    Our stay was very pleasant and comfortable - the only suggestions I would like to make are cupboard doors on the clothing rail and more info on what the hotel had to offer such as the 360 bar, the spa / health features

    “Great place to stay”

    A one week vacation at this hotel was a great place to stay for its location,cleanliness service and value. Everyone was friendly from the receptionist on arrival to the late night bar staff at the wonderful roof top bar. Bus stop right outside the door to travel into the centre of Funchal or further afield, or just walk down the lane to the clifftop lido and prom. Hotel clean and well maintained, reported a small plumbing problem when we left in the morning, fixed by the time we returned in the evening.Meal service good, choice and quality of food very good, drinks reasonable price.Pool gym etc excellent for the size of the hotel.Multi lingual staff so no problems for the multi national guest.

    “Good for short stay”

    Allegro Hotel is difficult to review. Great place to stay for a couple of nights but not for longer it is sole less and lacking atmosphere also no entertainment. Good points and there are many. Bed very comfortable, room has a fridge and safe both free to use plus kettle and cups also hairdryer and pool towels in your room. The bathroom has no bath but a great shower. The hotel has been refurbished and everything is like new. Good pool area with loads of sun beds. Very good breakfast and I would not recommend going half board. Bad points are the room is small and lacks storage space although you can get by. The hotel is near the Lido area which means a 30 minute walk from the centre of Funchal up a very steep hill. The evening meal is waiter service and is very limited in choice. Three choices for starter and main course and two choices for desert on of which is the same fruit every day. The service was awful our first three or four days until a woman called Sara arrived in a yellow coat. She seemed to kick a few butts and the service improved dramatically food was being replenished at breakfast time where it took an age before and the service in the evening improved ten fold. We were taking 90 minutes for our evening meal and this reduced to 40 minutes in our last night. Evening meal did not start to seven, we would prefer 6 or 6-30 as we like to go out in the evening. Finally 3-50 euro for a bottle of water is the most expensive I have ever paid normally 2-20 max was a total rip off. Overall a good hotel for two or three nights but not longer

    “Great hotel in marvellous Madeira”

    Great hotel, no children running around making noise as it’s an adult only hotel, friendly staff, had a great sea view room and the hotel is accessible to shops, Lido area for swimming, restaurants and the hop on hop off tour services are about 2 minutes away. Loved it

    “Adequate Budget Hotel (definitely not 4 star)”

    This stark concrete tower hotel was built in 1973 and is very much of its time externally; it appears hopelessly dated when compared to modern holiday hotel design. The interior of the hotel has obviously been redecorated and partially refurbished recently. We chose this hotel because my wife has a mobility problem and it is close to the main road. The approach to the main entrance is still down a very steep road but for only 25 metres or so. Inside, the hotel is wheel chair friendly for the most part. The hotel is in an excellent location with numerous bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity; stops for tourist buses, public buses and the airport bus are just metres away as is a selection of shops, banks, etc. The hotel does not provide any form of in-house entertainment. A buffet style breakfast with an adequate selection of hot and cold items is served in a light and airy restaurant on the ground floor adjacent to the swimming pool. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner with either a limited choice set menu which changes daily or a buffet. The swimming pool area is impressive and well maintained with a good supply of sun loungers and table seating. The top (11th.) floor of the hotel is largely taken up by an open roof-top bar offering a plentiful supply of comfortable seating and superb land and sea views. All the hotel staff we met were pleasant, efficient and helpful. Adequate off-road car parking is provided. So far so good – but then there was the major disappointment of our room which was advertised as, but certainly not up to, 4 star standard. We had specified a sea view when booking and this we got from the small and basic concrete balcony attached to our room; some other rooms at the sides of the hotel appeared to have very poor outlooks and ones on the lower floors were over-looked from the busy main road above. Our bedroom was large enough but painted throughout in brilliant white emulsion with not a painting or a hint of colour to break the monotony; it had all the cold atmosphere of a dentist's surgery or a monk's cell. It was sparsely furnished with just one uncomfortable kitchen-type chair and provided with just a rail and two small shallow drawers for storage of clothing. A small safe was provided under the drawers for valuables but it was necessary to get down on hands and knees to access it so we did not use it. We had also clearly specified when booking that we required a double room (not twin single) and had expected to get a double bed. What we actually got were two single beds with single mattresses and single duvets pushed together as much as possible but still with a 10 centimetre gap between. This arrangement was just plain uncomfortable (would any couple have it at home?) and we did not get an acceptable night's sleep for the duration of our stay. The cluttered shelf which did service as a dressing table did not have a mirror anywhere near it but was provided with a hair drier. A modern flat screen TV and a small fridge were provided, also tea and coffee making facilities; the air conditioning was efficient. The bathroom was small and obviously constrained by the original design of the hotel. The fittings were modern but there was only an inadequate hand basin surround for keeping toiletries on; no hooks were provided for hanging a dressing gown or towels on. The hotel has recently received many glowing reviews from other guests but their rooms must have been vastly superior than ours to have warranted them. To summarise based on our experience, this is essentially a basic 3 star budget hotel which does not compare well with the many others round about and it may well struggle when a huge new hotel under construction nearby comes on line in 2019. We would not wish to stay again in a room of the same standard and feel unable to recommend this hotel as a result.
