    “Outstanding Customer Service!”

    This hotel was amazing and perfect for our long weekend! We have previously stayed at the other Barcelo Occidental location (Caribe), and booked this hotel instead for our winter getaway. We arrived before the 3pm check-in, but Julian, the Bell Boy, helped us get a room earlier (within the hour of arrival) and ensured the hotel made our stay extra special since it was my boyfriend's 30th birthday. They delivered Champagne to our room DAILY and have special treats every day. At first, our room had issues with the AC. When we called guest service to complain, they sent a technician within 5 minutes. Then, when I went to front desk to complain again because it was still warm and the AC was not working, they told me they already had a different room ready for us and would send someone up within 10 mins to help us relocate to the other room. They actually upgraded us at no cost. Julian also helped get reservations for the restaurants when Guest Services could not. It is a perfect location for excursions and easy to get to downtown Punta Cana. I would say, don't book your excursions before hand as the hotel has similar prices and services as other providers like Expedia, and can do additional discounts if you ask. The only improvement they would need is the food. I would have liked more traditional Dominican food (criolla). Also, ditch the disposable plastic cups. Not only reusable plastic cups are better for the environment but they also add a level of sophistication. I would recommend this hotel to my friends, and would stay again!

    “Great resort”

    It is a clean and beautiful resort. The beach is great and the food is pretty good. The staff is very nice and the room is very comfortable. There is no beach umbrellas on the beach and sometimes the room wasn't ready at 16:30 when we wanted to get ready for the night.

    “Beautiful resort/Questionable service”

    Beautiful hotel, extremely clean and well kept; great location on the beach. The food is mediocre, with the exception of the pizzeria which was amazing. The service at the restaurants left a foul taste in my mouth. I question if my race/ethnicity played in role in the poor service provided. The front reception staff were amazing.

    “As always AMAZING!!!!!”

    We've been First Club owners since 2015 and as always the experience has been amazing. The food is great, the service is great, the rooms are very nice, the staff is great and once you get to know them the experience gets even better.

    “Not exactly what we were looking for”

    We spent 7 nights here in January 2020, along with another couple and unfortunately, we will not return to this resort again. In summary, the food was basic, the spa staff and beach merchant harassment was beyond annoying, the WiFi I paid for was inadequate, and the lack of beach services made this a vacation to forget. Keep reading for my Pros, Cons, and Tips from our vacation experience at Occidental Punta Cana. Pros: Rooms: They were cleaned and restocked daily and we were never disturbed. We could regulate the room temperature easily. Comfortable bed. Note: There was no conditioner, only shampoo, body wash, and bar soap, but no washcloths. Beach: Never a problem finding a lounge chair. Great beach area and swimming. Staff: Miguelina, our waitress at the lobby bar was the bestest! 4pm Bingo in the lobby was also fun. Most staff were friendly. Cons: Food: The buffet food was never hot, not even warm. The restaurants requiring reservations were mediocre and poor service. The food was flavorless with little to no seasoning. I felt like a second class citizen because we spoke English and did not speak Spanish. Spanish speaking guests who would arrive after us would be served before we would. Staff: The nonstop harassment from spa staff at the entrance to every building trying to sell you spa services became very annoying after two days. Add the merchants on the beach peddling cigars, sunglasses, jewelry, photos with animals, and excursions, it was uncomfortable. I would say we were approached at least 10-15 times a day by spa staff and beach merchants asking us to buy something. It is hard to relax with so many people approaching you. WiFi: I can’t believe an all-inclusive resort charges guests for WiFi. It was $40 for the week for two devices; however, the WiFi does not work in your room or on the patio off your room. We were in building 10, next to the lobby and the spa/fitness center (garden side, not pool side) and were not able to get WiFi. WiFi did work outside the room, in the common areas, and at the beach. Beach Bar: We did not upgrade to First or Royal club. We were just regular guests. There are nice beach bars for the First Club and Royal Club. The rest of the guests, on some days, not all days, had a guy with an umbrella and a small cooler cart with a limited selection of liquor and mixers and Presidente beer. The only other place to get a drink was by the beach club on the far corner of the property. The beach was crowded on that side and all you could smell was the fumes from the motor boats picking up para-sailors. There were no wait staff walking the beach to take drink orders. This is the first time I’ve ever been to an all-inclusive with that poor of beach service. Tips: We bought our excursions from the beach merchant where they were cheaper. Take a walk off the resort into town to buy your gifts/souvenirs. They are much cheaper and there will be someone at the corner bar that will guide you around. Don’t be afraid to haggle. We often countered with ½ their asking price and didn’t pay much more than that. If you want free WiFi, go sit through the 1 hour time share presentation on your first day. Bring your own insulated drinking container. It will save you trips to the bar and your ice will last longer.

    “Great resort”
