“Nice infrastructure, good service but nothing outstanding”

Located close to the Tambor airport, make this hotel easy to reach, unfortunately the hotel do not have a pick-up service, so you need to talk with the people outside of the airport to find transportation to the hotel, the distance is short but the rate always is 6 dls, when you reach the hotel, you will see the gardens and infrastructure is well maintain, depending of the time that you arrive, you can be on the line for long time waiting to make the check-in, the rooms are comfortable, good bed, you will have a good resting, we stayed in a room with ocean view, the location was great, easy to access the beach and far from the noise of the discotheque, the rooms are clean mostly only what you can see, nothing in deep, we found an old plastic bottle under the bed, that is a clear message the cleaning is not in deep. The overall service is good, some places are short of personal, and makes you to line for long periods waiting for being attended, narrowing down the places, during the day you have the ¨Palenque¨ is a snack bar, the chef who prepare the Hamburgers and hot dogs, is quite nice, and the rest of the personal is helpful. By other hand the bar on the pool is impossible, most of the people sits there when the bar opens till almost night, that makes impossible for the rest of the clients to visit it, also all the place around the bar you will see a lot of drunk people, that makes the rest of the customer uncomfortable, mostly because there are many children’s around. The beach is nice, but definitely I recommend to visit the hotel in low season, you will have the beach for you, and try to visit it during the morning when the tide is low, otherwise will be dangerous because when the tide is high the level reach the highest level of the sand and this is all rocks. The main restaurant ¨El Tucan¨ is completely open, and sometimes are too many flys around you, the food is average, sometime the options are short but you can find definitely something to eat, but you need to be aware many people do not follow the right procedure to serve their own food and can contaminate the rest of the food. The service is good, they make a huge effort to serve the customers quick despite the huge amount of people. The best service that we found was on the ¨Cocobolo¨ bar, especially from Sergio, such a nice guy, this is the place to hang out in the night, I will recommend to avoid the liquors from the house, all of them are not from good quality, you need to pay for any other drink, they have available only one type of beer, is draft beer, that is OK, better if you request it ¨Michelada¨ with lemon and salt, is very good. From there you can see the shows, for us the dancers make a good effort, but you can see some movements are not coordinated, but most of the shows are entertained, the highest point is their costumes, was amazing. The worst point is the entertainer, was disrespectful, vulgar and boring. For every two night you can visit their special restaurants ¨Mijako¨ or ¨El Rancho¨, what is crazy to me is you must be on the customer service desk before 8 A.M and again make the line to make the reservation and that is the only way to do it. After the ¨Cocobolo¨ bar close, the restaurant became a kind of discotheque till 1 AM or 3 AM in the weekends. The Wi-Fi is not free, is expensive and the connection is terrible, also the speed of the internet, we tried from the lobby and was imposable to use, will be better if you buy a prepaid phone chip before go. In a personal opinion and like a recommendation to the hotel, they should rise the standards, many visitor have some inappropriate behaviors and this make looks bad to the hotel.

    “Barcelo Tambor tropical retreat”

If you are looking for a holiday retreat that still embodies the unspoiled beauty of Costa Rica, as well as low-key luxury and comfort with good service, try the Barcelo on Tambor Beach in Costa Rica on the Nicoya Peninsula. In comparison with mega-resorts that offer a huge variety of restaurants, amenities and activities, etc., this is a small resort but it boasts many features of the best of the Barcelo hotel/resort chain. We have stayed here many times in the last decade and every time we are nourished by the tranquil tropical gardens and flowers, the restful colonial style suites and rooms, the reasonably good food and service, the relatively small number of guests, and the secluded bay with some waves and beach almond trees providing shade. The resort was renovated in recent years and unfortunately some of the changes were disappointing: they removed the lovely tropical print bedspreads that made the rooms so "exotic"; all of the buildings were repainted in red with white trim while they used to each be different soft tropical shades, the seafood restaurant on the beach closed and a bland Japanese restaurant was opened, the little casino was closed and replaced with a children's game area, and part of the pool was modified to be a kiddy pool with fountain. Direct trails to a "Parque Naturelle" were closed too, cutting off one of the resort's unique features. Dining options are limited to the main buffet, the pool snack bar, the Japanese restaurant, and the beachfront El Rancho Steakhouse (by reservation if you stay several nights). Tambor is rather secluded, so don't look for shopping outside the hotel, or a town immediately outside the gate. Getting to Tambor requires flying to Liberia and then taking a long (interesting) drive plus the ferry across the Gulf; or flying to San Jose, driving a long way, or taking the regional Sansa Air hop to the little airstrip adjacent to the resort. This is an interesting resort as it attracts Americans and some Europeans, and also (mostly) Costa Ricans. The changes in recent years have been in the direction of making it a much more couples, and family- and children-focused resort. But we still love the gardens and the bird life. Every day around 4 pm you can set your watch to it: flocks of free, wild scarlet macaws fly into the large trees at the resort. There is a macaw breeding and release program adjacent to the resort and many of the birds one sees were bred and released from the facility. You can also see brown pelicans, roseate spoonbills, tiger herons, sanderlings, magnificent frigate birds, green parakeets, and bananaquits here. If you love bird life and tropical environments, and you are not looking for noisy nightlife and large crowds, sample the "pura vida" still available at Tambor.

    “Family celebration”

We left home early in the morning to take the Ferry to Paquera, then drove to the hotel, to find a very beautiful place, very delicious food, nice snacks and great outdoor activities. I saw some of the bad reviews the hotel had, mostly related to the employees, I can honestly say they are all very friendly! The room was good, enough to accommodate a family of 4. Lots of things to do.

    “Nothing special”

It's decent if you want to lay by the pool. The beach in front of the resort isn't one you'll want to swim at. The food was average, nothing special. There's not much to do near the hotel besides golf. I went to escape from the city and relax and it was perfect for that, but I wouldn't go for any other reason.
