“Staying at this supposedly five star hotel”

We were assigned a room with a safe box that did not work properly. Sewer water was coming up from the bath tub drainage and the bath tub was filling up. As soon as you waked out of the room you could feel a sewer scent in the air around the premises. It was disgusting. We were moved to another room but administration did register our new room number. I was once approached by a security guard as I was entering our room and asked me what I was doing that room that was vacant and who was inside. We were asked over the phone on three different mornings who we were and why we were occupying that room, when we were checking out and under what name the reservation was made. Service was not good. Once our towels were taken away for washing (we did not put then on the bath tub floor) and we asked the front desk for clean ones. They never came until next day and we have to use the hand towels after showering instead. There were no swimming pool towels available when we asked for with the excuse that they had full occupancy and many guests and they were using a lot of them. Interesting… when I realized the safety was not working properly and I could not open it after putting some values in it, a man came to help me and open it with a long screwdriver that he stuck in a hole under the safety and open it in no time. It did not feel secure to place my values there. Food very poor and we have to wait for some time before we could have a table assigned to us. Almost every time we walked to our table I was not ready and full of dirty cutlery and dishes used by the previous guests. We were poorly waited upon. I once walk to a bar and ask for a fruit drink. There was a man there who told us “it is not open yet”; I thought he was a security guard. I knew it opened at nine and it was already nine o’clock on my watch. Anyway I thought, my watch might be fast. After sometime the guy transformed himself in something else like a transformer and smiling ask what I wanted. I later checked my watch with the official costarrican time, and my watch was correct. On checking out we stand in line front of a check out sign. After some time they advised us that the checking out was being made some were else and pretended that we had to start the line again. After checking out they were supposed to give us a pass for the security gate that everything was alright with us (that we had paid everything) but they did not. When we arrived at the gate they pretended that we backed up with our car for over half a mile to the parking lot and walk to the front desk to ask for it. Another person from our family group ran the errand. We were illegally retained. And I could go on and on but I want to make this review “short”.

    “Beautiful location”

We had a nice time at your resort. Would have been more enjoyable if people didn't reserve poolside seating at 6AM and then come out to use it at 9AM, while the rest of us that came out at 8AM either sat in the grass or had to go to the sand.

“Large resort with lots of things to do and below average buffets”

This resort was remodeled in 2012 and in very good condition. It is not a fancy place, but lots of wide open spaces, plenty of activities (large pool, entertainment staff, bird sanctuary, gym, volleyball, futbol, nightly shows, game room, etc), and a long beach front (which unfortunately is not a great walking beach nor swimming because of the large waves). The rooms were clean but modest. I think the picture below says a lot - crooked, dated, dirty, faded, warped, mass produced junk - two of these "decorated" the walls. Family friendly (this was the highlight for me)! The food was edible and plentiful but so disappointing. Little flavor, little variety, gray! Drinks were made with DISCO alcohol - a brand that must specialize in flavoring water to mimic the booze. One of the pools was shut down. The howler monkeys, birds, iguanas and sneaky squirrels provided a lot of entertainment. Lots of potential here, and I had a nice stay, but a bit disappointing. One more thing: there are 2 "premium" restaurants. You have to get in hour long line at 8am to make reservations (steak & fish or Japonese) - the food was much better here but the restaurants were always "FULL" and not accepting reservations - in reality I never saw any of them more than half full. A needless line to wait in - I think it shows managements view of its guests... we need you here, but we don't want you to come back.

    “Mixed feelings”

While reserving for this resort earlier this year I had read good and bad reviews about this place and after the fact I'm somewhere in the middle. Cheap airfare to San Jose was the initial reason to go to Costa Rica and I chose Barcelo Tambor as a fit for my family. Most of the negative reviews I had read were written by newlyweds or old folks, whom this hotel is not cut out for. This is a family resort with lots of kids. The room negatives: Old noisy AC registers, refrigerator and ceiling fan. If you want to stay cool you will have some noise. The room positives: Clean. Comfortable beds Hotel location: Isolated, in the middle of nowhere. You can venture out, but be warned that if you drive to Montezuma or Santa Teresa area beaches you'll face dirt roads with huge pot holes, slippery mud going uphill and tiny one-way slab concrete no-railing bridges with no prior warning that they exist. Hotel food: The regular buffet is like bland hospital food. If you stay more than 2 nights you get the opportunity to reserve a meal at the Sushi or Steak and Seafood restaurants which have limited seating are much nicer experiences. Beer: They only serve Imperial which is like a Heineken light Staff: Very nice and helpful The grounds and pools are well kept. Activities: My wife took part in archery, dance and water aerobics, though the activities are not scheduled or advertised well. The staff just rounds up guests 10 minutes prior to the class by walking around the pool area. World Cup viewing was great as they put the games on a huge projection screen in the convention hall. Beer keg, coffee, juices and pastries included.

    “Thanks Dayana A!”

Great family vacation and extremely hospitable environment. The staff of enthusiastic event leaders is what really set the trip apart from other experiences ESPECIALLY Dayana and Yendri whose energy will make anyone smile and enjoy themselves. Nonstop activities throughout the day, and nightly events will bring laughs and are appropriate for all ages. Well worth every penny and highly recommended for anybody looking for an all inclusive getaway in a tropical paradise.
