is a very central, well-located and cool spot since it is outdoors among landscaped and wooded grounds. It has plenty of shade, which is greatly appreciated, especially during the intense summer heat.
Strolling through this market is like enjoying a party because the vendors bring out their best Andalusian charm to sell their wares, and visitors put on their best face because most of them are usually eager to find something special. This is a great way to engage with the locals in a relaxed and authentic atmosphere.

Other street markets in Cádiz province
In addition to the Chipiona street market, it is worth visiting the town’s Mercado de Abastos (Food Market) to check out the authentic cuisine from Cádiz and from Andalusia in general.
In Cádiz province, as in the rest of Spain, numerous street markets are held similar to the one in Chipiona, although they all have their own unique knowhow and characteristics. For example, the neighbouring town of Rota holds its market on Wednesdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., on Zoilo Ruiz Mateos Street, with around 100 stalls. The Cádiz market, also known as ‘Piojito’, is very famous and takes place on Mondays with the same opening hours, while the Sanlúcar de Barrameda market is held on Wednesdays with the same opening hours.
The Conil de la Frontera market is held on Fridays, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., on Avenida de la Música and has around 150 stalls. During the summer months, craft stalls are set up on the Plaza de Santa Catalina and along the promenade, selling leather goods, precious stones, fabrics, handbags, art and costume jewellery.

In Chiclana, the market takes place on Tuesdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the fairground. There are around 180 stalls there, where you can find everything you are looking for. The artisans also take advantage of the summer to display their products and costume jewellery next to La Barrosa beach.
In Barbate, the market is held on Thursdays. There, 75 stalls are set up on Avenida de Nuestra Señora del Carmen. At the enormous El Puerto de Santa María market, with more than 190 stalls, the offering multiplies. This takes place on Tuesdays along the pleasant Paseo José Luis Tejada promenade.
In Tarifa, the 50 vendors who sell their products at the weekly market gather at Huerta del Rey every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
If you decide to visit Cádiz, remember to go to its historic Central Market, located on the Plaza de la Libertad. It was inaugurated in 1838 in what was the garden of the Convent of the Discalced. It was in 2009 when it opened, after being renovated, just as we see it now. Among the attractive fish, seafood, meat and grocery stalls, there are some places where you can try local produce. And that is a truly delicious ending.
