    “Barcelo Maya Beach”

Greatly enjoyed our stay here. The resort is lovely, staff is friendly. I would caution to investigate if there is a concert event going on during your planned stay. The venue was being constructed while we were at the resort and although it did not inhibit our vacation in any way, i would not have liked to be there when the event was taking place if my intent was relaxation.

    “Amazing gym, great facilities!”

I am really enjoying my stay at Barceló! The staff is friendly and the food is very good. The hotel is very clean and tidy and nicely designed. The snorkeling at the resort is fairly good. The coral is a bit tired but the fish are quite plentiful and varied. Rays and turtles are common. Antonio with Transat is awesome! I have been to many resorts and the gym here is by far the best one I have seen at a family friendly resort. I especially want to thank Pamela at the fitness center! She has been extremely helpful and is always friendly and polite. Bahia Divers for scuba has been awesome. They are very accommodating and excellent hosts. I will definitely return. Thanks to everyone who has made the vacation so enjoyable for me and my kids!

    “Amazing Beach!”

We arrived through a West Jet Vacations Package to the "Barcelo Maya Grand Resort" and our package was "Superior Run of the Room" so we didn't actually know which hotel at the resort we would be staying in. We were placed in the Maya Beach portion of the resort and it was wonderful. We arrived early in the morning and they we great about offering us a hospitality room that was right off the lobby to change/shower if we needed to, and then took our bags for safe keeping. The Maya Beach and the Maya Caribe portion of the hotel/lobby areas look to have had recent renovations and are slightly more modern than the Colonial and Tropical. The Palace was off limits with the package we had. I was looking for a particularly nice beach for this vacation as I find the beaches in the area can be hit or miss. This beach was BEAUTIFUL! There are so many trees tons of beach chairs and all the pools/beach bars/bathrooms/towel areas were all in close vicinity, and they constantly had staff walking up and down the beach picking up your empty cups. The further you get towards the Maya beach side the softer the sand. There was the odd rock you would step on but for the most part the beach soft, and seaweed free most of the days. The further you got towards the palace side the rockier it became (although there were soft entry points into the ocean). The benefits of the rocks and coral were that you were able to snorkel right off the beach, we even met two turtles on our travels. Pools were also great, nice and clean although sometimes busy. Around the pool they had hammocks available which was a lovely way to waste away the afternoon in the shade. The resort is quite large, and I didn’t notice accessible transportation solutions within the resort for those that were unable to walk. I didn’t mind the walking but am childless and in good health. I can imagine if you had small children, or a disability/injury of some sort that made getting around difficult the walking might become tiresome after a while. That is not to say transportation doesn’t exist throughout the interior of the resort, I just didn’t see it. If that is something you need more research might need to be done. That being said, they do have a Double Decker bus that runs all day that will pick you up in the lobby and it circles to the other 5 lobbies in the resort. This comes in handy late at night when you are tired and just want to go home after dinner as the a la carte restaurants are spread out through all buildings. Food was just ok, and I am not a pick eater. Tons of selection as usual, but I didn’t notice much of a change-up through the nights and there seemed to be some more “authentic” dishes available vs what you might eat at home, but that’s part of travel! The buffet eating areas are poorly lit, they do have nice outdoor areas but if you got there too late there was no availability. Also, as you'll note below I had a small problem with the cleanliness of only certain things the table tops being one of them, they never truly looked clean to me. The staff... all the staff I encountered were polite and pleasant, however I only ran into a few that looked truly happy to be helping us out despite tipping well. No complaints overall. The Rooms… Beds/bedding/pillows were quite comfortable, mini bar always stocked and they gave you room slippers and robes, the iron, and hair dryer were also great. That is where the compliments end. The rooms need a definite upgrade. Walls were quite thin, water pressure was low if you were showering during peak times (something I often encounter at resorts, not really their fault), and I wish they would have stepped it up a couple of notches with the cleaning, particularly the floors thank god for the slippers. Perhaps it was my fault for not bringing it to their attention… I was having problems with my room key, it was deactivated 3 different times, annoying as heck... although my friends card always worked fine. They kept saying to keep it away from my phone, but I honestly don’t think that was the problem as I was doing my best to listen to that advice and it was still deactivating. I did a bit of research when I came back and some people were saying if you had a purse with a magnetic clasp to keep it away from that, which I suspect was the problem. Speaking of phones, our package came with “resort credits” which are not resort credits they are resort discounts. With the discounts wi-fi for the week cost us$35 US dollars and that is good for 2 devices and we had no troubles even on the beach. Overall I would say the vacation was great, small issues here and there, but the beauty of the beach made up for it all. I don't know that I would pay peak prices to stay here again but if the right deal came along I would consider another stay.

    “Great location”

Barcelo Maya Beach has one of the best beaches. Service is excellent but rooms needs remodeling, getting old. Night entertainments are the same for last 3 years and every week they repeat them. Pools and beach are excellent. Overall we love to stay their during vacation.
