    “The good/the bad”

The bad: The shower didn't have a full glass door or closure so the floor got soaked each and every night. Bring your own towels, beach towels, hand towels and wash clothes. Wash clothes and hand towels were not given ever. The room does provide 2 beach towels but if there are more people in your room it's hard to get one. You have to go all the way to the front desk to get a card to trade in for a towel. The front desk is very far from the towel area. No free WiFi throughout the resort. If you signed up for mybarcelo you did get it free but for only 1 phone per room. That’s difficult when there are 5 people traveling with you and we all know the kids (and adults) like to be connected. A/C rarely worked. Balcony doors didn’t latch closed. Cockroaches in rooms. Checking in and checking out was difficult. We arrived at 11:30am and were not permitted to enter our room until after 4pm. This was typical as when you walked through the lobby there was always people sitting on the couches with their suitcases next to them waiting to get into their rooms. We also didn't know we had to have them bring our luggage to us. After a few hours we went up front to see our luggage still sitting there. When asked why it wasn't delivered they look at us puzzled because they had no clue we even got our room. Not many people spoke enough English to even order simple things like wine at dinner. Service was slow and rarely did the servers come back to ask if you wanted anything else. For example, at the outside Mexican restaurant we had placed our orders, waited a very long time and pretty much had to get up and get our own drink refills because the waitress just disappeared. The next time we went there we thought if we tip her she’ll give us better service. That was not the case. There was 1 server at the morning buffet that knew us and did make sure we had our coffee and mimosas. He was a breath of fresh air. The specialty restaurants filled up fast so if you want to eat at them twice in 1 week make sure you make your reservations when you get there or you’ll be stuck at the buffet. Towels in the room were impossible to get. A room that was supposed to have 4 people in it would only receive 2 towels even when asked repeatedly for more. There was no one serving drinks anywhere. If you wanted a drink you had to go to a bar. There was no bar for the regular level of service on the beach so if you were on the beach you had to walk to the pool bar for service. No turn down service. No alcoholic beverages or snacks in the room. We had to move buildings because the condenser in our room was leaking and a wooden ceiling tile fell on my husband and in my children’s room their A/C wasn’t working at all. When we moved from building 13 (we had an ironing board, the basket in the bathroom was filled with a shower cap, razor etc, and the closet had bathrobes) building 11 had none of these things. If I knew that I would have moved the bathrobe and ironing board with me. My son got bit by sand fleas. The pool bar has a major flaw with the waterfall over top of it. We always bring covered cups with us but the people that were getting served in the regular cups and wanted to drink them in the pool were usually trying to cover their drinks while walking away from the bar but most likely they got waterlogged. My advice, turn off the waterfall or do it where it’s only the side not over the entire bar. The main pool was always filled with cups, straws etc. There wasn’t much entertainment and the night time shows really weren’t up to par to the other resorts we’ve stayed at in the DR. The good: The grounds were well maintained. The food was fantastic. The maid did a good job. The workers were friendly and tried to be helpful. Security and works always available and around. Very safe atmosphere. There was even a security guard on the beach.

    “Good family Vacation.”

This is the second property I have stayed at Punta Cana. When I compared the two, sadly Occidental ranks a bit lower. If you speak Spanish well, this is the place to be. Wifi: Please walk outside and get a SIM card/unlimited data for $15 for 5 days instead of paying $45. Guys on bikes will try to sell things. 1st floor is the best as most rooms do not have strong AC. We had few AC issues, but front desk was very good handling it. Food: After 4 days, got a bit tiring to eat same food. Few people in the main restaurant work hard and always smiling. Restaurants: OK. Some dishes are better than others. Please don't expect real Italian food in a Caribbean resort. Less expectation would go a long way. Diving. Don't. You will only see few fish. At least I saw a turtle. People at the Dive shop are nice. Free catamaran and wind surfing available. Beach: Very good. Warm water. No food/drink servers in the beach or pool area. Have to walk to the beach restaurant to get food/drink. Gym: Decent. Spa: Didn't try. Tennis: Clay dirt courts. Quality Rackets and balls provide. Need to wash shoes after due to dirt. Pool: Big and Long. Too much young crowd near the swim up bar most days, so in the afternoon, you can go hunting for cups, folks in the pool. Second pool closer to beach is better. Beach Towels: I used same one for 2-3 days as they ran out when I want it changed. Towel location is far from the main pool. You only get one beach towel and you have to guard it like a baby. Drinks: some good, some worse. Depends on where you get it at. Overall I consider this a good family vacation as I got to spend quality time with my family. I didn't care about the food or drink much. I can't complain much when I considered the price paid, but not having a warm beach towel was not cool.

“Quick Getaway with Wife and Daughter”

Our first time to an all inclusive, check in was fairly easy, (language barrier in effect), but simple and easy. Welcoming staff and most are very friendly, various dinner venues (Long pants are required for men for dinners (along with reservations). Main pool is very large, and has a swim up bar, two whirlpools, and also has three other pools. Complex is easy to navigate, well lit and you feel safe in all areas. Entertainment options include some shows by staff, (Michael Jackson Review, circus show, dancing, etc). Beach activities include snorkeling (not much to see here, excursions available), windsurfing, kayaking, and diving excursions as well. A free scuba lesson (pool based) is offered daily, other lesson fees may apply for other activities. Complex has some small souvenir shops and met our needs for a first time visit. We would stay here again, and thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay here. We will visit again! Security can be seen often, along with grounds and cleaning staff.

“FABULOUS Service , staff and Beach Location”

This was our first time in Punta Cana BUT def not our last!!! Hotel is just the right size and everything perfectly stationed. FOOD- Amazing and in my opinion it beats Playa del Carmen hands down(which is where we usually go).... Lots of choices... Love love loved the fast food -pizza, burgers above the rounded staircase just wish they would play music because that is a perfect hangout spot overlooking the pool. Food choices placed close to the pools beach and lobby and not far at all to walk to from any location in the hotel. STAFF- cannot say enough about the staff.... Got way better service here than in Mexico!!! All the staff were friendly and very helpful, not at all stingy with their waters... No probs at all with towel exchange and rooms cleaned perfectly every day!!! Loved that they offer hand sanitizer going into buffet as-well. BEACH- isn't this why we go to tropical destinations?... Easy walk to Beach... was beautiful, always able to find shade under a palm tree. Beach activities were fun but not too loud for those that wanted to just relax...my 18 and 21 yr old joined in and I hung out under the palm tree and read.!!! Also the parasailing was inexpensive and kiddos loved it. GYM- yes we went to the gym while on vacation🤣... And as a Barcelo chain I would be ashamed.. equipment is Old as dirt.. dark and Very Small!!! Def needs an upgrade to the gym and Spa. You can tell the hotel was remolded but they totally forgot the gym/spa.

“New Management is Ruining the Royal Club! 3 of best bartenders demoted!”

We have all been going to the Royal Club for years and have always looked forward to seeing our favorite people in the Royal Club, they always remember your names and your preferences and felt like family. We were just there in May again and had a fabulous time. Rocio, Carmen and Genesis at the RC Bar made everyday perfect, and now they are relegated to the lobby bar??? Since new management has taken over, everyone is either being fired, demoted or just leaving in disgust! This makes no sense! These people work so hard every single day to make our stay perfect! PLEASE RESTORE THESE GIRLS TO THEIR ORIGINAL POSITIONS!!!! They do not deserve to be treated like this.
