“Our 6th stay at this resort.”

Last year I posted a review titled "Our 5th Stay at this resort". In that review I gave the resort a 3 star rating. In the past I had rated it 5 and 4 stars. I had hoped to leave a stronger rating this time, but sad to say I cannot. I will say this, they did make improvements to the areas that were lacking last year. I mentioned them in my review, management said they would work on them, and they did. I give them credit for fixing those issues. The buffet was cleaner, the pool waterfall was working, and most importantly the pool sanitation was great! Crystal clear water. The biggest issues with the Barcelo now are the food, casino, and bingo. The menus have recently changed at the restaurants. While the Mexican has shown some improvement, the Italian, which for years was by far the best, has taken a turn for the worse. They have removed most of the traditional italian dishes from the menu. It is now mainly a seafood menu, with some beef. The beef offered is not good. We would eat here on two occasions per trip. This time we walked out. Please bring back the older menu with items like Chicken Parm, Lasagna, and traditional pasta with meat sauce. We spoke with numerous guests at the pool, and everyone said exactly the same thing. The new casino seem like an after thought. Very small, and very smokey. The Occidental casino was much larger in size, and I was always amazed how it never felt smokey. Investing in some smoke eaters would help. They could also use a larger gaming tables area. Many nights people were standing and hovering waiting to get a seat at the tables. I recommend walking next door to the Hyatt casino. I feel it is one of the best casinos in the high rise area of Aruba. Bingo. Why was Bingo moved to the beach? Every other hotel in Aruba still does it by the pool. No one plays at the beach. I asked several of the bartenders at the pool bar and they all agreed it needs to be moved back to the pool. Many other reviews here on TripAdvisor say the same thing. Reason I was given was that guests were complaining from the noise it made by the pool. I find this hard to believe. From noon on they blast music and play games by the pool. This is all much louder then Bingo. Shame it was moved. Poor decision making on management part. All that said, we still had a great time in Aruba. Belinda was very helpful at getting us a comfortable room to stay in. We thank her for working with us. Location of this hotel cannot be beat. It is a prefect sized resort unlike some of the other monster sized resorts found in Aruba. We are on the fence if we will come back to Barcelo. After 6 trips we may try and change it up next time. However, if they are able to make changes to the mentioned areas we would return for sure. We ate dinner off resort every night but one. There are just too many good places in Aruba to eat. Barcelo is all inclusive so if you are paying a lot for your week then I would stay and take advantage of it. However, if you get a good deal I would go off campus to eat.

Dear rmclain73, At Barceló we strongly believe that there is always room for improvement and your comments will assist our team in their continuous efforts aimed at meeting our guests' expectations, therefore we greatly appreciate the time you took out of your day to share your constructive critics. While we wish you would have enjoyed our new menus, we find it unfortunate that the quality of our menus were not up to your expectations and can assure you that your comments will be passed on to our Executive Chef for revision. We have taken good note of your comment regarding the casino and regret your disappointment since we always strive to provide our guests with a varied assortment of activities throughout the day and evening, and therefore have expanded our lobby lounge for more nightly entertainment for all of our guests. Thank you for pointing out your observations, these will be discussed with our team as they provide suggestions on areas of improvement. Again, we genuinely appreciate the time you took out of your day to inform us of the inadequacies you experienced during your stay and we sincerely hope that you will allow us another opportunity to demonstrate our true level of hospitality and interest in serving you properly in the future. The information you have provided will be used accordingly to enhance our future guests' experiences among us and we hope you will visit us again in the future. “Royal Club worth the Extra $$”

Wow, we had a great time at this resort! We had to extend our trip by 5 days due to hurricane Irma and didn't bother looking at moving. They were even willing to help us out a little bit. Now lets get into the details. Royal Club - This was definitely worth the extra money. The pool bar is fun, but it gets crowded and the bartenders there are inconsistent. The Royal Club beach bar, however, was always a great place to hang out. Never too crowded, top shelf liquor, and awesome bartenders. Gilmer and Jermin were the best bartenders I've had at any resort. Being in Royal Club also gives you special access to the First Club lounge with snacks and private bar, a concierge desk up on the 9th floor filled with helpful people, and the royal club restaurant with delicious food and great service. Secret tip, make sure to reserve a lobster tail to go with your dinner if you eat here. Restaurants - Arubian, Japanese, Mexican, Italian, and Royal Club - I don't remember eating a bad thing at any of them. Our favorites though, were the Italian, Royal Club, and Japanese (in that order). The menus are put together well, but if you want to substitute any part of the meal, they will do it for you. Our meals ranged from 1h15 to 2h, so don't schedule anything to soon after your reservations. There is also the buffet that is open for all meals, and the beach club which is a smaller buffet right off the beach, open for breakfast and lunch. Casino - Very small and not crowded. If you like slots, blackjack, or roulette, then you'll be fine here. If you want a larger place to go with more games and more people, the Hyatt right next door has a decent size casino you can walk to. There is also a full casino on the island, Alhambra, you can get a taxi to. Water Sports - This resort doesn't include much in regards to water sports. There are places all throughout the beach where you can book excursions and tours, but at an extra cost of course. Pool - Very nice spot to hang out during the day. Palm trees throughout, iguanas, waterfalls all make this pool very nice. We walked up and down the beach and many of the resorts just have a large pool surrounded by beach chairs, kind of like a public pool. Not the Barcelo though. The whole pool area gives you the same tropical feel as being on the beach. Overall, I was very happy staying here. The people are friendly, the island is beautiful, and there is plenty to do if you want to get out of the resort for part of the day. And if you get Royal Club, go hang out with Gilmer and Jermin at the beach bar, you won't regret it.

Overall o.k. resort with very friendly staff. We belong to First Club and didn't think the First Club facility was on par with other First Club facilities we've experienced. All inclusive restaurants could use an upgrade. Food at these restaurants was not that good. Buffet restaurant was much better.
