    “We loved the staff”

    This was our first time and we were not surprised to meet people that have come here for many years. The staff all are hard working and happy. Edwin at the bar has worked there ten years. And Carlos works hard keeping track of empty glass s he’s amazing. Everything is clean and we will go back.

    “A SOLID 3.5 STAR Hotel”

    We enjoyed this hotel for the Expedia deal we got. The grounds with winding pathways to each bungalow— trees, shrubs, night lighting, landscape— were beautiful like a mini manicured jungle, and the hotel is very clean if small and simple. The staff is painfully kind, but no one speaks English. The food is average and surprisingly small in selection (4 starch options, 4 protein options, unvaried salad bar, basic deli/charcuterie, fabulous fruit, mini pastries that are homemade and delicious, self serve ice cream, fresh juices) but also tasty and enough to satisfy a very basic eater. Problem with the buffet is it's so small, that the line ups become so long. They also have a grill at the far end of the dining room (grilling meat presumably) but I never ventured to see, as they serve TONS of pork and I'm not a fan. The snack bar near the pool is terrible and people jump on it like vultures as soon as it's put out. Again LONG line for flimsy burgers in pan, shrivelled pork dogs, nacho cheese in a pump, fries behind glass, a salad bar that empties very fast (mostly on the floor). The fruit is always yummy and plentiful. There are no plates to serve yourself, only those ballpark paper bowls that hold no food, you need a third arm. There is only ONE bar for the WHOLE hotel open at any given time, and again, LONG line ups all day. No pool service, no premium booze, no English. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Great water pressure, very basic toiletries, yummy "Nespresso-like" machine in each room, mini fridge, safe, etc. Beds need replacing, but sheets are nice cotton...good pillows! The new sushi restaurant needs better chefs, but the space is gorgeous, almost like being off the property...maybe even out of Costa Rica completely. If you order the rib eye, you get pork as we did, so choose wisely. Gym LOVELY. Theatre LOVELY (and way bigger than the buffet!). For the money, the hotel is a win. We got a golf cart, well worth the money.

    “Fantastic Staff Members”

    This was our second stay at the hotel. We loved it so much that we extended this time to 10 Days. By our third day we noticed that the dining experience was just not what we remembered. All the other little nitpicking things that people complain about didn’t bother us. But when your there for 10 days and you have to eat in the same place about 30 times, you want the experience to be pleasant. I sent my concerns in an email to the management and immediately had a request to meet with me. By the next meal the issues had been corrected, staff clearly had been given a “pep talk” and management was highly visible during all the meals. They were very thankful for me for pointing out my concerns and acted on my feedback immediately, and I was grateful for being listened to. All that being said, the Staff at the occidental are what make the experience so memorable. I really hope that the hotel takes notice of those who genuinely care about people’s experiences and maybe thin out the ones who don’t seem to enjoy their jobs. There were many that made our vacation wonderful and most were there the last time we stayed. This is more for the management, but if you go to the resort see if you can find these lovely people: I would like to thank the lifeguard/volleyball player/ surfer who treated my tiny cut like it was a serious injury (I’m sorry I didn’t get his name because we greeted each other with Amigo/Amiga). There is a groundskeeper who makes sure that guests understand how to say “Pura Vida” if nothing else. Then there’s Carlos who tirelessly cleans the beach and the entire resort, delivers drinks and always, always has a genuine smile. Edwin the bartender has a gruff exterior at first, but once you meet him he’ll have your next drink waiting for you with a smile. By the end of your stay you will have some kind of inside joke with him. I wish I knew the name of the bartender who had the shift before him the week of 1/3-1/10 because he was also fantastic and very patient in helping me with my Spanish. Alberto at Oceana was another person who made you feel like a friend and enjoyed practicing his English while we practiced our Spanish. I would also very much like to thank Adina who was seemingly everywhere and always smiling, always helpful at breakfast in the morning and then in the bar in the afternoon. These people and some I missed are what brought us back the first time. And hopefully we will get to see them again soon!

    “Старый отель”

    Старый отель, когда-то бывший 5*, сейчас мимикрирует под 4*. Пляжа как такового нет, камни, территория небольшая и убирается плохо. Памперсы от детишек заботливо свернутые под ножкой лежака - обычное дело. Унилая анимация, делать абсолютно нечего.

    “Ужасно”

    Ужасный, старый отель с отвратительным пляжем! Единственный плюс all inclusive! На 4 звезды совсем не тянет- скорее слабая 3...ремонт здесь делали очевидно очень давно! В- общем впечатление об отеле не позитивное!
