A hotel with history in the Aragonese Pyrenees

Canfranc Estación, a Royal Hideaway Hotel occupies the emblematic Canfranc railway station, opened in 1928. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2002, the station has been the protagonist of important historical events and, thanks to its transformation into the largest luxury hotel in Canfranc, it now writes a new story linked to the 21st century and its legacy. Its history is closely related to the railway union of Spain and France, opening new mobility possibilities for passengers and goods.

The works on the Somport tunnel, a key piece of the project, were carried out between 1908 and 1912, but it was not until 1928 when the station was inaugurated, in an event that was attended by King Alfonso XIII and the President of the Republic. French Gaston Doumergue.

Canfranc's important link with France is evident in its architecture, with a style reminiscent of nineteenth-century French stations and which we identify in buildings such as the current Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Designed by the architect Fernando Ramírez Dampierre, it features elements so characteristic of this period such as slate roofs, dormers, art-deco pinnacles and a large central dome. Built entirely of concrete, iron, stone and glass, Canfranc station is also considered one of the greatest jewels of Spanish industrial architecture.
