    “Occidental Papagayo Review”

    My husband and I stayed at the Occidental Papagayo - Adults only as part of our honeymoon in Costa Rica. We stayed in June (beginning of rainy season) and would highly recommend this time to others. The weather was decent, it rained about 60% of the days in the afternoon/evening for an hour or two at a time. The reason rainy season would be best is that the hotel has a smaller pool and buffet area. The two a la cart restaurants are also very hard to get into without the hotel being full. The food is amazing at the buffet with only a few less than exceptional items. We only were able to get into the Oriental restaurant and were not very pleased with the food there. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming throughout the entire resort. The drinks are very tasty. We did find that the servers around the pool did not come by very often though. The beach is very nice however you do need to be careful. The ocean was full of jelly fish and we were repeatedly stung. There are also lots of rocks so water shoes are recommended. During high tide most of the beach does disappear. The beach is also open to the public and locals bring their kids and dogs - meaning this area is not really adults only. The Wi-Fi is great in the rooms but a bit spotty around the pool, lobby, bar and restaurant. There is no Wi-Fi by the ocean. They have carts to drive you around if needed however the whole area of the resort is not very big so we did not need to use this service. The spa is fantastic. My husband said his massage was one of the best he has ever received. I had a body wrap and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. Definitely recommend a spa treatment during your stay! The gym is adequate with a few bikes, treadmills, an elliptical and a few machines. Not much for free weights. Our room was nice, though nothing special. The bed was comfortable. A tip one staff member told us was to keep your second room key in the little panel at all times to keep the room cold. Otherwise the power in your room shuts off. One rather odd thing about the hotel is they do not allow tour busses to come up to the lobby area for pick ups/drop offs. So if you are doing a tour you need to walk down past security and wait along the road. Not sure the reason for this but I have never experienced this at a hotel before. They also had us cut off our bracelets when we left and hand them in, perhaps worried people would try to come back or give the bracelets to someone else?

    “Could've been a lot better”

    The guest services and check in was horrible. The day of our arrival, we tried to do an upgrade as per an email offer I had received. The website for MyBarcelo was not working and I showed 3 different people, and no one wanted to help. Their only response was "I don't know" until a nice lady, I believe her name was Monica, came and assisted us. On our second day, we encountered an inconvenience at the Snack Bar. My sister in law and I were both wearing dresses. We had already been sitting down because we were playing Bingo, conducted by Jeohavanny. We started to get hungry, and decided to go up to grab some snacks. With plate in hand, Roberto came and told us we couldn't eat because we were not wearing shorts. I've been to a couple of Barcelos in different locations and know that when you're wet or not wearing proper clothing, you cannot go in the restaraunts. However, our dresses were long, it covered everything and there was no need for shorts. Roberto made us return the food we had on our plate. That same day, at night, our key stopped working. It was not being read by the door key. We contacted guest services and they sent a technician. We had been outside for about an hour waiting. The problem was not resolved the same day. The technician told us that we needed to go to reception the next day in the morning and request for them to send someone again to fix it. The next day we woke up early to request the key to be fixed and meanwhile we went to the pool to relax before check out. We went to our room hoping the key had been fixed and nothing. We had to walk all the way back to reception to request the master key, which took us about an hour because no one wanted to assist us. This caused us to be a few minutes late to our check out process and caused a delay in our activities for that day. When I travel, I always try to stay in Barcelo locations, but honestly this experience is making me want to switch to another brand of hotels. I went on this trip with two other of my friends and their boyfriends because I strongly recommended Barcelo to them, but never again.

    “Four star resort struggling to be a five”

    The resort is beautiful, the rooms are well appointed, the staff are very good over all and any issues are resolved fairly quickly. This is not a Sandals but still very well run I have not stayed at a five star resort where the guests have to drag a lounger 30 yards to the beach, which is on the small side but still very nice. I did not stay in the premium section so I am not sure if it is worth the upgrade.The resort is fairly isolated so if you want to do something you will have to book an excursion,rent a car which is located in the lobby or pay 12 US return for the shuttle into nearby Coco which really hasnt much to offer. The food is very good and plentiful,The WIFI is pretty good throughout the resort,Its a couples resort and not a great place for solo travelers unless you are seeking solitude.Costa Rica is a beautiful country and its people are wonderful,enjoy

    “Pura Vida”

    I do not Have enough words to describe how wonderful and relaxing was my trip. Occidental Papagayo is a beautiful and peaceful property with amazing views and wildlife. The Buffet was delicious and varied everyday, the room was always neat, clean and the gardens always shimmering, but the best of everything is the Staff!!. The entire Staff is very friendly, always smiling, very kind,professional and always willing to help you in anything you need. You can not leave without meeting My Ticos!!, Fabio, Alex, Antonio, Wilmer, Marvin, Edwin, Anner, Yahaira, Dabid, Harold, Mauricio,Elsie,Lissette, Kathy, Enzo and Michael. You Rock Guys!!.Thank You for being so kind to me, You all taught me so much in so many ways. I Thank God for placing beautiful Human beings in my company while on this mini vacation. Each of You have a part of my Heart and I can not wait to return!!.:)

    “Excellent”

    Our first time in this beautiful resort, at Costa Rica. From check-in to check-out, it was great!! The food was delicious all time even the snack was very good. Drinks were amazing!!! We tried the Italian and Oriental speciality restaurants which were both really good. But the best was the staff! At all the times, they were very kind and helpful. Great Experience!!! Can't wait to came back.
