Excursion to the Picos de Europa and Lakes of Covadonga from Oviedo

Thanks to the Reconquista Route, we will reach the Sanctuary of Covadonga, the site of the famous Battle of Don Pelayo. Here, we will have time to see the holy cave, a natural spring that runs through the entire Covadonga Mountains and magically gave rise to this religious site. We will give you some time to rest and see the Basilica, and we will show you the best places to relax.

The Lakes of Covadonga, Enol, and Ercina make up one of the most famous and most visited sites within the Picos de Europa National Park. The Lakes are a place steeped in history, allowing us to learn about Gamoneu cheese, the traditional use of pastures, and the rugged landscapes shaped by the ice.

The Lakes of Covadonga are within the Picos de Europa National Park. From here, you can admire the peaks, which rise over 2,500 meters; a unique and special place that will give you a glimpse into the wildness of this land. We’ll climb the road along the Vuelta Ciclista a España route, and you’ll be able to see the impressive landscape shaped by nature and pastoral activity over hundreds of years.

Before our return to Oviedo, we’ll reach Cangas de Onís thanks to the Camino a Covadonga Route, an itinerary that encompasses the history of our emigrated Indians, devotees, and the passion of Asturians returning to their homeland. We’ll take advantage of the opportunity to eat and marvel at the Sella River and its pools, the Roman Bridge of Cangas de Onís, and discover the “canga” (a kind of “canga”).

  • It is open to all those who are able to walk normally, regardless of their physical fitness, as the park’s walking areas are very comfortable. We recommend athletic shoes, a backpack with water, a sun hat, and a coat depending on the season.
