Description

Throughout history, Istanbul has served as a bridge between East and West thanks to its strategic location along the Bosphorus Strait—a narrow geographical barrier separating Europe and Asia. The Bosphorus has been of vital commercial importance to the countries bordering the Black Sea, as it connects them to the Mediterranean and the world’s major maritime trade routes. This unique position led Istanbul to become the capital of several great empires over the centuries, including the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires.

Known as the City of Seven Hills, Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and the heart of its economy. For more than two thousand years, it has been the stage for major political, religious, and artistic events. Among its many landmarks are the ancient Hippodrome of Constantine, Hagia Sophia (built in the 4th century), Topkapi Palace, Hagia Irene, the Cisterns, and many others—all designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Explore hidden historic sites on this half-day walking tour (5 hours). Your guide will share Istanbul’s long and fascinating history and its global significance. Feel like a local as you enjoy learning about the city’s Byzantine and Ottoman past, as well as present-day Istanbul.

Join a small group (minimum 2, maximum 10 people) for a walking tour of Istanbul’s secret corners with an English-speaking guide.

NOTE: Women visiting mosques must cover their shoulders and knees, as entry is not permitted with uncovered hair, shoulders, or knees. You may bring your own headscarf; wearing long pants or a long skirt is recommended. Men must dress in a way that covers their shoulders and extends below the knees.
