Meeting point: Plaza de España
Duration: Approximately two hours
The tour:
The guided tour begins in front of Avilés Town Hall and continues into the historic center along Calle de la Ferrería, where we will learn about the origins of Avilés and its medieval charter. We will also see the Franciscan Fathers’ Church and the Palacio de Valdecarzana from the outside.
Next, we will head to Sabugo, the old fishing district, to visit the Old Church of Sabugo, the neighborhood’s medieval parish, and the New Church of Sabugo, its current parish.
We will enter Plaza de Los Hermanos Orbón, home to the weekly market, built in the 19th century as a connection between the town center and Sabugo.
The tour continues along Calle de la Fruta, a street dating back to medieval Avilés but significantly transformed over the centuries. At the end of this street stands the Palacio de Camposagrado, one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in Asturias, which still preserves a section of the medieval wall.
Back at Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the heart of Avilés’ Baroque expansion, we will discuss the town’s 17th-century development outside the old walls and the palatial buildings constructed around the square.
The tour concludes at Calle de Galiana, the old cattle route into the center of Avilés.
