“First Time in Cancun - Pretty Good”

A few things to be aware of... When you book your reservation your room and preferences are requests, not guaranteed. Also for all of the restaurants, you have to book your dinner reservations as soon as you get there. They fill very fast. And for the restaurants, men are required to wear long pants, no shorts!!!!

    “Great family resort”

Very nice place for family vacation. Great food great beach. Service was excellent. Everyday we ate lunch at Rancho Grande Griil and pool bar. Great service I would like to mentioned Esdras Guitirrez he was so polite he served us with a smile at all time. I would go to visit the same place again. 👍😊

“Almost perfect for all types of vacationers”

Just came back from spending one week at this resort. I must say, it was one of the nicer stays we had. Very pleasant crew, nice accommodations, and excellent food and drink selection (especially if you know what you want and how to mix it). Wanted to give a shot out to the Dressel Diving desk, specifically Martyna, Marcello, Rachel, PJ, Yann and Blanca... thanks for making the certification process and diving a fun experience! Hope to see you, and perhaps dive again in the future. The only reason I did not give the resort five stars is the somewhat outdated and discomforting mildewy smell in the room.

“Average to Good depending on your needs”

First trip to Barcelo. Great beautiful beaches - the water is crystal clear. It is rocky as others have noted but the temp is great and the sand and water are amazing. We stayed at the Colonial which I think is the same as the Tropical. Water / Pools - ocean great, not a lot of seaweed but rocky beaches. Pools very large, plenty of space. Could use more cleaning throughout day & night - mornings you would find debris and straws etc. Water Park area for kids - this was excellent for kids. There is a smaller baby area near the Caribe I think but the one at the Colonial is perfect for young kids (age 4-12). They have a larger one at the Palace you have to pay extra for - don't think it's needed. Food - this was the biggest letdown. There is enough food at the buffets but it's all average at best. More Americanized and nothing special. We ate at a lot of the restaurants and nothing really stood out. Better food than the buffet but no single plate was something I'd have to have again. This could be improved. Amenities - tons of things to do. Great place if you just want to stay at the resort. They have a theatre which actually played some good shows. You can do non-motorized water sports for free (get there and sign up early), pool table, kids club, basketball, tennis, soccer etc. Definitely a great place to find things to do. You can walk to the mall and play free mini golf during the day. Rooms - second biggest disappointment. Average hotel room, not a resort feel at all. Had some issues with clean blankets throughout the stay. Smaller room sizes even when we booked a Jr. Suite. The bathroom has closet like slotted doors which do NOT give enough privacy. Just be aware that you can see through at parts and hear most of what happens in the bathroom. Bugs - yes, there are bugs - tons of ants & mosquitos. We were on the ground floor which may have made it worse. There were some ants that got into the room. I expect this given the tropical climate but be aware the ants bite. Preferred Club- we always opt up for the PC but this time it was not worth it. Very little by way of perks in the PC. Everyone was very nice and you could go into the club for water bottles and some liquor but there was no bar and no real food / snacks like we've had at other preferred clubs. You do get endless towels and easy check in /out. They will give you free 24 room service but we never used that option. This was a disappointment. Staff - overall great staff and everyone seemed to be willing to try and help out. There are those that are friendlier than others but overall did not have any issues. One item to note was that you could tell that those that spoke Spanish got better treatment then those that did not. I guess this should be expected since we are in another country but it was noticeable. And tipping is expected here even though they say it's not. Overall good stay, would most likely go back again. The beach is amazing and there is plenty to do. If you have kids they'll be happy to stay here. As for other excursions, our fav was Rio Secreto. Xel Ha was ok but we did not make good use of our time. That is best for older kids. Our 4 year old could not do most of the fun stuff like zip lines, cliff jumps, slides etc.

    “Vacation Summary”

Really nice resort Hotel very clean Was very unhappy with customer service Checking in was a nightmare Over 1hour waiting in line to just check in Front desk employees very slow and not very friendly Pool bar (near our room ) was filled with kids sitting at bar. Frozen drinks not very frozen or thick Bartenders were very lazy and seemed to ignore and walk away into the back room if not wanting to wait on you. We had one exceptional server at the Colonial buffet He went out of his way to take care of us His name is Carlos Ortiz Wish he worked the dinner shift also He was really the only employee that gave us top notch service The buffet managers were ignorant When servers went to the bar to get ordered drinks they did not acknowledge customers being seated Some customers were ignored for long periods of time Very Lazy Staff ! The food and service was really good at all of the specialty restaurants Our room was nice Very clean Did not like location of room Right in front of the theatre Very loud until after midnight No rooms available to switch too (so they say) Lots of water slides and water activities for children of all ages We are going to take our grandchildren next year

Dear Guest, Thank you for sharing a review of Barceló Maya Colonial. It does indeed sound from what you describe that some aspects of your stay did not meet our usual standards of service; please accept our sincerest apologies for failing to make your stay with us a perfect moment of relaxation, we sincerely appreciate you taking the time to bring this matter to our attention. It is also with great concern that we have read your comments on our réception team as it is renowned in the hospitality industry that the first 10 minutes at the réception and the last 10 upon check out contribute greatly to the reputation of a hotel; please be assured that your comments have been shared with the concerned managers so they can make the appropriate adjustments in the areas you mentioned. Thank you once again for making us your choice hotel and for your constructive critics, we certaily look forward to serving you again and to have the opportunity to exceed you expectations in a not too distant future.
