“Good place to stay for my final two nights in Central America”

I stayed here for two nights in early January, after a month of backpacking around Nicaragua, right before flying home from Liberia. I got 60% off the price of a deluxe ocean view room (room #605) on Expedia a week before I stayed here. It was, for the most part, everything I had hoped for when I made my reservation -- a place with a great room, with a great view to the ocean, and really good food and a nice pool, and a pretty good beach (though the most "crowded" beach I've ever visited in Central America, and I've been to over 20 beaches, mostly in Costa Rica, it still had plenty of space to spread out, but it wasn't exactly tranquil like some other beaches I visited that were virtually deserted). My room was top-notch in every way. The all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant had good breakfast and lunch food -- only the French toast was lackluster, of what I ate. I was satisfied by what was on offer, but I've never been at an all-inclusive before, so some people who are used to gigantic buffets may be disappointed. I got plenty filled up on pretty good, tasty food. I ate dinner both night in "The Grill" restaurant, next to the pool area, and had steak dinners both nights. Both steaks I ate were delicious, some of the best steaks I've eaten in years. All of the food was very good in my dinners. The seafood broth was perfect in every way! Desserts were might good, too. The pool is large and clean. I think a second pool, perhaps near the beach entrance, that was dedicated to all of the various water games they had (e.g. volleyball) at different times would be a good idea, as during game times the pool area wasn't exactly tranquil. I just went to the beach during those times and swam in the warm water, and enjoyed the scenery. The staff were all very friendly and completely helpful in every way. They were top notch, every single one of them. The drinks seemed a bit weak, but I just had to drink extra drinks. Great AC in my room. Satellite TV had many stations in English! My balcony area had lounge chairs and a drying rack, and a beautiful view. I didn't really hang out in the disco bar and lounge bar at night, after 9:30 PM, as I was getting up at 6 AM everyday, and by 9:30 PM I was very full from dinner and ready to relax a bit in my room before sleeping. As a solo traveler in a resort where nearly everyone else was part of a couple, a family (all kids appeared at least 18 years old), or a large group, I still had a good time. More than one staff member asked if I was a pilot! I guess they must get some pilots staying there at times? While I usually am a backpacker, and all-inclusive resorts aren't my usual "thing," I highly enjoyed my final 2 days/nights of my month-long trek around Nicaragua and Costa Rica at this place. I didn't leave the property, my goal was simply to relax, swim, eat, drink, read, and sleep, and it was a great spot for those things. (I didn't take part in any of the tours, spa services, gym, nothing like that -- just pool time, beach time, room time, food time, drink time, bed time!).

    “Death is in the details”

My wife and I are taking winter vacations for 14 years, and this is the first time that she said I want go back next January! We stayed between January 11th and 18th, 2017; weather was absolutely perfect. Hotel was truly tailored for adults only. In the lobby and restaurant background music was progressive jazz. At the pool '70, 80' with a reggae beat. Not to loud and no to quiet. Rooms, pool and common areas were extremely clean and well kept. We are coming back next year, but this time we are staying 10 days.

    “Not what we were expectiong”

As occidental members, we were disapointed that there was nothing extra for members. We also didnt like there there wasnt free shuttlels to airport or even to playa hermosa or playa coco. Going to the beach and having to drag your chair around was not pleasent either. We definately will not be returning to this resort. It was too quiet for us, and found ourselves leaving and spending $ eating and drinking in town.

    “Third trip to this hotel”

This was our third trip to the Occidental Grand Papagayo. We are Royal Club members and this is our home resort. Unfortunately, this may be our last trip to this resort. The new management has really taken the hotel a step back. Don't get me wrong, we do love the staff in the resort....bartenders, wait staff, and the cleaning crew are all wonderful. Here in lies the problems: 1. No transportation provided to and from the airport....we were verbally promised that as being a perk of being " an owner" when we bought into the club. When I called to arrange transportation, I was told that because they don't have a sales office, they no longer provide transportation....Well, upon arrival, lot and behold, I do see that there is a sales office on property. Seems like such a little perk to provide. 2. This is an adults only resort....but there was NOT nightly entertainment. I think there was only entertainment for a few hours a couple of nights....a keyboard player. Last time we were there, they also had music, but they also had dance lessons, karaoke...more fun, for sure. 3. We are supposed to be able to enjoy dinner in the restaurant nightly....Apparently, management really doesn't want to allow you to have a dining experience each night, so that you show up with your whole group only to find that they don't have a reservation for you....I recommend that when making your reservation, ask for a printed copy of the reservation, because even if they have empty tables, you will be turned away....they do not accommodate. The hosts taking the reservations will tell you that you don't need that, but I insisted anyway, because there is no one upstairs to help you in the evening. The buffet restaurant is ok, but the sit down dinners are amazing.... This hotel, while nice, has come down a few notches since being bought out by Barcelona.

“One of the best vacations ever”

This place is beautiful. Very large. Friendly accommodating staff. 4 restaurants. All excellent. Quite a variety of food and I'm a foodaholic (I've been on Foodtv.com and my son is a chef) so I know good food. This food was excellent. Quite a variety. Chef Douglas is very, very nice. He supervises a very talented staff of chefs, sous chefs, etc. By the third day, entire staff knew my name and what I liked to drink. Drink was on the table as fast as I could sit down. We loved the Oriental restaurant, the buffet was very large, plenty of good, healthy food, an excellent Italian restaurant, a grille with all kinds of meats. There are approximately 70 steps from the hotel lobby to the pool (very nice and large), and there are carts to help if you have difficulty walking. My friend and I had massages (2) on the beach and they were the best at a very low price. They offer several side trips, we took 4, and all were excellent. Prices were very good. I cannot get over the very nice people we met and the staff...all were excellent. I would like to mention Chef Douglas, Manuel Torres, Marlon Vollejos, Carlos Anderson, EFran and many others. The beach is a little walk from the pool, but there are plenty of chairs, under old beautiful trees, so there is plenty of shade. There is a disco with plenty of entertainment. I can't say enough about this place, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.
