Nightlife in Mallorca: get the most out of the island after dark

The capital of the Balearics and the largest city on the islands, Palma unsurprisingly is one of Mallorca’s nightlife hubs. And unlike many of the resort areas, there’s a buzz to the place throughout the year as locals, international residents and visitors take to the streets after dark. Bar hopping, sipping a cocktail in style or busting out your dance moves, no matter what takes your fancy, the compact city centre means Palma nightlife is all just a short walk away.

A night out in Palma often starts in the old fishermen’s quarter of Santa Catalina – sometimes before the sun actually sets! Join locals and a youngish crowd for afternoon tapas and drinks around Santa Catalina market. You’ll be embracing the Spanish custom of tardeo, easing your way into the evening before deciding whether to call it a night, catch a bite and then head home, or take things up a notch.

Your next stop might be the buzzing bars and restaurants on the pedestrianised Carrer de la Fàbrica. Bustling, bold – brash even – and unapologetically party-focused, Magaluf is what likely springs to mind if someone from the UK thinks of nightlife in Mallorca. And even if Magaluf nightlife is not your usual scene, it has to be experienced at least once. Home to the island’s biggest nightclub, the multi-floor, 7,000-capacity BCM Mallorca, plus a beachside strip lined with an unending succession of bars and clubs, the partying here is hard and simply does not stop.

Magaluf is where you come for long wild nights and drinks that won’t blow a hole in your holiday budget, making it a mecca for a predominantly younger, largely British crowd. Bananas and Tokio Joe’s rank among the best bars and clubs in Magaluf, but there are literally dozens of other venues offering up pounding beats in a high-energy atmosphere. 

If you fancy a jolt of the electricity of Magaluf nightlife but want somewhere quieter to stay, try a more serene spot in Calvià. You’ll be a stone’s throw from the action if you want to dip in, but in altogether calmer surroundings.

Holidaying with children and want an easy-going but still vibrant night-time atmosphere? Family-oriented Palma Nova not far from Magaluf is a great option. As the sun’s last rays fade over the Mediterranean, the beachfront promenade begins to hum with life. But first, start with a sundowner cocktail or food and drinks at Il Chiringo Beach bar without even leaving the sand. Soak up that laid-back Balearic ambience as the waves lap metres away and restless kids can be sent to play safely close by.

If you’re looking to build the tempo, British-style pubs buzz with karaoke and live music, while sleek cocktail bars add a dash of style. Palma Nova nightlife is more relaxed, less frantic – perfect for groups who want to chat, laugh and linger.

The Alcúdia area in northern Mallorca is another family-focused holiday destination that caters to night owls all the same. There’s plenty of choice after dark, but the atmosphere is more relaxed and refined, appealing to an older clientele. Banana Club, not too far from the marina, is a Puerto de Alcúdia nightlife institution. A club on two floors with panoramic lifts that whisk you to a trendy rooftop bar and cocktail lounge, it promises an exclusive atmosphere and themed nights, making it a key spot for partying in the north of the island.

Long popular with Irish visitors seeking a place in the sun, the resort hosts one of the Balearics biggest Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations. It can be jumping in the summer months when the action is centred around the Ramón de Montcada strip and the area known as The Square, which stages open-air shows and concerts.

Evenings might begin at beachside bars like Alma Beach & Cocktail Bar or Chiringuito Ponent II before continuing with live music, karaoke and DJs. Family-friendly venues abound while Santa Ponsa bars and clubs keep the party going into the small hours. Santa Ponsa nightlife is energetic without being overwhelming, drawing a mix of couples, groups and families looking for some seaside fun.
