“5th Stay at Barcelo Bavaro Grand Resort...”

Just completed my fifth stay at the Barcelo Palace, and it's better than ever! Please see my previous review(s) for more in-depth info on the resort overall - I'll focus on the improvements since my last stay in this review. Barcelo recently sent me an invitation to complete a survey, and one of the first questions they asked was why I chose Barcelo for a repeat visit. My answer there, and my review here focuses on the people. The employees are kind and polite, which you'd probably expect from any resort, but the staff at Barcelo set a new standard in attentiveness, service with a smile, customer-first, and warm hospitality. I've always opted for the Premium Level upgrade, and perhaps this helps, but just about everyone I've EVER come across (4 years running) fits into this category. It's no accident - when a company treats their employees well, it comes across in the interactions with customers. Here are some highlights from this past trip (late-May, 2018).... The wi-fi issues noted on previous reviews seem to have (finally) been resolved. We received one Wi-Fi code per-person, which worked all week. The wi-fi worked well in the room, near the pools, on the beach, and everywhere we visited on the resort. Glad this one is resolved! I brought my (mid-70's) mom and aunt this trip. We got my mom an electric scooter, and the folks at Premium made the process so easy. They simply called the room when it arrived, showed us how to charge and use it, and away we went. They checked on us a couple of times to make sure we weren't having any issues, and really went above-and-beyond to make sure mom was well-taken care of. Twice during our stay, the Premium Staff got one of the bellmen to pick us up and deliver us to the restaurant on a golf cart. And at check-out, the golf cart appeared again without us even asking. What great service! We were celebrating mom's birthday, and I asked one of the Premium staff if we could get her a cake. We came back from dinner to find balloons, streamers, a cake and a bottle of champagne/ice bucket in the room. Amazing and so appreciated! New to our stay this trip was the breakfast buffet (for Premium Level guests only) at the Coral restaurant. This is great addition to the Premium-level upgrade. The large buffets are busy, and often very loud and crowded. The breakfast buffet at Coral is much lower-key, much less crowded and offers mostly the same options as the larger buffets (which offer a HUGE variety of food). Service is outstanding, and the staff remembered us and welcomed us by name after the first day. Sandra Sanchez is one of the supervisors, and really went above and beyond, gathering her staff for a group picture to celebrate mom's birthday. Sandra remembered us from prior trips (she previously worked in the Premium Lounge) and went out of her way to make us feel welcome and "VIP"! The restaurants were about as I remember them from previous trips, with the favorites being Chez Gourmet, Mexico Lindo and the Spanish restaurant (name escapes me as I write this). We tried parasailing this time....what a trip. Once we got in the air, it was amazing. We were shuttled over in a small boat, picking up a few others along the way. We were then transferred over to the parasailing boat - a few got in our boat and we got in the larger boat, then we had to wait a good 45 minutes before we were airborne. It felt a little like a cattle-call, but once we went up, it was pretty cool. Worth the ~$100 price-tag for two! The other thing worth mentioning is how well-maintained the resort is. As on previous trips, we saw small armies of staff tending to fallen palm fronds, touching up paint, raking up seaweed, cutting down coconuts, or just trimming and cleaning shrubs and plants. It's like Disney there - in a good way - everything looks new/nearly-new and is maintained every single day. For the volume of folks that must come in and out of the resort, it looks like the place just opened a month ago. Great and outstanding job in this department. I've already booked my sixth stay for later this year, and can't wait to get back! Here are a few of the staff members that were truly outstanding and/or keep us coming back.... “Beware of bugs”

It might or might not be their fault. But both our kids got sick. One with hand foot and mouth. Needed to go to the local hospital. Not that serious in the end but it presented as awful blisters and rash and 39 degree fever on a 9 month old and looked very scary. It’s at this point you realize quite how 3rd world DR is and you hope and pray it’s nothing serious and the hospitals are a joke. Anyway the other kid just got a fever and puking. Am very sure it came from the pool which must i admit be hard to keep clean. The simple fact is that’s it’s full of a melting pot of people from all over the world with different bugs that kids won’t be immune to. They lick and drink water from pool that has been peed and pood in and basically is a big mix of bugs from all over the world. It’s not surprising they both got sick. But I saw a poo floating in the kids pool. Certainly did not see regular cleaning of the baby pool which should have had protocols for such things and did not. Basically I won’t ever again take my kids to one of these massive resorts again. For the resort - It really was not bad at all for the price and the Dominicans are lovely friendly people. It’s probably an impossible task to keep these pools bug free. The last resort we went to st Regis Mauritius. Stayed in their equivalent of premium. Was a different level. Much smaller and you can see how they keep their pools cleaner as there is a factor of ten less people. Anyway food and drink, service etc was all what I would call 3 star. Perfectly fine for the price. Just be aware you take your life in your hands a bit in the cesspit pool

    “Perfect Vacation”

Hi, another 17 days of barcelo bavaro palace premium came to an end. It was my 25th time already in this resort. And like everytime i enjoyed it like no other vacation ever. This resort is perfect for friends, families, singles, pensionists (better booking adults) ... for everybody and this all over the year. It´s so huge, that you can find everything ... silence on the left and right side of the beach, party in the middle close to the poolbar area, action at the poolbar ... kids areas ... very good restaurants ... nightlife ... very large pool areas ... The only critics that should be allowed is the music at the poolbar, instead of reggaeton and new latino music it´s boring lounge/jazz music, that kills the atmosphere and a lot of people bring their own bluetooth boxes to play good music. 2nd point: the DJ at disco bavaro is terrible. He has no idea of music or how to use a party-crowd. Every night the same action ... around half past midnight there are hundreds of people on the dancefloor and he changes music from one song to another and cleans the dancefloor in 10 min. And he is doing this for years already. But the best on the resort is the bavaro beach! The beaches in front of all the other resorts in Punta Cana have no chance because of the Bavaro Beach. It´s the best part of Punta Cana with 1000% difference to the others. Premium is very good, because without you are as guest of the Palace part of the resort not able to use La Brisa and this restaurant is absolutly awesome for lunch. You can eat perfect fish and other seafood and many other fresh prepared stuff 10 meters away from the waterline. All my friends love La Brisa from their first day in this resort. My favourite restaurants for dinner are: La Fuente (spanish), La Comedie (french), Chez Gourmet (french - only for premium) and Kyoto (japanese - show cooking and ala carte - i prefer ala carte). For any questions about the resort: just write mail.
