Barceló Maya Palace reviewed by Laura S on . Very large resort and kid friendly, but not crowded. Great place! Everything was as expected, via the website. I was surprised that "all-inclusive" really only meant your meals/drinks were paid for. It seemed that any little thing we did still required more... Rating: 5

    “Amazing Get-a-Way”

The grounds are gorgeous, the food is exceptional, and the staff go out of their way to make sure you are happy. We loved every moment at the Barcelo Maya Palace and can't wait to come back next year! Make sure you tip the staff. A few dollars for each and EVERY person who helped us out went a really long way. I have Celiac Disease and didn't get glutened ONCE (this is huge). The staff was extremely informative and knew what I could and could not eat and even made me a few special gluten free plates. We also really enjoyed all access to the premium lounge. This made check-in, check-out, making reservations, and grabbing a quick drink or bite to eat SUPER EASY (five minutes or less with zero lines). Access to this lounge as well as the top shelf alcohol made it worth every penny. The lounge also has exceptional food and a wait staff. Another perk of premium access was the free 24/7 room service. The menu was limited HOWEVER, at 1am the beautiful fruit plate and club sandwich really hit the spot. Counting down the days until our 2018 trip! See you next year Barcelo Maya Palace!

“Always wonderful, and some suggestions for management”

This is out 6th visit to the Palace as a multi-generational family with seniors and small children. As always, it was wonderful, and the things which encourage us to continue returning are still there: the lovely sea view and walks, the excellent food, and the children’s facilities. It’s a wonderful resort and we have high standards – you just can’t go wrong if you are looking for a high quality mega-resort experience with great food. There haven’t been a lot of big changes this year, but we did want to note two positive things which we noticed. One is that the earlier open buffet rotates this year (a suggestion I had made last year so us early eaters with kids could eat at the Mexican side sometimes), so thanks, Barcelo! The other change we noted was improved service at the restaurants – all excellent and especially improved at the buffets. Also noted is that continued flexible policies of the kids club welcoming parents with younger kids --- this is in contrast to other resorts and it’s really nice for our 3 year old! We liked the new raptors – super cool raptor program to keep pests down – loved the idea and it was neat to see them working. They have worked well enough to remove the netting from the buffet balconies which is excellent! I’d like to acknowledge Cayetano at the buffet for breakfast. He was the best waiter we have ever had! I always make several suggestions to management and will of course do so this year again, and it is always appreciated how many of them are implemented. They recognize that returning families like us care to make things as good as possible. --Wifi – it’s just time to make this free. For everyone. No more little slips of paper and logging on and off and on and off again. It’s 2017 and include it in your price it’s just better for everyone. --Paid things – First it was all of the things out at the mall, like the bowling, mini-golf, and the water slides, and I didn’t love it but the new “credit” bonus money really helps a lot to making those things a better value if you decide to try them. However, the new little ice cream wagon which medals around really angered me. Because you have to pay for it! Didn't our package include all non-room service food? This tells me yes but not ice cream? It’s a wonderful idea to have ice cream roving and other resorts do this – but changing a couple of dollars sends the wrong message to your guests – it says you did NOT pay for a premium enough experience to include ice cream. Make it free, or make it gone. --Teapots – please invest in some teapots, larger and smaller, in the buffets. This is what many people want to make their tea in and will save you on tea bags as they can fill up a pot and put in a couple of bags and a table or a person will have a pot of tea. Metal ones are excellent, with attached lids, and won’t get broken. Every morning I have to ask my water to fill my tea cup 6 or 7 times with hot water when one larger teapot would be there for me and make me very happy. --Spa—The spa should be ashamed. We visited on Friday, Feb 24th and it was a mess. Checking in the employees were more interested in chatting together about internal matters than checking us in. And when they tried they were interrupted multiple times, it was very unprofessional. In the thermal pools area there are dirty towels strewn about, half eaten pieces of fruit, no clean glasses at the check in, in the thermal areas, OR in the waiting area. It’s messy, there is no one to help you, they are out of towels, and it’s just not up to the standards. Our treatment was fine but felt rushed and then we were out. I was so disappointed because the facilities were nice but they need a major personnel overhaul or something. Overall, we love the Barcelo Maya Palace and I am always appreciating the new beds, bus, no towel cards, and many other changes. We notice these things, and it’s always possible to improve! Thank you.

    “Get there and Enjoy!”

The palace is at one end of a string of Barcelo resorts connected by sidewalks and all with multiple restaurants, pools, bars, and shared activity areas, shopping, exercise, and a small casino. If you are going to see music played on the large beach stage, be advised that the Palace is at the opposite end of the complex, so get ready to walk (or take the shuttle). Food is very good throughout, drinks are included and plentiful, and staff does an impressive job keeping indoor and outdoor areas clean and inviting. I would stay here again but would probably check out one of the Barcelo places closer to the stage. The Palace restaurants are an additional fee for non-Palace guests, but I thought the food was as good or better at the other restaurants (Fuentes, Kyoto, Lindo).

    “Perfectly Lovely Resort”

This is a large, well groomed resort with a lovely setting, spacious rooms, pools that seem to go on forever, a variety of shops, and a superb gymnasium. I've read some of the more recent reviews and agree with most of what's been said. The buffet restaurants were very good and the specialty restaurants we tried were a step up. The staff are courteous and solicitous. I recommend the resort, but have to point out the following: Our check-in was mishandled as we reserved adjoining rooms but were given rooms at opposite ends of the hall. Once we got the adjoining rooms the keys didn't work. Eventually it all got straightened out but it took two hours. Check-out was not much better as the staff was unable to close out the credit card charge they applied to assure our on site purchases would be covered. We did not opt for the Premium Service and thus ended up paying for WIFI, which frankly speaking, was a little slow for my taste. I noticed some guests tipped at restaurants and bars while others did not. Some guidance at check-in on expectations for tips would have been welcome.

    “The food ...”

Just returned home from the Dave Matthew's concert. This place is huge but we don't mind walking and the grounds are gorgeous to look at. The beach was awesome with lounge chairs all around the palm trees in a totally chill setting. Didn't go in the pools; we are from Florida and they seemed a little chilly for our taste. Drinks were good - we are pretty much strictly craft beer drinkers so the all inclusiveness of that aspect fell a little short for us since there's only Corona or Modelo but that's strictly personal preference. The room was average. Now the food. I swear I will never eat at a buffet again. Let me say we are not picky eaters at all. We've traveled for 18 years and have stayed at plenty of all inclusives with buffets and this ranked as the worst food we've ever had. Reading the prior reviews, I'm just not sure what food you were eating but the best food we had was at the concert and at the Rio Secreto. Cheap quality, quick turn around crap food. Not ONE person we spoke with in 5 days had really any rave reviews. We even went to Capri and the pasta was nothing you couldn't whip up in the buffet line and when you order the ravioli you get 1, lol. It was ridiculous at that point to us so we bailed on our other reservation because we had discovered the tacos at the concert. Seriously, those tacos were great and they were prepared by this resort so why can't you make something that fresh and good tasting in your buffets? Sad. Sorry to be harsh but I've been hangry for 5 days.
