    “Skip this resort”

We recently traveled to Costa Rica for two weeks, we traveled around and spent 4 nights as the Barcelo Tambor. I wish we would have skipped the all inclusive and stayed longer in Montezuma. The room was not clean, there were multiple long black hairs on the bathroom floor that was there our entire stay just maybe moved a little bit. Once house keeping didn't even come. Then the other three days they never left clean towels I had to go to the front desk every day for towels. The food is not good just a buffet on repeat. We did eat at the Rancho restaurant one night and the food there was no better. The entertainment is only good if you speak Spanish, they are geared to their Spanish speaking guests, so it got a little old. There is a bar by the reception and the service in this bar was excellent, by far the best part of the resort. The beach was nice and it was not crowded, we had no trouble getting a beach chair and there was six of us. I would spend the extra money and stay someplace else.

    “Lots of food”

The entry to the property gives you a good idea of what's to come. It looks impressive - flags line the drive, the grounds look great, it looks inviting. But the flags are faded and should be replaced. Check-in is easy. In fact, perhaps because I'm a member of MyBarcelo (I recommend it - free sign-up, free internet, a $15 bonus, and early check-in), we could check in at 10:30 am and enjoy lunch. Room ready at 3. But a stop in the lobby restroom revealed what could be a '70s bus terminal restroom. There's lots of potential here, but lots of room for improvement. Staff seemed very young and not particularly knowledgable. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Weekends can get very crowded, with long lines, but mid week is great. Don't miss the area behind the spa, with the scarlet macaw sanctuary and plenty of howler monkeys. There's a butterfly pavilion there too, but there wasn't a butterfly in sight. The rooms are nice enough - although furniture looks worn and ready for an update. The bathroom needs help - tub (nice to have a tub!) had hair in it and yellow stains. The adjustable shower head kept falling off. The ceiling panels were misaligned and had mold on them. Toilet paper cheap. On the beach you have to cross a bunch of rocks to get to the sandy area, but there are plenty of chairs and plenty of shade. How can they still make you pay for internet? We had it free, but it only works right next to the front desk, and you have to sign in everytime you use it. Pools were nice enough - but close at 7 PM! Why? The big attraction is the all-inclusive food. As you might expect, the buffets are a mixed bag. Hot food not really hot. Little that really stands out. Deserts were not impressive (except for the tres leches cake, and ice cream is available at each meal). There are two specialty restaurants. Forget about them the day you arrive. You have to get in a (long) line at 8 AM for reservations (there's got to be a better way!). There's a sushi restaurant, but since we would only have one dinner we chose the Rancho steakhouse/seafood place. Looks nice, and the menu looked attractive - but the waiter informed us that only the main course was available off the menu. The rest was on a very unimpressive buffet line. My whole red snapper was tasty - but came with fake mashed potatoes (really?!), and cold, undercooked veggies. Very little meat on the fish. My wife's seafood spaghetti seemed better. No towels in our room when we got there. They came around later and passed out a couple sodas, juice cans, and water bottles. Nice touch - but it felt slip shod. A nice display of them in the room with a welcome note would have made such a difference. It's those little things that make you realize this is a 3 star hotel with beautiful grounds and lots of food.

    “Average hotel with beautiful sunrises”

The hotel is located about a mile from the Tambor airport. I would highly suggest taking a domestic flight as opposed to the 5+ hour shuttle from the international airport. The hotel is situated on a very rocky dark sand beach. Most people hang out at the pool as the ocean water isn't very clear. That being said, the beach is pretty empty. The hotel staff doesn't speak much English so freshen up on your Spanish. Most of the entertainment is aimed at Spanish speaking guest. The grounds are well maintained and lots of animal life (iguanas, howler monkeys, parrots, squirrels, raccoons) The room is fairly basic. It does include a fridge, coffee maker, and blow dryer. As mentioned in some of the other post, the water pressure can vary. I thought it might depend on the time of day, but it was random. There was a shortage of towels on each day. You were limited to your (2)bath towels and a bathroom hand towel. Occasionally, we would have a bath towel animal on the bed that provided wash cloths. Otherwise, we made do with what we were provided. We found the ice machine on our second to last day located by the clinic. This would have been nice to known earlier. Dining/Food was repetitive. The buffet food was the same day in and day out. Lots of options, but nothing appealing. Needless to say I didn't gain weight on the trip. The rolls were fresh and very good. The pool bar snacks were a combination of fruit and often times chips and salsa. The salsa was very good! We tried the steak house one night and I found a huge bug/fly cooked in my meal. The filet wasn't to American standards. Just know that and go in with lower expectations. Overall, I would say the hotel is basic and clean. Just don't expect a 4 star hotel.

    “Large rooms and beautiful grounds”

We spent four nights at the Barcelo Tambor. The reviews posted here are accurate and we picked this resort because of the price. As non-spanish visitors we did have issues with communication with some staff, as well we found the crowds around the pool and in the buffet restaurant too noisy and rude. The grounds are beautiful and our room was very large with a nice terrace; however the water pressure was horrible and at times you could not take a shower. We did find the staff at the customer service desk excellent and they worked really hard to get us on our Tortuga Island trip during our stay. The meal at the steakhouse and our server were a highlight!
