Description of the area

This historic city is ideal to visit all year round. Cáceres was declared a World Heritage City in 1986 and it has one of the most complete urban settings from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the world; its buildings take us back to times past.

The places to discover are amazing. Just stop to admire the silhouette of a tower, a shield or the impossible layout of a cobblestone alley. The Co-cathedral of Santa María, Palacio de las Veletas (Archaeological Museum), Palaces of the Golfines (lower and upper), Casa del Sol, Bujaco Tower or the Arco de la Estrella are amongst the most beautiful and admirable monuments.

At night, the city appears be sleeping, and it is when its beauty can be best admired. The silence and the calm of its streets, the shadows of Medieval buildings and different balconies. It is most definitely an incredible setting which unfolds before your eyes.

Cuisine

Cáceres' gastronomy includes many typical dishes made with pork and several pork derivatives. Furthermore, it includes a great array of game meat.

Cold cuts from this region are also excellent, especially ham. It is worth mentioning the Casar cheeses, famous for their “Torta del Casar”, and honey from Los Ibores.

Wines from Casar are also worth trying to confirm their quality and strong flavour.

Visits

There are many places in Cáceres which are must-sees! They include:

Plaza Mayor. The beautiful main square which is the administrative centre of the city, surrounded by arcades from the 16th century and to the West an Almohad wall.

Godoy Palace.
A Renaissance style palace, Francisco de Godoy ordered its construction in 1548 with wealth gained in America.

Co-cathedral of Santa María.
Situated in Santa María Square, it's construction began in the thirteenth century and it was rebuilt with three Gothic naves in the 16th century.
Lower Palace of the Golfines. The Catholic Monarchs resided here during their visits to the city and it belonged to one of the most important families in Cáceres.

Casa de las Veletas
Casa de las Veletas (House of the Weathercock) is mostly from the end of the 15th century and it includes part of an old Arabic fortress.

Shopping

The busiest commercial areas in the city of Cáceres are around the Main Square and Pintores street. Paseo de Cánovas, España and Alemania avenues and the Ruta de la Plata shopping centre are also important commercial locations.

Furthermore, Cáceres offers a wide array of craft products such as the copper and brass pieces from Guadalupe de Baños de Montemayor, the chestnut tree wickerwork from Hervás, pottery from Arroyo, etc.
