    “Great for a short break”

Whilst billed as a 4* hotel, it is more akin to a Premier Inn. I paid for a double room for sole use. There is virtually no storage, the room was tiny with only a hanging rail for storage. The two small drawers are virtually useless. My room was situated at the rear of the building, and with the noise of the air con unit from the next door building and the road noise left it far from pleasant. Whilst the buffet breakfast was excellent in as far as choice is concerned, the evening meals initially left a lot to be desired:- choice of only two mains or dessert. I was flying with Jet2 holidays who spoke with the Rep and I was moved to a much bigger room - however there is still only the same hanging rail and two drawers for storage. I was further away from the road etc and it was much more peaceful. I did speak with a couple who were staying for three weeks and had resorted to bringing the table from their balcony to use as an additional place to store clothing!! There are plus points. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms and environs are kept spotlessly clean. After my initial complaint, the manager phoned to ask if everything was ok etc On 12th Feb, the hotel began to use the catering facilities of an adjoining property - I am aware that there is work being done in the dining area of the hotel, and cannot advise if this is a permanent or temporary feature. What I can say is that the standard of the evening meal increased. Still the same limited choice, however one evening I did not like any of the options on the menu and a salad was prepared for me. Again, showing staff were willing to assist where possible. There is no entertainment - there is a rooftop bar open five days out of seven from 6 to 10PM. There is a bar downstairs also, but unless you wanted to watch sport on the large TV, there was no atmosphere. When I saw it advertised as an Adults Only, I honestly thought there would be events/entertainment etc etc I understand that the hotel has changed ownership and it may be that the new owners will take a time to set their mark. Currently, it falls short of being a 4* hotel. Its great for cleanliness and the staff are happy and attentive. However if you are happy living out of a suitcase then this is the place to go. I was there on my own and coped with the lack of storage. It's a great place for a short break. Another example of great service - one day it was particularly windy. The seal on the double glazing unit had failed and the wind was howling in. There was a form in the room asking to note any defects, which I filled in, indicating where the wind was coming in - the noise was incredible. I dropped the form at reception, and I went out for a walk returning an hour later to find a tradesman resealing the unit - great service! The potential is there - please do something about storage and retain the association with the restaurant next door!! (Although, I did notice some elderly guests perhaps struggling with the stairs from the hotel to the restaurant)

    “Modern hotel with great service!”

We’ve booked a junior suite at this hotel for eight nights. We arrived at the hotel at 10:45 o’clock and our suite was already ready and the hotel allowed as to check-in early without any charges. The booking must be paid directly at the check-in. The lobby has a warm and cozy atmosphere where you can wait and enjoy some free water/lemonde and snacks/fruit. The hotel is located in Lido, nearby the coast, surrounded with lots of good and various restaurants and supermarkets. It’s a 30 minute walk to the marine of Funchal. On the way to the marine you’ll enjoy the nature and the view over the ocean. In case if 30 minutes is too far, you can always take the bus. There’s a bus stop in front of the hotel (line 1,2 and 4 and the Airportbus). It’s like six stops to the marine of Funchal. Our suite was at the third floor and was very clean, spacious and cozy with even two balconies! The hotel welcomed us with a bottle of water, thee and coffee, fresh baked cookies and even a welcome letter. Great housekeeping and service. The breakfast was served between 7:30-10:30 every day, including fresh fruit, fresh juices, fresh baked bread and pastries, a typical English breakfast, yoghurt, muesli, salad, different kinds of cheese and meat. You can use the gym, sauna and swimming pool without extra charges. We’ve enjoyed our stay at this wonderful hotel. A big compliment to the great staff!

    “Great break!”

Friendly, comfortable and convenient - easy for the airport bus, plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, Funchal centre a short bus ride away. The breakfasts were great and the service friendly and unobtrusive.

“Very quiet modern hotel excellent facilities”

We stayed here for a week this year January /Feb. The room was comfortable but lacked storage place for clothes but had great shower and flat screen TV. An ample balcony overlooked the pool and a southern view. Breakfast was varied and ample and contrasted with the evening meal which was to put it mildly appalling! To say anymore would need bad language. We were surprised to be asked to pay €3.50 for water with dinner. A small cup of coffee€4.00 but only €3for a glass of champagne at breakfast. The saving grace was the very nice staff.

Dear guest, We greatly appreciate the time you spent to review your recent experience in our hotel, at Barceló we always strive to exceed guests' expectations and your comments will help our teams reaching that goal.   We regret that we could not meet your expectations in what regards to the evening meal, we try to creat a menu thinking in our guest needs, we are sorry that in this case we could not achieve that. In what regards to the champagne at breakfast, we do not charge this service, everything in our breakfast room is free of charge to our guests. Thank you once again for making us your choice hotel and for your constructive comments, we certainly look forward to serving you again and to have the opportunity to exceed your expectations in a not too distant future.   Kind Regards, Julia Santana - General Manager

    “Awful rooms brilliant staff”

The rooms are reminiscent of student halls of residence. No drawer space for two people's clothing, two shelves, one chair for two people, no convenient mirror in the room, safe located inconveniently under a shelf, no apparent sound proofing. Our deal gave us dinner. For our whole week there was one choice of wine, not because they didn't have other wine, but because they didn't have a wine list! Utterly baffling. Food quality was excellent but very limited choice - 3 starters, 3 mains one desert the other being the same fruit as at breakfast. Possibly the friendliest, most efficient and hardest working staff we have encountered. The hotel is immaculately clean and there is real attention to detail. Quality of towels, linen etc is very good. Room cleaning was magically done each day when we were at breakfast, convenient and very high quality of work. Such a shame all their efforts aren't matched by attention to room design and possibly two choices of wine being available over a 7 day period!

Discussions involving the respective team members and management have taken place to review your comments, and we would like to assure you that all your concerns will be addressed and attended to. We regret that the room assigned forr you did not suit your need during your vacaction, The rooms are designed to meet the needs of our customers. Also we lament that the beverage listwas not given to you. As we try to give our clients all the variety that we have available for them to choose. Nevertheless this will not happen again. We also regret that our meal couldn´t meet your expectations, mainly because the quality and the diversity of our culinary offer counts to our strengths. We take your comments regarding our cuisine very seriously, because we wish that our gastronomy remains a very special treat for our guests. We appreciate your kind words for our staff, their kindness and helpfulness being undoubtedly one of our hotel's main assets we will definitely congratulate them all on your behalf for their contribution to your wellbeing whilst staying among us.   We sincerely lament reading that your stay was not as pleasant as it should have been and we would be very pleased to welcome you again in the future ensuring you in advance of our utmost commitment to make your next Barceló holiday experience an unforgettable one for all the right reasons.   Kind Regards, Julia Santana - General Manager
