Reviews of the Barceló Lanzarote Active Resort hotel

One side of the road is phenomenal, the other, not even 3 star.

We were blown away by the reception on arrival and we’re very excited to spend a week at Barcelo as a family of four, but after being taken over the road and up 3 stories to a dirty room with no air conditioning, we had a rough first night to say the least.

Our holiday was rescued by Beatrice and the customer experience team. They moved us over the road to the ‘main’ hotel and from that point on we had a fantastic holiday. The food, atmosphere, staff, pools and most importantly the rooms on the main side of the hotel deserve their 4 star rating. Sadly, the other side of the road wouldn’t scrape 3 stars.

There is work ongoing, so hopefully one day both sides of the road will be able to accommodate the same experience but we wouldn’t book again and risk ending up on the wrong side of the road.

Thanks to Felipe, Carlos and Beatrice for rescuing our holiday!

I would highly recommend booking direct and requesting a room on the ‘coast’ ‘beach’ or ‘main’ side of the hotel (we heard it referred to as all 3) to ensure you enjoy your stay!

A definite recommendation - we had a great stay.

Just got back from a week and had a great holiday. We had a Junior Suite on the Active side of the hotel, which was spacious and clean. Beds and pillows were really comfortable. Toiletries were provided to include toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, body lotion, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. The hotel, across two sites, was huge. Part of our first week coincided with the UK half term, so it was very busy and sunloungers were hard to find on the active side but as the weekend passed and the resort became quieter, there were usually ones available. We found the food to be good. Plenty of variety and something to suit all tastes. Entertainment around the pool was good fun, but not over the top, and we found all of the entertainment team friendly. We didn't have any young children in our group so can't comment on that aspect. Pool bar very convenient for the pool with hot and cold drinks available and snacks. Wasn't necessarily clear what was available on AI, but we muddled through and it only took a day to get familiar. The Olympic pool is a bonus if you're a swimmer and only 4 euro for an hours swim. If you're into triathlon, the free IronGuest mini triathlon they hold on a Wednesday morning each week is a must. 300m swim, 10k stationary bike and then a 1.2 mile run. Was great fun and even if you don't do triathlon, have a go. The staff running it made it a really great event and one of the unexpected highlights of the holiday, plus you get a free swimming hat and t-shirt!! The hotel is a little out of the way in terms of getting around - about a 30-40 min walk into Costa Teguise centre, but there is a bus stop and taxi rank right outside the hotel and both are cheap - taxi was 4.5 euros and the bus about 1.25 euros per person. Our tip if you enjoy an evening drink sat outside, would be to use the bar in hotel closest to the seafront as the outside seating area is more protected from the wind than sitting in the plaza. Evening entertainment was a bit hit and miss. We saw two shows whilst there - a magic show and an acrobatics one. Both of those were very good. At 9.30pm each evening they have a singer, but whilst they were all good singers, they didn't really have much stage presence so didn't make for a great "show", with the exception of the singer on our last night (4 Jun) but unfortunately we had an early start so weren't able to stay up late to fully enjoy it.

All in all we had a really lovely time at the hotel and would definitely go back. We found all of the staff friendly and polite and the whole resort was kept tidy and clean all of the time.

Great stay – royal level made all the difference

We had a great experience overall and would definitely recommend this hotel, particularly the Royal Level option, as long as it’s not during school holidays. We’d happily return.
Royal Level & Food
We stayed on an all-inclusive Royal Level package, which we would highly recommend. The Royal restaurant offered a more peaceful and elevated dining experience than the main buffet, which we also tried. While the food leaned heavily towards fish (common for island buffets), breakfast was excellent, with plenty of sweet and savoury options so we could eat something different every day.
The Royal pool bar served freshly prepared snacks, which looked much better than those at the main pool bar, although we didn’t try those ourselves. Cocktails were a real highlight – some of the best we’ve had at an all-inclusive, made with name-brand spirits and lots of variety. We especially liked the Royal Lounge in the evenings, which was quieter and more comfortable than the main bar.
The Royal Level pools were heated and a perfect temperature – refreshing without being freezing, which made a real difference to how much we used them.
Facilities & Activities
The Royal Level offered a few poolside classes, and we really enjoyed the ceramics and art sessions in the afternoons. A major highlight was Marta’s yoga, which is only available to Royal Level guests. She was patient, encouraging, and helped us feel so relaxed. The timings in the pamphlet were incorrect, but reception gave us the correct schedule. It was the perfect start to the day and something we’d do every morning if available.
The gym was well-equipped and clearly popular. I joined a stretch class that was open to all guests, which was a nice option, though a little short at just 25 minutes.
Room
Our room was spacious, clean on arrival, and quiet, with a lovely sea and pool view. We appreciated the proper super king bed (not two singles pushed together) and the double sink. Daily housekeeping was minimal – mostly towel changes and bed-making – but we would have liked to see the floors or balcony swept during the stay.
Service & Atmosphere
Check-in was slow, with queues almost every time we passed reception. As we arrived after 9pm, the Royal check-in desk was closed, so we had to wait longer.
The overnight snack bar, which opens at 10:30pm, was often empty by 11pm and only had ham and cheese sandwiches. It would have been nice to see fruit, pastries, or other light snacks as well.
Sunbeds & Families
We hadn’t realised there were no adults-only areas – that was our oversight. During the first half of our stay, the atmosphere was quiet with plenty of sunbeds available. However, the second half coincided with England’s half term, and the hotel became much busier.
It became hard to find sunbeds or parasols unless we were out before 10am, and by the end of the week, guests were queueing from 9am for the 9:30 pool opening. We really hope the hotel invests in more parasols as they were very limited.
For adults without children, we’d definitely recommend visiting outside of school holidays for a more relaxing experience.
Location & Extras
Costa Teguise is about a 40-minute walk away and doesn’t offer much in terms of sightseeing. If you're planning to explore, this may not be the best base. Luckily, the hotel had plenty to keep us entertained on-site.
Mini golf cost €8 per person for a round that lasted only 15 minutes. This felt overpriced and is something we believe should be included for Royal Level guests
