Barceló Maya Palace reviewed by profalex on . Great property, but a long way from airport This is place is gorgeous and HUGE. It wasn't clear when I made the reservation there were five separate hotels in the complex. Pay attention to the dress code in the alacarte restaurants; I didn't... Rating: 5

    “Great week away!”

Great spot for families. There were 9 of us who met for a week together including three kids under the age of 9. There was truly something for everyone. Make your dinner reservations early as some places are hard to get a spot especially for larger groups. We loved the Maya Mall to stop in for a drinks, wonder around the market. there's loads to do including aqua size and it was loads of fun and a good workout.

    “Our happy place”

This was our 3rd trip to the Maya Palace, and we loved it even more than before! We were a group of 10 this time around, and the staff were amazing at accommodating us at the buffets and restaurants. We also upgraded to the Premium Pool View room, and we all agree that it's worth it! We loved that we could "walk out" to the pool, which made everything so much more convenient. This is by far the best option for families of 5 (as we are) and we love it so much, we're booked to come back in July. Can't wait!

    “Perfect family vacation!”

We just returned from a full week at the Barcelo Maya Palace. We originally booked our trip through Southwest Vacations and expected to stay at the Maya Beach or Maya Caribe (there are a total of 5 hotels within the Barcelo Maya resort area). Upon arrival at Beach, we were redirected to the Palace. I'm not sure why we were moved but I got the sense it was an upgrade so we didn't complain. Our family of 4 (2 kids, ages 10 and 9) had an incredible week. The room was very comfortable and clean, with 2 couches that housekeeping made up as beds for our boys. The resort is huge - be prepared to do a lot of walking. All of the staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Everything is clean and well-kept: we saw landscapers and other staff working every day to keep things looking great. We LOVED the beach area - the sand is clean, chairs were always available throughout the day, and most importantly the water is beautiful and perfect for wading, swimming and snorkeling. Although you can rent snorkels for free, we will be buying our own for our next trip for the convenience of not having to rent them each day (it's a bit of a walk from the Palace to the dive/snorkel shop). We also enjoyed taking advantage of all of the non-motorized water sports included in our room rate - the catamaran, water trike and kayaks were a big hit with our boys. Food was ample and delicious - we ate at the buffets every day and appreciated the variety of food (a rotating menu each day). We also checked out the dolphin show (included) and the surf lessons (a reasonable $15/hour). Another recent reviewer referenced a "cruise ship" atmosphere and we agree with that: near the Palace pool there are activities from 12 - 4ish every day, including Zumba, pool aerobics, bingo, cooking demonstrations, etc. It's fun and provided a ton of great activities for us to do in addition to the beach (but the music can be a little loud at times). Every one of the 5 hotels has beautiful swimming pools, including kids pools, with ample lounge chairs (and hammocks!) available. Tipping: we brought $200USD in pesos to use as tips (primarily housekeeping and servers in the restaurants) and it was plenty for our 5 day trip. Our only complaint is the lack of free wifi but frankly we were out enjoying all the activities so much that we hardly missed it. Overall we really loved our stay at the Barcelo and would highly recommend it, especially for families. We can't wait to go back!

    “It was okay”

I expected more for the money, the food was so so, the resort huge, premium level left much to be expected in regards to liquor choice, beach was amazing, sound system too loud at theater at night, check in took way too long, trying to get reservations for large groups at restaurants impossible, French restaurant was best, Coral buffet restaurant sucked, the biggest buffet but food quality left lots to desire, bartenders weren't happy, tipping did little to change their attitudes, not enough servers to bring drinks at pool/beach, room service takes a long time, nice rooms, great beach, wish people couldn't reserve sun loungers, but numerous good spots, sucks that smokers light up near kids areas/pools, great for kids, dolphins and cenote experience great, lots of activities, just sucked that it was the coldest in Mexico ever so a heated pool would've been nice but totally get why it's unlikely to happen
