“It was nice but somewhat disappointing”

We recently stayed at the Barcello in Cabo. By in large it was ok but I have a few comments. The Pros were: 1/The Italian restaurant was very good. It was really first class dining. I particularly enjoyed the rack of lamb. 2/The staff was like everywhere in Mexico -- pleasant and nice to be with. 3/ The resort is mostly well maintained. 4/ Other breakfast and lunch buffets were good but not as good as other places we’ve stayed. 5/There were a couple of minor problems with the room, (the clock was missing), which were very quickly rectified. 6/The room was well cleaned in a timely manner although it was difficult to get face cloths. The Cons were. 1/ On our arrival with a so called “superior” room we were assigned a room that looked out over an electrical box and the wall of the resort next door. When I inquired, I was told that was a ‘superior’ room and that there was nothing they would do about it. I pointed out that the last time we had stayed in that resort we had brought down a family of 18 and that the resort was at best 25% full. The only way we could get a better room was to pay an additional $20 USD per night, which we did, and got a room overlooking the pool which also gave us a view of the ocean. 2/ They have what is called a premium package we had used previously. It does give you access to a room with some food that is the same as the buffet pretty much except with less choice. It also give access to a couple of computers. We were told that was $78 USD per day. Not worth it. 2/ I forget the weekly charge, but the daily charge for internet access was $9.00 USD a day. The next time we inquired it was $12 USD per day. This is the only place we have recently stayed in that charged for internet. We felt that their goal was to squeeze as much money out of us as possible . Our concerns were secondary. 3/ We were in building 3. That building has 3 elevators with one at each end and one in the middle. Two of the elevators did not work at all and the 3rd was more interesting. About 75% of the time it ‘stopped at every floor even when going from the 1st to the 5th floor. About 20% of the time it worked normally and a couple of times it didn’t work at all. All in all it was nice but I suggest that there are things that with not a lot of effort they could improve on. Also, charging the amount that they do just to get a virtually no cost item such as wifi, just leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

    “"heated" pools not heated!”

First, let me say, we have been here many times and love everything else about it. You can read about that in my past reviews. I'll list some nice things at the end of this one. BUT, this time, they have made us so angry, we may not return. Their website has been advertising heated pools for some time now. Last May, when we were there, the pools were heated. Not by the sun, but obviously, by their fairly newly installed heaters. So, we (wrongly) assumed the pools would be heated in November, (highs in the low 80s and lows around 70) when it was just a bit colder than last May. The big reason we go to Barcelo is because we love to spend almost all of our time in the pools- swimming, playing basketball or with inflated float toys, sitting at the swim up bar, etc. There were a bunch of guests sitting around the pools, and only a couple of brave children got in to play. The aerobics classes were cancelled- even the instructors didn't want to be in the pool. No pool volleyball. Over the first three days of our trip, this is what we were told- The story I got at first from a pool cleaner and the front desk was that the heaters were broken, and would be fixed by the next day. But then an honest activities guy said, frankly, he had not heard that the heaters were broken- he thought that they had just not wanted to turn them on for the season yet. Then I spoke with a very nice front desk manager who said other guests were also complaining. Yet, he said, the person in charge of deciding when to turn on the heaters made the decision to leave the heaters off. We did not pay a reduced price for this vacation. If they advertise heated pools, and don't provide them, they should offer reduced rates, or just not lie about heated pools in the first place. Why, when you have so many guests who would like to be in the pools, do you decide to ignore them? Why not just spend a little money and turn on the heaters to make your guests happy??? We DID enjoy being with the friendly staff in La Isla snack bar and bar. Irene made us guacamole (and we tipped her, like we do every year) and even delivered a special plate of it to my boyfriend as were we sitting there on our last morning. Lots of people were also asking us about guacamole- they don't keep it at the snack bar anymore- no idea why not. They have lots of other food choices there. Our favorite part, as usual, was the fantastic bar tenders and servers. Agripino is the maestro of them all- ask him to make you a Chupa Cabra and he will know we sent you. We always bring our drink book and he and Alfredo make up new drinks for us. We will also miss seeing Luis, Horacio, Francisco, Jorge, Juan, and all the others who served us while were were sitting beside the freezing pools.

    “Disappointed”

We found out upon arrival that our ‘all inclusive’ isn’t actually all inclusive. We had to pay for Wi-Fi which is spotty all the time, we had to pay for room service as well because we can’t get any food past 10 otherwise. Guacamole can’t really be found anywhere unless you request it. Breakfast food is okay. We requested more water because house cleaning didn’t replenish the bottles and they had to ‘verify’ that we in fact didn’t already get some water. Today we left tip for house cleaning and returned at 3:30 to no house cleaning service done but tip gone. We have tried to called guest services 4 times since but nobody is answering. Again, we are disappointed. Won’t be staying here again. I wouldn’t rate this a 5 star at all.

    “No improvement”

This place has the absolute worst WiFi on the hotel strip in San Jose. They want 34 USD for a week and it doesn't even work. It's free next door at the Royal Solaris. Management has been aware of the quality and price issue for 5 years. As a business person, I need WiFi that works ... last stay here.
