    “The ups and Downs”

On the last day of our holiday, my family sat down in the restaurant and we went round in a circle discussing the ups and downs of the vacation. UPS: - The buffet food in the restaurant is very nice, with a large salad bar and a children's section for the youngsters who prefer a more plain meal. There seemed to be an unexaggerated theme of food every evening so each night wasn't the same cuisine. - The staff were mostly helpful and polite; if a member of staff walked by they would usually say 'hello' or 'good morning/afternoon'. - The pool area was clean and aesthetically pleasing. The water was clear and the animation team conducted water sports and daily activities like yoga, water polo, aerobics... - the animation team were amazing! Not only do they look after the children all day, but (as I said in the last point), they conduct activities both in and out of the water, they do a disco in the evening for the children before the main entertainment, they are always energetic and friendly; even when they're not working (mealtimes). They do a sort of dance show one night a week that was my personal favourite entertainment out of the whole week. It's definitely worth watching! - The beds were comfy and well sized. The body washes and shampoo were of good quality. - The shower was good and easy to manage (very important to me!) - The destination of the hotel was very good. There were a few supermarkets very nearby that were always open when we went (though most shops are closed on Sundays). To get to the beach all you had to do was go out the back of the hotel and cross the road; it's not even a five minute walk to the ocean if the tide is in. It took about an hour to get from Faro airport to the hotel. DOWNS: -The pool water was so cold it refrained me going swimming the whole week. This could be considered a good thing if you spent the whole day out and you were boiling hot; but for me it was just too cold. - There will be no spare beach beds if you arrive at the pool in the afternoon. The hotel has signs around the seating areas to say that reserving seats is not allowed, but by 10am there are barely any seats left. Even worse, only 1/10 of the seats seem to be used when you get to the pool. So many chairs have towels over them but no one sitting or lying on them. One day we went to the pool at midday-ish and we had to gather the only two spare chairs left in the entire resort. There were no umbrellas which caused us to get overheated and a little sunburned. - No matter what meal it was, the restaurant was very loud unless you ate as soon as the restaurant opens or close to when it closes. - Something we found weird was the opening times for the restaurant. Breakfast and linch was ok but dinner didn't start until 8pm which for us (Brits) was kind of odd to be eating dinner so late. Also if you have young children, they will probably be very hungry by the time the buffet opens. - The seats in the restaurant were made of fabric and wood, the fabric areas were stained and didnt look very clean. Almost every chair was stained or discoloured in a way. - When we booked our room, we specifically asked for a quiet room as we are usually placed next to young children who cry through the night. (The youngest member in our family is nine). Three times a night there is live music on the terrace where we were placed just above. The music started at ten and didn't end until midnight. Unfortunately we arrived on a Thursday where there was live entertainment and we couldn't get to sleep until midnight. Even after midnight, there was a loud ruckus of people walking back to their rooms. When we went to talk to the staff about the noise, they wouldn't move us because they said you could hear the music from all around the hotel. - Our party consisted of two parents, a 17 year old son, a 15 year old daughter and a nine year old daughter. We payed an extra €90 every night to get the biggest room available in to hotel instead of getting two separate rooms, but it wasn't worth the extra cost. The oldest child had to sleep on the sofa and the girls had to share a room (which they were used to so that wasn't much of a problem). What was a problem though, was that we only had one bathroom between the five of us! Two adults, two teenagers and one child sharing ONE toilet and one shower for a whole week was almost disastrous. The bathroom was small and didn't have a lock. We also found a black hair in the bathroom that wasn't any of ours, it was there before we arrived and was never cleaned away. - There was no coffee or tea in the room though we did have a kettle. We called reception asking to have some brought up but we only got two classic tea bags and two instant coffee sachets along with a few sugars. They didn't get topped up during the holiday. - Something we found odd was that some of the staff didnt speak Spanish. The hotel was populated with both Spanish and English guests. I would say that 50% of the visitors were English yet some of the staff (mostly working in the restaurant and as lifeguards) didn't understand if we asked for a bottle of water and other things. Overall, my family and I enjoyed our vacation to Barceló Isla Canela and we might go back, but it wasn't the best hotel we've visited.

    “Brilliant relaxing break”

Me and my family stayed at the Barcelo Isla Canela for 7 days between the 6th and the 13th of August 2017, and had a wonderful family break in the sun. We booked the hotel with First Choice (or TUI), and went with the “All Inclusive” package. The hotel has been recently renovated to a very high standard, with all aspects of the hotel featuring a fresh, modern décor. The gardens and the fountains were always very well kept, and helped make the Barcelo a very attractive place to stay…also a good spot to take photos! Check in was quick and straightforward. We were delighted that reception acted on our request to have the two rooms next to one another…something we asked in an email prior to our stay. As well as that, we were given lots of useful information about our stay, such as when meals were served in the buffet restaurant, dress code...However, we thought that the all inclusive was unnecessarily confusing, and sometimes a little restrictive. I got the impression that the all inclusive varied based upon who you booked the holiday with. We were given a sheet from Thomson, saying that our all inclusive allowed us to order anything on the snack bar menu between 10:30am to 1:30pm, and 4:00pm to 8:00pm. But, when we tried to order a sandwich at 5:30pm, we got turned away by the bar staff, stating that the kitchen was closed. Though despite this, we thought all the drinks on offer were really good. I especially enjoyed trying each of the “cocktail of the day” throughout the week. The rooms that we stayed in were great. Both 1040 and 1041 were good sized, and contained loads of storage. Like the rest of the hotel, the rooms were modern, and very well maintained. As well as that, they were well equipped with a mini fridge, TV, safe and air conditioning. The beds in the room were so comfy, and combined with the big plump pillows meant I slept really well. The bathrooms like the room were very modern, with me especially liking the powerful rainfall showers. Throughout our stay, the rooms (as with the rest of the hotel) was kept spotless by the cleaners, and the bath towels replenished every day. The food was excellent. In the buffet restaurant at all meal times there was always so much to choose from, with everything being cooked perfectly, and so delicious. Please send my compliments to the chefs. At dinner though there isn’t any outside seating, which we found a little disappointing, as we enjoy alfresco eating when going abroad. Though on a couple of occasions we paid to go to the outside grill, which was set up at the snack bar. The steaks we had were amazing, and a violinist playing created a calm ambience. We found the atmosphere at the grill better than the buffet restaurant, which at its busiest times was loud, and very crowded…especially in the areas where you pick the food. All the staff at the Barcelo Isla Canela were all very friendly, and helpful. The cleaners were always very happy to come and do our rooms later if we were still in bed, and in the restaurant, our tables were quickly cleared of any plates that we were finished with. Though on occasions, in the buffet restaurant and lounge bar, we would have to wait a little while for someone to come and take our drinks order. The animation team were very energetic and fun. Throughout the day, there would be a number of different activities going on to suit all ages. On the Saturday they put up a giant inflatable waterslide, which I thought was great! The evening entertainment was also excellent. My favourite being on the days where there was a live band outside on the terrace, creating a lively atmosphere. The Barcelo Isla Canela has a number of great facilities on offer. In the lounge bar there is a pool table, dart board and air hockey table. There is also a spa, gym, salon, shop and 3 pools (the main pool, children’s pool and indoor pool…though be aware, the outside pool can be freezing in the morning)! Around the pool there were plenty of sunbeds and parasols to go around. The hotel has a strict “no reservation of sunbeds” rule, which to my surprise is something that the guests abided by. This meant that the 5 of us were able to go down to the pool a 11:00am, and still get 5 sunbeds. This is something I’ve never seen before! A couple of times, I saw some members of staff going round the pool area and handing guests some melon, which I thought was a great touch, and a representation of how the hotel wants to care for all its guests. Just outside the security gates of the Barcelo is the small, and very bustling resort of Isla Canela. Just a stones throw from the hotel is a massive, golden sand beach. In addition, there are a number of bars and restaurants along the promenade. The road that lies adjacent to the hotel is also really quiet...you wouldn’t know it was there. On the whole, I would defiantly recommend and would return again to the Barcelo Isla Canela. I would also like to thank the team at the Barcelo Isla Canela for a truly relaxing and amazing holiday.
