The landscape of Las Médulas is not purely natural, but the result of one of the largest engineering operations of the Roman Empire. This excursion offers the chance to understand how human intervention reshaped the terrain into what can be seen today.
After departing from León, you will arrive at this UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the visit begins with an introduction at the visitor centre, providing historical and technical context for the former gold mining activity.
You will then follow a guided walking route through the area, learning about the extraction method known as ruina montium, which dramatically altered the landscape. The combination of reddish earth, vegetation and eroded formations creates a truly distinctive setting.
The experience continues with a stop at the Orellán viewpoint, where the scale of this transformation becomes especially clear.
Afterwards, the tour heads to Ponferrada, where you will have free time to explore the town, visit landmarks such as the Templar Castle, or simply enjoy the local atmosphere before returning to León.
