    “Awesome!!!”

The hotel is very comfortable and clean. The beach is beautiful with white sand and a blue dream. Variety in the food but the thematic restaurants (Italian, steaks, oriental) are wonderful. What I liked the most and inspires me to return soon is the service. From the reserve girls Evelyn and Olga, I do not have to thank them for so much patience and kindness, the super nice and helpful Nativity maid, Don Emilio and his smile and his willingness to assist us in the bar, the guys in the main restaurant very attentive and helpful and a super special mention for a formidable human being, with extraordinary characteristics, a leader like few, a young person out of series that we had the opportunity to know and who gave us the warmest of attentions: Juan Carlos García THANK YOU SO MUCH !! ! You're an angel. Successes and blessings for you. :)

    “Tropical Paridise!!!”

My family had the luxury of staying in the Royal Level for 4 days, we were definitely treated like royalty! We not only had a private pool, but a section of the beach was roped off for us as well! We had access to private dining, room service, delicious buffets were also available. The entire staff was so accommodating! The grounds were so beautiful!! I would highly recommend this resort!! Looking forward to our next vacation at Occidental !!

    “Too many shortcomings”

We vacationed at the Occidental from April 10th to April 17th, and we were apart of the Royal Level. We traveled as a couple with a group of friends. On the surface, this resort is perfection. The grounds are clean, grand, and beautiful! But this resort lacked in the quality of the food, alcohol and entertainment, which influenced my decision to give this resort only 3 stars. ROOMS: Our Royal Level room was very nice and large; we stayed in room 19305. When we booked, we were influenced through photos to believe that our room would have a bedroom and a living/dining room/2nd balcony, but our room DID NOT have the dining room extension and we found out that only corner suites have this feature. In comparison to the basic suites that some of our friends stayed at, the size of our room was not much larger or different than theirs. The Royal Level rooms come equipped with a fully stocked mini fridge – juice, abundance of water, Presidente beer, Gatorade, and snacks (chips/granola bars/nuts), as well as a microwave and a coffee machine. There was a large television in the room, a spacious closet, and a large bathroom with a beautiful walk-in shower that had the rain head attachment as well as a removable one. The water was always hot and the pressure was pretty good. Our towels were replenished every day, except for one day early in the week when the maid didn’t come at all and we had to call for fresh towels. This wasn’t much of a burden, and since then, a maid would show up every evening with extra towels and chocolate for “turndown service”. Our king bed was very comfortable and had 4 comfy pillows. We had a solid sleep this week! One thing I found strange was that every morning around 7:30/8:00am, the maid would attempt to enter our room for what I assume was to clean it. My SO and I are usually still in our rooms waking up at that time, and we found this so be very early for a maid to come around. We were startled awake a couple of times when we chose to sleep in. I recommend sleeping with the deadbolt on the door to deter them from fully enter. The same thing would happen around 6:30pm for turndown service. We are usually showering and getting ready for the evening at this time, and the maid would fully walk into our room unannounced when the deadbolt wasn’t on. Overall, the maid service was nothing special. We tipped her 3-5 dollars every day and we never received towel art or anything extra in the room that other resorts I’ve been at always delivered on. Suffice it to say, I was disappointed in this “Royal Level” service. POOL: The main pool is huge, clean, and beautiful! It had the underwater loungers which I enjoyed tanning in while staying cool in the water, and the pool had two jetpools in the center as well. There is a pool bar as well, but it was hard to enjoy because there was a freezing cold waterfall running overhead that you need to pass through in order to take a seat and order. Because of this, not many people hung around the pool bar for too long. The waterfall also trickles into your drink upon exiting the area. There was no access to a bar from outside of the pool, unless you entered the snack bar above the pool area, but you couldn’t enter wet. The main pool is a few minute’s walk from the beach. There are 4 other pools that we saw. An activity pool which was beach front - this did not have a pool bar, but there was a walk-up bar just next to it in the beach-front lunch buffet. There was another pool in front of villa 24. The Royal Level had a round jet pool that we never used but looked clean, and the First Level members also had their own small pool. The main pool was the only one with music, in which they only ever played the same 5 instrumental songs on repeat all day long. VERY ANNOYING. I suggest bringing a personal speaker or some headphones so you can play your own tunes. The vibes around the main pool was just plain boring due to the bland music, and the lack of atmosphere at the pool bar. There was also no drink service at the pool. There was also VERY LITTLE shade, save for the palm trees and only three pergolas that were always taken. None of the pools had huts for shade, and palm tree shade is only temporary depending on the time of day. BEACH: This beach is STUNNING and was always clean! There was no seaweed for about half of the week and when there was some seaweed, it was very little. We walked the beach to other resorts, and ours was very well-maintained in comparison! The water was a little choppy, but it was VERY CLEAN! Once again, the only shade on the beach was from palm trees. There were no huts, and we struggled to find shade throughout the day. There is also NO BEACH BAR. People had to line up, single file, at the lunch buffet bar by the activity pool for drinks. There was no bar culture at this resort, no interacting, laughing, “cheers”ing, or bartender interaction at any of the bars. The long line at the lunch buffet bar was more like an assembly line and service was SLOW. The Royal Level section at the beach was good. Some friends that we vacationed with were not with the RL, so we only stayed in this section a couple of times. This is the only area of the beach that offered pergolas for shade and DID have a beach bar. Claudia was the bartender here and she literally did not speak one word the entire week. She would hear our order, and make it. No smile, no interaction. Just very cold. Magdeline also worked this bar. She was a little more interactive, but again, very cold and no smiles. This was the ONLY BAR in the resort that was stocked with PREMIUM drinks. So even though we were Royal Level, we didn’t have premium options at any other bars. DRINKS: One word - DISGUSTING. I’m a drinker. I like my booze, and I like to enjoy. Premium aside, this resort only offers a generic brand for all of their alcohol called “Winner”. It was disgusting, and it deterred me from enjoying a drink at the lobby bar in the evenings since they didn’t have any premium selections. There was not any other typical basic level alcohol available at any of their bars – NO Brugal rum, NO Absolut or Smirnoff Vodka, NO Beefeater Gin, NADA. Only “Winner” Brand. Even their mixed fruity drinks were horrible, and this resort even somehow managed to completely botch a mojito. They didn’t have any fresh mint, and would instead use “mint juice”, mixed with a bunch of sugary lemonade and a dash of soda. FOOD: NO BUENO. The food at this resort was incredibly DISAPPOINTING. The food at the buffet was the same every day at both the main buffet and the lunch buffet, and none of it was very good. It was edible, but I’ve eaten way way WAY better in Cuba. There was no bbq/grilled meats or anything. They also seemed to be serving leftover food from dinner service at the breakfast buffets the next day. We only dined at the Mexican and the Steak restaurants. Mexican was just okay, as was the Steakhouse. Our friends ordered different meals than us when we dined at these and some of them did not like their food at all. The service at these places were also very slow, and our servers were cold and lacking personality. We found ourselves mostly eating burgers, French fries, and chicken fingers every day. There is also a wood-oven pizza place open from 6pm-6am that was very good. I am NOT a picky eater at all. I love trying new food, and am always excited to enjoy the food when we vacation. The food here was a total SHAME. There was also always a long line to get into the lobby buffet, sometimes stretching the length of the lobby. With our Royal Level bracelet, we were able to bypass this line since the buffet has a special seating area for RL members. Even though there was a lineup to get in, the tables inside seemed to always be empty. LOBBY: This hotel has poor lobby culture at night. The bar seemed to close at 11pm every night and the staff would go around the tables after 10pm to begin ushering people out by removing drinks (that weren’t done) from the tables, and removing the electronic candles from outdoor tables. The service at the lobby bar was very slow, and once again, they had no premium options available, only “Winner” brand. They also served their drinks in plastic cups, even though they had glasses on display. Our Royal Level bracelet did not allow us any preferential service here. This resort also seemed to encourage smoking, as every single table both inside the lobby and outside had an ashtray on it. This resort should consider offering designated smoking areas/tables, so give nonsmokers some relief. The lobby itself is large and very nice, with an abundance of seating and couches. The bathrooms are large and clean, as are all others on this resort. ENTERTAINMENT: The entertainment on this resort is non-existent for adults. The entire week did not once feature any themed music shows or anything really entertaining. There was a magic show one night, and every other night appeared to be geared towards children (a movie night, etc). Between the lack of entertainment, and the lobby bar that quits at 11, we found solace in the late night snack area that serves pizza, burgers, fries, and drinks (albeit, Winner brand), that everyone seemed to trickle into after the lobby shut down. The line-up to get any of these items was VERY long, even at 2am, and the pizza chef was VERY SLOW, working at a snail’s pace, but made some really good pizza! OVERALL: based on what I’ve detailed above, I WOULD NOT recommend this resort, and I obviously would not return. I was shocked at the lack of quality food and drink at this resort, in Punta Cana of all places. For the price that we spent to stay here (~2K), this was not at all worth it. If you’re still looking into a resort, I would recommend the Gran Bahia Principe Ambar, Barcelo Bavaro Beach, or the Magestic Elegance instead.

    “Definitively not a 5* hotel. More like a 4*.....”

I went to the Occidental Punta Cana with 30 others person begining of april. The site itself is beautiful. The ground are well maintained. All the pools are too warm, it's not refreshing at all. The Bavaro Beach is nice. The drinks were not always good. They did not have the blender at the pool bar so they could not make Pina Colada and other slushy drinks. All their drink are make with rum and syrup..... The barman/barmaid are slow unless you show them some money. And they dont smile at you. The concierge in our building wanted us to go at a meeting. I told him I would go but not my wife. He was adamant that my wife needed to go because he wont get his points if she was not coming. We told him to forget that and never get a good service after that. He was ignoring us. The room was OK. The details in the room were not at the standard of a 5*. Alarm clock rusted and not working, Cleaning staff made the room but did not put new towels and when out of toilet paper, did not replace it... Had to go get it by myself. Frame missing on a wall....... I wanted to use the comb in the washroom. There is a basket with soap, shampoo, comb ect.... The comb had pubic hair on it. Definitively not mine, they were black and I'm a ginger......... Wifi is good and fast. The food at the buffet was ok. Line up for every meal at the buffet. Waited more than 45 min at the Mexican restaurant to finally go to the buffet. A La Carte restaurant always full. No pool service. No matter which pool you are, you'll have to get up and go get your drinks. The good music in the lobby bar stopped at 9pm, after that it`s like elevator music. Not a good mood to have a drink. Staff did not seem to like their jobs. They see you waiting for something and taked their time before helping you. You show them that you have money (tips) and they will help you faster but still not smilling or happy to do so. As a travel agent, I would not recommend that hotel to my clients.

    “Disappointing Stay”

I have been to several all inclusive resorts in the past and I don’t require much. I’m honestly not one of those people who focuses on all the negatives, but this place has too many to overlook. I have been reading a lot of mixed reviews about this place and I wished I listened and booked elsewhere. We booked though Expedia and the check in process is very odd. You’re required to go check in a different area, not the front desk. Which was ok, but they were kind of short with me and never showed us where anything was. It was not until the last day that we found the night club which was all the way almost outside of the resort. They brought us into our building. The resort is a series of buildings, we stayed in building 12 which was a nice location; in the middle of everything. The room is decent but the furniture looks like it took some beating and it overall looks updated but dirty and like it needs an updating again. The service is absolutely awful. I have no words. Half the time no one seats you down at the buffet and waiters pass by you with coffee or water and unless you flag them down you get nothing. Several times, we ordered a beer or wine and never even got it. You have to keep asking and begging and reminding them to get you stuff. The tables are never set up completely and we had to keep getting our own coffee cups and silverware. The buffet food was just plain out awful. I really am not a picky person but there was barely anything to pick from, at times food was cold and even sat there from lunch to dinner. I feel as that the resort is very stingy with staffing and if there was more staff available the service would have been better. The bars are over crowded and hard to get service. Half of them have an attitude, except for the crew at the pool bar: santos and the sweet woman who were excellent and very attentive. I appreciated their smiling faces. We ate at some of the speciality restaurants which you needed to make reservations for. Again, slow service and the food was just meh. At the sea food restaurant, we literally got up and left after being ignored for half an hour sitting at the table. No one even served us water. Pizza restaurant staff were beyond rude and it took over an hour to get a pizza I didn’t even order. Our tv and hair dryer did not work and it took me asking and calling four separate people to get it fixed. On the positive side, the pool area and the beaches are very nice. And I would like to acknowledge Mr. Soel who makes the crepes in the main buffet. He was very sweet, humble and his service was excellent. Overall, a very mediocre place. It’s very crowded, the buffet lines are insane. I highly recommend spending a little extra money and booking elsewhere. All they are concerned about is to sell you their timeshare, take your money and not give you anything in return. We will not be returning here.
