    “The Wal-Mart of All Inclusives”

I just wrapped up a large family vacation at the Barcelo Maya, and have to say, it left me disappointed. Rather than droll on, I'll just cut to the chase. POSITIVES: * The beach is the 2nd best I've ever been to (trailing only a beach on Moorea in French Polynesia). There's a reef off the coast, so the waves are very small. There are great small pockets of reefs close in, so the snorkeling is pretty good. The beach also has a ton of chairs, and enough palm trees for decent shade. The only improvement they could make would be (a) food service on the beach, and (b) shaded chairs. (A+) * The pools are great. I'm not really a pool person, but they're beautiful and expansive. If you have smaller kids (4-10), they'll loves all of the slides & fountains, along with splash pads. (A) * Great area with shops & markets, where amazingly, the prices are really good (aside for alcohol/wine). (A-) NEGATIVES: * The food at the buffets is mediocre at best. We ate at the buffet for breakfast 4x, lunch 4x, and dinner 2x. Literally, the only thing I had that I would say, "wow, that was good", was the rib eye. Everything else was on the level of what you'd get at a mall food court. We ate at Fuego & Kyoto for dinner. While both were better than the buffet, neither was so remarkable that you'd choose to go there if it was in your town. Also, you can't eat at the nice restaurants every day. We were here 4 days and only were "allowed" to go to a nice restaurant twice out of 16 meals. (C-) * The wines served at ALL of the restaurants are mediocre. They have an extensive wine list at every restaurant, but the prices are absurd. They are selling wines that cost $12 in a local store for $100. (C+) * The mixed drinks are horrible. Flat out horrible. Not even "decent". (F) * The service staff are unresponsive & indifferent. The day we checked in, we told them we had two babies and needed to cribs. We'd put it on our reservation as well. To their credit, when we got to the room, one crib was set up, but the 2nd was missing. So, we called. They said they'd bring one ASAP. It never showed. So, we called again. Same story. We then called again. And again, they never brought it. We're talking about an INFANT! So, at 10:30 PM, we finally just made a sleep area on the floor and put her down. The next day, we called for another crib. It never came. Called again. It never came. (F) Later that day, a fuse in the bedroom blew. So, none of the plugs worked. We called & they said they'd have someone fix it while we were at dinner. 3 hours later, still not fixed. On a separate day, we called for extra blankets, since we needed them for padding, since they never brought a 2nd crib. They never brought the blankets. We also called for more mineral water, but they never brought that either. I finally had enough, and went to the front desk, got a manager, and made sure everything was taken care of. Absolutely inexcusable that a BABY has to sleep on the floor, b/c 9 calls to the front desk won't result in a crib being delivered to the room. While the Barcelo Maya may be a fit for some families, it's just not for us. We had a good time, in spite of the many, many issues. But, it's just a low budget kinda place. If Wal-Mart opened an all inclusive resort, you would not be shocked by anything. But, the point of an all inclusive is service & food. The service is average to poor, and the food is mediocre. The beach is awesome, and it's darn near good enough to make me want to come back. But, you can stay at a nicer hotel, and even with paying for everything you eat/drink, you'll come out even. And, you'll get M-U-C-H better food & service in the process. We stayed at the Fairmont Mayakoba 2 years ago, paid less than Barcelo, at much, much, much better, were pampered at every step, and had a much more luxurious experience.

    “Don't wast your money”

The Con's... Customer service is very poor. Check in was fast but no one showed us where are room was or even how to get there. When you come into the front lobby it is big but there is nothing going on in or near the front lobby. Internet There is no free internet for you to use in your cell phone....if you want to use the internet you have to go to guest services and use the computer. If you want to pay for the internet then you have to go to guest service, let them know you want it but then to pay for it you need to go back to the front desk and tell them you want to pay cash for it, but they tell you, you need to go back to guest service (its a big circle. They only use the phone once they see that you are getting mad and upset with them.) So once you have bought the internet and you have more then one person that would benefit for it....you are told that you can only use one device at a time (you need to log out before the other one is able to log in.) The main buffet is not set up the right way for flow....It is just different blocks that are set close by so it hard to see and get food. The restaurants on the other hand....the food is very good. (we went to the Sea food and the Japaneses restaurants. The beach near our part of the resort was very rocky....but ig you walked down towards the "Beach report" it was very nice. Buying on the resort If you wanted to buy something in the resort you need to open a charge tap that goes onto your room. (ok find we found things we wanted to buy so we open one, was told we were able to pay cash once we cheek out. On check out we told them we wanted to pay cash it that seem to be a big problem for them. Then asked them since we are paying cash that it will not be added onto the credit care. They said Yes and I came home and see it on my credit card. So over all i would not come back here nor would I suggest someone to come her as well. All in all I would not wast my money coming back to this resort due to the back customer service and not having alot to do unless you have small children.

    “Wonderful holiday!”

This is an amazing resort. We tend to look for larger resorts and with this resort you stay at one play at four which is awesome. Its has the longest beach and an unbelievable amount of beach chairs all placed out very neatly every day. The beach and sand is amazing. Bring your snorkel gear as there is lots to see. Lots of pools /chairs but we are more beach people. The bar at the pool is always very busy so a bit of a wait to get your drink. We visited the other resorts within the barcelo and ate a few but we really like the Colonial the best. The food was really really good. I was so looking forward to the quacamole and I was not disappointed! There is so much food there that you will not have any problem filling your plate. We had some of the best service we have ever had and really want to send a shout out to Vanessa Jimenez who would teach us new words everyday and to Moises Guerra you never lets your glass get empty!. Our room was wonderful and never had any issues. It was clean everyday and they always restocked the fridge and checked everyday if we need more towels or more water. I just can't say enough about this resort and their customer service. Thomas at the front desk is always will to help. We have been to the Mayan about a dozen times, always different resorts. But I can honestly say that we would go back to this resort without question

    “Not great”

Check-in took 45 min. Shower didn't work. Became sick from the food. Staff called at 8am on a Friday, waking us up, to ask about a return shuttle time a few days from now. Thin walls, can hear everything.

“Awesome & trying, but not perfect yet.”

All the communication, bookings, and welcome smiles were great! March end 2017 seems still like a perfect getaway trip time in Mexico. Not too hot & not cold at all! 80+F, small devoted groups, but rather quiet time in the resort. Entertainment is kept to the minimum. Didn't see much of the shows or offerings for kids in Colonial? All clean. Distances NOT too crazy. Staff is well mannered, always smiling, but missing some key training. Again, I don't blame the staff at all. I blame the management for not training. That's all. Dont get me wrong it was all worth it, and would turn back time to go over and over again..! Perfect location, spotless beach, amazing staff!
