As a link between two continents, Tangier has always flaunted its strategic location. For a long time, this made it attractive to conquerors, including Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Portuguese. The oldest city in North Africa, once a meeting place for spies and intellectuals, is now a favourite destination for many tourists, who come for the medina, the kasbah, the souks and the beaches.
Tangier has become a symbol of the new Morocco, a magical city that enchants its visitors and has adapted to modern life whilst remaining faithful to its own identity and history. Tangier’s climate, location, culture and the comfort of its hotels, such as the Barceló Tanger, make it a truly unique destination to spend your holiday or a short break. This multicultural city is the ideal starting point from which to discover Morocco.
The city is divided into two areas and can be easily visited on foot: the old town or medina and the so-called new city. The Medina or ancient city of Tangier houses a web of alleyways, packed with bazaars of local products, and the Gran Zoco or Plaza del 8 April 1947, on which stands the Sidi bou Abid mosque a landmark from which to observe the day-to-day life of this city.
Strolling through the ancient city you will discover other places of interest: the Rue des Siaghins, Zoco Chico palace, the Great Mosque, the Kasbah or the very heart of the Medina.
Boulevard Pasteur is the thoroughfare of new Tangier and an excellent place from which to take in the atmosphere of this city. A stroll through here cannot end without a visit to the legendary Café Paris located in Plaza Francia square.
Visiting Tangier is also an opportunity to discover the surrounding areas such as Cabo Espartel, just 14 kilometres from the city, with magnificent views from its lighthouse to the Spanish coast; and the Caves of Hercules, beautiful natural caverns invaded by the sea at high tide. The magic of Tangier and surrounding areas is completed with places such as the Asilah Medina and the famous Café Hafa, with terraces at various levels and a viewpoint towards Spain.
Sun worshippers will also love the wonderful beaches and beautiful coastline. The beaches of Tangier, on the Atlantic coast, feature fine, light-coloured sand and are perfect for surfers. Highlights are the Sol, Achakar, Caves of Hercules and Sidi Kacen beaches. The beaches of the Strait of Gibraltar coast are mostly small wild coves and include Merkala beach, the Bay of Tangier beaches and Ksar the Majad beach. From Tangier airport you can go much further and visit other marvellous cities in Morocco where you can stay in another of our hotels.
