The tour:
On this historic tour, we will explore the center of Avilés, known as “Medieval Avilés,” and Sabugo, the old fishermen’s quarter. This is the only regular tour that includes access to Las Alas Chapel, a proto-Gothic funerary gem and a symbol of Avilés’ medieval splendor.
The tour begins at the Fuente de los Caños de San Francisco, leading into streets that were once walled centuries ago. You’ll learn about the importance of Avilés’ port and admire iconic buildings such as Valdecarzana Palace, the Church of the Franciscan Fathers, and Camposagrado Palace.
We will continue to Sabugo, the historic fishermen’s quarter. For centuries, Sabugo was separated from walled Avilés by a large marsh, now home to Muelle Park. Here we will explore the history of the only suburb outside the medieval walls, its streets, and its two churches.
The tour returns to Town Hall Square, where we will discuss the Baroque expansion and some of the key 17th-century buildings, including the Town Hall, Ferrera Palace, and ending on the arcaded Calle Galiana.
