    “Just back from a week vacation. The best part of the hotel is the beach,the bad is the food”

    Just back from Barcelo Playa Tambor, definitely NOT a 5 star hotel by international standards. There are catered to the local Costa Rican tourists, who fill out an almost empty hotel on Friday for the weekend, the rest of the week is quiet. No wifi unless you pay and only available at the lobby with poor connectivity(definitely does not meet criteria for a star hotel); the quality and variety of food is disappointing(not a 5-star hotel), obviously the star system is part of a problem if rated more appropriately like a 3to 3and half star hotel then it would be ok. The standards for maintenance of gardens and pathways are 5 stars. I would suggest to the manager(if interested) to spend less money on the appearance of gardens and put the money on food and wifi. The shows were of terrible quality. Loved Costa Rica, and their people, I would not recommend this hotel, by far of the 25-30 Barcelo Hotels I have visited in various countries

    “Customer Services and clerk attention”

    After paying the reservation, we paid $30 additional (10 per person) for getting into the hotel before 10:30 AM even when they say it is all inclusive. Customer services is not the best, clerks look tired and they do not even do contact eyes and the answers are not nice.

    “Tambor "in Progress"”

    Arrived about 8:30pm after 5 1/2 hour flight(yyz-liberia) than a 4+ hour drive. Nice driver Pedro, who did stop to have a bathroom break and if you wanted to eat something @ El Picadero.Nice place. Than in hotel nobody to greet us? Or help us with our suitcase? Doesn't matter but normally we always had bellboys helping with suitcase! Found out that they are there, but seem to be only during the day when the Latino people come in! So checked in. We thought that we had some privileges because of early booking with air transat.(Jan8 2019) that was on the website!! But that wasn't the case. Marie Josee Transat rep(very nice) said that she heard and see some papers that other people printed.So we were right,but couldn't do anything than send it to her supervisor! (Beach towels in room, separate check in, spa 10% discount etc..!) (Already talked to Air transat complain centre, but they said couldn't do anything also about the tour beiing late and not what it should be?? It's the tour operator not them. I said. We booked it thru AT rep. Not responsible at all!! ) If you need wifi, better arrange it @ home because it's $12 us per day.(3 days $25 us) They don't have it per hour. Also ATM machine is not working. Seem to have been like that for a while. Phone in your room or in the hotel lobby isn 't working either. So like other people saying isolated if something happens. They told us we have to update the whole system and can take another few years!! So make sure you have money and a phone that works with you. Wifi only works in Lobby, quality is bad. But is better early in the morning when not to many people are on it.We are not people that are to long on the phone, just checking in with Family how they are. For the rest we enjoyed the beautiful resort with the howler monkeys, Macaws, Coatis and plenty of birds. Thought to see dolphins or Whales but that is only in the rainy season.Went on the tour from air transat Tortuga BBQ, sorry don't spend your money $82 us p.p ($80 from Barcelo itself) We would leave @ 8 am, Became 10:30 am. Would go by bus first and than small part by boat. Didn't happen. They where late because they picked up people by boat from Montezuma(were the trip is originated.We found out later. And only $60 us) And we got picked up(small speed boat) on the beach with 27 people on board together. We were waiting in the lobby and had to rush to the beach? On the island you have to pay for a beach chair $10 us) and if you want to walk on the island it's another $6 us.. They call it a BBQ.. You get a plate of food (Rice, Salad,and a small piece of meat/Fish)watermelon and pineapple to share.Were back @ the resort 3:10 pm.It's hard to get off the resort because of the limited tours they have.(even there website says different!!) And they are very pricey for what it's worth.There is a small town Tambor and they have a tour company. We heard they are very good? We got a tour from the island because we know someone that have a house in Los delphines. Complex next to Barcelo. We had a great time. Went also to Curu park ($15us p.p) saw different kind of monkeys, birds and butterflies. But it can be a hit or miss. (tour thru AT is $78 ) Room is okay, should pay little more attention there with cleaning.Also the washrooms around the pool area need more attention.And most important restaurants! They put more attention on things less important.(Pressure washing the outsides from the offices and entertainment area ..) Steak restaurant is okay, not great. We loved the sushi restaurant. Edwin was great. Very nice. The 3th time we went we had another waiter, and we weren't allowed to have a soup and edamame together, he told us we were on a limit?? Buffet restaurant Ericka,Sandra, was very nice and attentive, also Nino the first few days.Than he became a little to touchy. Bar was next to the entertainment and do they entertain the children!! Screams, so it was difficult to talk to each other.( Maby get a wall in between:>)But we had very great bar tenders. Yeudi, Maria,Marina were doing there best with English(when we could hear them:>) And we were trying some Spanish words. Because every one complain about that they all speak Spanish, but that's Costa Rica.And over 90% of tourist are Latinos. Still they have some people as what I said will be able to help you If you need someone that can help you (for us English speaking people) go to either Hendry or Judy. They did help us with some of the issues we had. Marie- Josee (Air Transat rep)was very nice, but wasn't there to much. She had to go up and down to Jaco beach. There was Alexander but not much help?? Flag always red?? Was because they didn't want to be responsible if something happens?? So no kayaks or boogie boards available(we were there 2 wks) For the rest the weather was beautiful and we did enjoy the food. Yes like more people say, repeated.But there was plenty of it and lots of fruits. Than we had to check out @ 7 am to get the mini van @ 7:30! To have a flt in Liberia @ 4pm. We were 5 hours before our flight arrives on the airport. They say we have to leave early for the construction. There was construction and the roads are partly very bad driving (1 1/2hr). But even with that we were 5 hrs early?? Nowhere to sit, before you check in. 3hrs before is when check in starts! They were nice enough to check us in a little earlier. Prices on the airport are very expensive We know they always are, but this was ridiculous. So if you can take something from the hotel. Anyways if you like remote and still some "real" Costa Rican vibe go. The people are very nice, and the people that work in the resort will do there best to get you a great vacation. Only 2 more things: people don't touch the food with your hands,but with they utensils what are there! Eat as much as you want, but do finish your plate! And smokers please discard your cigarette buts in the garbage provided for them. Not on the beach were it takes more than 10 years to dissolve!!! Have a great time and enjoy the nature:>

    “Another disaster of a 5 start”

    Checked in, no WiFi unless you pay $20 per day and that only works in lobby. Went to room no towels in bathroom, went to front desk as our phone didn't work, spoke to front desk they said they would send some up, decided hey there's a pool let's jump in, getting dark out now, seemed like every third light in pool was burnt out. Went to get towels for the pool, no towels again 45 min wait. Eat a hamburger, went back to room, still no towels, plus we started to unpack and put our clothes away open drawers to find garbage and chocolate in pieces in drawers, moved bed to the wall to find a hair elastic full of hair under bed, tried calling front desk again and phone still didn't work. Now a bit upset cause we just paid close to $600US for this place for 2 nights, I march to front desk and ask for the manager, no manager available only front desk guy, I explain my dissatisfaction with this place. He says he understands and sends for the cleaning team to clean the room, recommends that I speak to customer service, I asked him to please point me in the direction, oh its closed, great. So now I have to wake up extra early on my vacation to meet them at 8 am I requested the general manager to be present as this is now beyond just a front desk manager issue. I get back to room and after 10 min the cleaning lady arrives and asks if this garbage was there when we came in, I said yes she says because she cleaned the room earlier with a tone of attitude, I said look here are the pictures, I'm not here to get cause trouble just want what I'm paying for. She cleans drawers leaves towels and leaves. Went downstairs to watch the evening show, had to use the washroom went to the public washroom in lobby where to be honest after I finished I was pleasantly surprised to find out the toilet does not flush, lol. Would I ever recommend this place? Not a Chance. I will never bring my family to this place again. Can't wait for my meeting tomorrow, although I feel that it's not going to go anywhere. Seems like Barcelo has let the ball drop on this resort. Tomorrow, now that I see what this place has become, I will just close my eyes deep breath and enjoy no snow. At least that's one positive. After having to make reservations for 1 of 2 restaurants (a common practice for resorts) we arrived at 8pm we were seated promptly and handed our menus. One Filet Mignon ordered as per the menu, one Ribeye steak, one Surf and Turf... Asked our friendly waiter what the side was for the Ribeye... He said French Fries... Lol. I almost fell out of my chair, the Filet Mignon said it came with a mushroom sauce... Knowing our luck we asked if it was made with real mushrooms... We were told yes, Portobello mushrooms... Ok, now we are talking... Nope... A nasty sauce with one slice of a canned mushroom, lol. Ok surf and turf... 3 shrimp with tails on and a piece of meat that was honestly 2 inches squared. We decided to ask the chef to come out and ask him if he was told to cook a filet Mignon like this... Did I mention that there was no bacon and the meat wasn't a real piece of meat, meat yes but was like a hamburger pressed in the shape of the filet Mignon, after some chatting with the chef he agreed that this was not filet Mignon... At first he didn't realize that in our party was a trained chef... Once we told him he caved and told us the truth. The Ribeye showed up with no French fries (thank goodness) but with 3 small potatoes well picture 1/4 potato cut in three. The picture of a chair as you can see had 2 sharp pieces sticking out which stabbed my dad when he tried to pull his chair closer to the table. After a 10 min chat with the chef he wanted to make it right, kudos. He offered us a shrimp platter... He said he would send it to our room... Never arrived. By this point all we could do was laugh cause obviously Barcelo has no clue what has happened to their precious 5 star resort. Unfortunately not even a thank you at the check out. I fully do not recommend this place to anyone. Where has customer service gone?

    “Good - but pay attention to the details”

    The location is great, as this is a large property, with a nice beach on a sheltered bay, good restaurants & bars, pools, & entertainment . There are things to watch out for with the Barcelo versions of all-included - unless you go for the extra $$ PREMIUM level you don't get: a room phone (makes it hard for medical emergencies & room service) - room service - free wi-fi - premium beverages - limited a la carte restaurant access. They seem to want to nickel & dime you for everything, which makes you wonder why anyone would call it "all-inclusive". You need a lawyer to figure what that really means here.
