“January-February 2017 Vow Renewal with a 20+ person group (with kids)”

20+ of our friends/family stayed at Barceló Puerto Vallarta for 6 nights in Jan-Feb 2017. We have stayed at other all-inclusive resorts in Puerto Vallarta in the past. We prefer the mountains/ocean of Puerto Vallarta to the flat/plantation feel of Nuevo Vallarta. We picked Barceló Puerto Vallarta because of the location (secluded with the mountains/rain forest meeting the ocean) and the price (asking others to travel with us). This is your standard, average Mexican beachfront property. Other than the actual location/setting, there is nothing extraordinary (or above average) about this resort. If you are looking for a place where you feel welcome, special and pampered and still have secluded beach where the mountains meet the ocean, then stay at the Hyatt Ziva (formerly Dreams), they have never disappointed anyone we know. Planning for a group/vow renewal (be prepared to micro-manage): Timely communication was my biggest gripe about the planning process. All communication is either by International Long Distance or email. I realize they likely have many other events they are planning and that our 20+ person group (10+ rooms) is relatively small by their standards. They could dramatically improve in this area (communication). My biggest piece of advice is get EVERYTHING in writing (on the actual contract), explicitly the way you want it. Don't leave any grey area, what you want will get lost in translation and differing interpretations. Little effort was made to make us feel special about celebrating our 20-year anniversary here. You would think that when there is an event planned with an event ‘coordinator’, the coordinator would try to find you at check-in or shortly after arrival to iron out any last-minute details or to at least find a time to meet... Not here. We had to initiate contact at. every. single. step. When they finally attempted to reach us (the day before our event), we were literally on our way out the door to visit PV for the day. They wanted an hour or so to meet with us, we could only give them 15 minutes due to the extremely short notice. They knew when we arrived and what room we were staying in… Hotel: This is Mexico and it is an older resort (also part of its charm). The location is awesome. It is secluded (15-20 min cab/bus ride to the closest part of PV). Rooms are a decent size. Better views the closer you get to the ocean. Premium Level: 1) the coffee is MUCH better in the Premium Lounge, 2) the top shelf liquor is in the Premium Lounge (Patron, Grey Goose, etc..), 3) free Wi-Fi, 4) free room service, 5) rooms are located on the top floors, but proximity to the ocean is still a crap-shoot. If none of this is important to you, then don’t pay the extra $. Food: Average at best. Nothing spectacular. You should schedule anything in their specialty restaurants as soon as you arrive. We tried planning reservations prior to our arrival by email (per the website), but only 1 person received a response: “we do not know the restaurant availability until your day of arrival, please check for reservations when you arrive”. A couple people did get sick one night, but that can happen anywhere. Pool: They are pools. One is deep, the other is not-so-deep. Only the hot tub is heated. Don't expect to bring any food to where you are sitting by the pool, security is more than willing to escort you back to the place you got your food. Servers will also not bring food to you by the pool. Beverage service around the pool is average if you don’t look/sound like you are a local (even in our group of tippers). If you look/sound like you are a local, they refresh drinks before they are even empty. TIP: look and sound like a local… Beach: I knew what we were getting here. You can see many picts online. Small and secluded. Beach is small with the Mismaloya River cutting through it. Vendors are there, but not pushy if you are polite. Don’t see what you want, ask them, they will find whatever it is you are looking for... The vendors in the White ‘polo’ style shirts are registered, the others are just people trying to make a living selling their goods. The resort does provide kayaks & basic snorkeling gear only under the right water conditions…as determined by someone. They were available to us 2 out of the 6 days we were there. Except for 1 day, it didn’t appear that the water/current/tide conditions changed much (we were in the ocean every day). Bugs: Some in our group got eaten alive, other didn’t have a single bit. It really didn’t seem to matter which kind of spray you used (I never sprayed and had a one bit). Mismalyoa: Quant little beachfront village. There are more restaurants with bars along the beach with tables set up for you to enjoy. You can also rent jet skis, charter boats, stand up paddle boards, etc. from one of many places. We charted through Suzie Q (you will know her when you see her) and had a great whale watching & snorkeling excursion for ~$10-15 per person: kids were cheaper. Areas of Improvement: 1) Better communication with guests, especially when planning an event. 2) Add a floor plan to the room description or update the room photos as they still do not accurately depict the rooms at this resort. 3) Advise staff that just because someone isn’t from Mexico, that doesn’t mean that they don’t speak the language (bad talking guests). 4) Make your guests feel welcome/pampered/special. Summary: Our group always travels well together and can have an awesome time anywhere we go and we had an awesome time here. The staff really didn’t step up and the food did nothing to distinguish itself from any other 3-star Mexican beachfront property. Price & location bump this resort up to a 3 to 3.5-star facility (since there is not a ½ star option, I am rounding down). All it would take to get this up to a 4 star would be that extra effort from the staff to make you, as a paying guest on a hard-earned vacation, feel welcome & special.

    “Enjoyed my trip!”

I visited Barcelo Puerto Vallarta for 5 nights with my mother and two children. We all had a great time and were all equally happy with the resort grounds, food, and entertainment. We were pleased with the friendliness of staff. One employee named Tony that worked in the Cantina stood out above the rest. He was very friendly and helpful.. a very personable man.

“Nice facility and pools, food and sickness were the worst!”

We were at resort from March 12-19th. Pros: awesome pools, great staff (Oscar in the dining room served us every morning at the same table and was so attentive even learning my sons name and treating him so well), room was nice, bed was comfortable. Spanish restaurant was excellent. The bay the resort is on is breezy and beautiful. Cons: 3/4 adults were sick during the trip and when we returned home, I think there is a stomach bug going around, but sanitization of the dishes and extra washing could be helpful. No one wants to be sick on vacation especially at a four star resort. We were eaten by bugs the first evening but we never even noticed any bugs, the bites just appeared. Food at the buffet isn't as good as at other places we have stayed in the past.
