“Very nice resort, EXCELLENT staff, rooms need attention...”

All in all a very nice stay at Maya Beach. The staff are absolutely wonderful going out of their way to make you happy. The resort itself is something out of a vacation booklet. Very meticulously maintained and clean. Now for the rooms.... We booked the premium package thus having one of the better rooms. Ours had a very musty smell to it and the tile floors were wet from the humidity even with the ac on. Cleaning staff do a decent job. Damp rid is a MUST in the rooms this time of year. Food is good...not great. Remember your in Mexico, not your own country so it’s not going to be what your used to. Would we come back....absolutely...

    “Almost perfect.”

My girlfriend and I just returned from a two week holiday at the Barceló Maya Grand Resort where we stayed in the Beach hotel. After a long flight, things started with a minor hiccup as our transfer dropped us off at the Palace hotel. We booked the holiday with British Airways but were unable to book a specific hotel within the resort. We were told that the hotel would liaise with the transfer company and inform them off the correct hotel, but there was clearly a breakdown in communication. The Palace and Beach hotels are at opposite of the resort and it's a long way from one to the other. We were told to get the resort bus outside the hotel, which took almost half an hour to arrive and initially, the driver wouldn't let us on with our suitcases. We just pleaded with him until he changed his mind. When we finally arrived at the Beach hotel, the check in process was easy and quick. We then visited Guest Services to purchase wifi and book our meals at the a la carte restaurants. We were provided with eight a la carte meals for our two week stay. The wifi cost $64 USD for two devices for two weeks and was the most reliable wifi I've experienced at a hotel, providing coverage everywhere. The hotel buffet was okay but not great. Breakfast was very repetitive but offered enough choice to avoid going hungry, including fresh omelettes and pancakes. The lunch buffet was also quite competitive but the only place where fries were available, along with hot dogs, pizza and local dishes. You could also get pasta cooked to order. The evening buffet offered theme nights to avoid repetition but again, most of the food was just okay. Nothing was great, but it was edible. However, we visited the Spanish, Mexican, Italian, Steakhouse and both Japanese a la carte restaurants, all of which were good. We had show cooking at both Japanese restaurants which was fun and provided two of the best meals during our stay. Book your restaurant visits early to get the best possible times. They are a great way to break up the constant buffet visits. We didn't opt for the premium package, so we had a basic but spacious room. It was very dated but comfortable and the air con/ceiling fan combo helped us stay cool at night. We were also restricted to local alcohols as we didn't have the premium package, but found the beer (Corona) and spirits to be absolutely fine. Nice cocktails and no complaints. The staff work tirelessly and are polite and helpful. They don't ask for tips, but I would encourage you to do so. They deserve it. The grounds at the hotel are incredibly well looked after and it's a truly beautiful place to stay. The evening entertainment repeats on a weekly basis, and it was quite good on some nights and not so good on others. There is an onsite travel agent that enables you to book excursions with ease. All of trips were booked and were problem free. The hotel is cash free except for the Mexican Plaza Market, so any excursions will be charged to your room or are payable by credit card. If you have any leftover cash, you can use it to pay all/part of your room bill upon checking out. Our three excursions were to Cozumel Island, Chichen Itza and Xcaret. Cozumel Island offers some great places to snorkel, a visit to a quiet beach with crystal clear water and brief tequila tour/tasting. Chichen Itza was a very long day with a lot of travelling but was great fun. Our tour guide was very passionate about Mayan history and very knowledgeable. A trip we would highly recommend. We'd also highly recommend Xcaret park, which is quite close to the Barceló Maya Grand Resort. We saw a range of animals (including a wild sea turtle being rescued and returned to the sea), swam through two (there is a third) underground rivers and done an underwater sea trek where we encountered countless fish and wild stingrays. It was an incredible day. We also swam with dolphins at the hotel resort, which was a great experience. The hotels grounds are vast and the dolphins should be provided with more space, but it's easy to tell that they are well cared for and happy. Overall, we had a fantastic holiday and would be happy to return one day. With the exception of the buffet food, the hotel is perfect. It's huge and offers something for everyone to enjoy. Our only other gripe was the constant rudeness that we encountered (not from staff). It often seemed like we were the only people with any manners or politeness. Other guests were rude, pushy and would often walk past the 'wait here to be seated' sign and steal someone else's table. It was something that we also encountered on day trips. It seemed that locals begrudged tourists being there, despite the huge tourism industry in the area. It wears you down after a week or so and becomes very difficult to ignore. But we'd just like to emphasise that the staff themselves were all very friendly and helpful, despite our very poor knowledge of Spanish.

    “Beautiful Resort with issues”

Major water leak in closet --ruined a $350 Tumi bag and every piece of clothing got wet and smelly--argued with front desk for entire day - finally agreed to move us. After investigating a bad smell in 2nd room, found 2 mouse traps and a DEAD mouse under sofa!!! Front desk and Mgmt. were very unapologetic, even acted bothered with our issues. They offered us free wi-fi as compensation (really)??? and never followed through. Resort was very beautiful and grounds well maintained, however most of the employees were very blah. Food was a MAJOR disappointment --quantity over quality! My daughter was sick with diarrhea and vomiting for 3 days. Best meal was at Kyoto--other Ala carte restaurants seemed to serve recycled

“alright stay... feel I could have got more for my money”

I just got back from a 6 night stay at beach maya. It was ok. The rooms are very outdated. The beds are very stiff. DO NOT EXPECT NICE HOTEL PILLOWS. The sheets felt like I was sleeping on sand paper. The room was very hot and humid every night. We called the front desk 3 nights in a row and they promised to send someone. No one ever came. food was great, entertainment was great, but for the amount we paid we could have slept in a comfortable without humidity that had working AC. Probably will NOT be back. ALSO PACK BUG SPRAY AND BEWARE WITH BEE'S THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!
