“We traveled as a family and need a room with two beds but only received a king room.”

They told use it not guaranteed you receive a double room even if you request one. It’s based on availability. And we basically told nothing can be done unless we paid upgrade fee of $170+ per night. Was not impressed with there willingness to remedy the situation.

    “Vacation at your own discretion”

Upon arrival, this resort seems like the best thing your money could have bought you. The lobbies are nice, there are small water passages everywhere with fancy flamingo statues in them, nice looking chairs in the middle of the water, and giant pools and bars everywhere. Once we checked into our room, we were greeted with a nice scent of either mold or damp clothes. The sheets had some questionable stains on them, and the comforters had holes in them. Overall, the rooms had very outdated décor and appeared as if it was from a hotel in 1970. On top of that, this resort only has WiFi in two places for about three hours a day. To have internet access anywhere else, you must pay extra ($12/day). My sister and I enjoyed the vibe of the resort in our first hour of being there, and then we visited one of the poolside snack bars. We just wanted some chips and guac, but instead we got something that was most likely from a jar that loosely resembled guac. Let's say that I've had better guac in the States. We were hoping that maybe only the snack bars had bad food, and that the buffet restaurants would be better, so we waited until dinnertime to eat the buffet. It didn’t take us long to realize that the food bordered inedible. The sheer quantity and variety of food in the buffet will impress you, but once you start to try it, your appetite will quickly diminish. Even simple staples such as pizza and pasta managed to taste terrible. The cheese on the pizza always tasted like it was spoiled. After not being able to stomach the food in the regular buffet, I tried eating the food that was in the kids’ section. The sandwiches with chocolate hazelnut spread looked promising, so I tried them, only for the bread to taste like it had been recycled from about five days before. After the kids’ food had failed me as well, I resorted to eating the “fresh” fruit, some of which was obviously rotten. The few good pieces of fruit would be my sustenance for the rest of the trip, along with the Fruit Loops and milk for breakfast. A common theme here is that nothing that is cooked at the resort tastes like food, including the a la carte restaurants. We tried the Japanese restaurant Tokyo and Italian restaurant Capri during our stay. Tokyo had decent food that was made in front of us at the teppanyaki tables, and thus we were able to trust its quality. It was still not the best food, but it was definitely higher quality than the buffet restaurants, which at this point was not very hard to beat. When we went to Capri, the stinky cheese pizzas struck again, along with some mushroom ravioli that had raw veggies in the sauce, which in itself, seemed like a reduced version of the minestrone soup they had served us right before. The filling of the ravioli was inedible after the first bite. Dessert was tiramisu that was probably taken from the buffet restaurants from five days ago. It looked good and even tasted nice, until your tongue hit the layer with the stale cake. My exact words to my sister were, “It’s pretty good…wait, its actually kind of stale…wait, it’s really stale.” I don’t consider myself to be a picky eater by any means, but this food tested my limits for sure. In terms of resort facilities, if you are coming with kids, steer clear of the adult pools, where women are lounging around topless. The drinks at all of the bars are extremely weak, and the drinks at the beach bars look like they have muddy water in them sometimes. The bartenders at the beach bars are also very unenthusiastic. Other than that, the staff was very friendly and helpful, except for the people at the excursion agency that is affiliated with the resort. If you want to book an excursion, do it through the third party agencies that are sitting near the front of the resort during the day. DO NOT book with the affiliated agency because they will try to rip you off with their below average tours and excursions and will give you an extremely hard time cancelling if you find a better deal elsewhere. Overall, choose this resort if you are a budget traveler and are okay with not having good food on a vacation. For me, food makes or breaks a trip, so I will not be returning to this resort. For what you pay, the other facilities are very nice and the resort looks just like the pictures. It is very clean and presentable at all times and you will definitely feel like you are on vacation, but beware of the things listed above before booking.

Dear Guest, Thank you for staying with us and taking the time to let us know about your experience at Barceló Maya Beach. I’m sadden to hear your stay was anything less than memorable. We are very concerned that none of our services were to your approval and/or liking. We understand that every person is different and has different tastes; however, our team always tries to accommodate all the guests’ needs as we are always striving for excellence in the service. At Barceló we understand that food and drinks are important aspects of our guests’ overall expérience, this is why our chefs have created a varied assortment of options to please every type of palate. Our Executive Chefs follow a two weeks menu rotation including a wide array of both local and international delicacies to cater for all diet requirements and please the most demanding palates, this is why we are sorry to read that we were not able to conquer yours and will make sure to discuss your critics with our team. We apologize once again and we sincerely regret that your opinion, differs with the great majority of our reviews. Regards, José Luis Serratos Subdirector Barceló Maya Beach

    “Sargassum escape”

We have been traveling to the Rivera Maya for the last 10 years, This is one of our favorite locations. This year we are going to try Barcelo-Occidental in Nuevo Vallarta on the Pacific side. The Baha is too much desert for us, so we are hopefull that all the reviews are accurate and I will report on this change June 15 when we get back. We are so sad of all the seaweed. We will return when and IF the sargassum subsides.

    “Beautiful Barelo resorts and location!!!”

This is our 3rd trip to barcelo and still impressed! so much to do for the kids! Each hotel has their own kids play swim area. The biggest is in the tropical and Palace. But is in short walking. The food is great! Everyday is different. In my opinion Tropical and Colonial offered more choices in the restarunt then caribe or maya beach. This year beach was so dirty with weeds but we managed to find clean spots to swim:) especially jumping from the pier was fun!
