“Some Good Qualities but service needs major work.”

As we arrived at the Occidental Hotel, the front staff had no welcoming approach. They all looked at us like we were lost and did not even say hello. After walking around asking what we need to do, we were told to go upstairs to the first club and speak with the Premium Lounge. When we went upstairs, we were greeted by both Omar and Alfonzo who were extremely nice and the bartender handed us a very refreshing passion fruit drink. Alfonzo spent an hour with me booking all our events for the next few days and did an excellent job doing so. I hope he runs that place one day because everyone can take lessons from him. Anyway, the next night my wife and I with another couple were having drinks at the front desk bar. The bartenders did not know much English as we were talking about buying a bottle of wine. As we were talking with the bartender, Marvin, and having a drink, two Hispanic couples came up to the bar and ordered a drink. The wife started to yell at my wife and tell her she was going to beat her up over nothing just because she thought we said something while no one was talking to them. Marvin, the bartender, even seen the incident and came around the bar and told them to leave and us to stay. The security came in and immediately grabbed my arm. When I told them not to grab me, he immediately grabbed my other arm. The other security guard had to tell him to not grab the guest. I walked out of the bar area into the lobby to get away from the other couple when the front desk person, MARIO, who was not even in the bar, pointed at me and stated that I was the problem. He said he was writing up a report of what happened with a report from the staff and the other "Hispanic" couple. He did not care nor want mine, my wives, or the other couples statement. I NEVER pull the racist card, and honestly never have thought I would need to, we are a white couple and for the first time felt very discriminated against because we did not know Spanish and were not Latino. I explained to him that this was wrong and that I want to call the embassy to bring out someone that is fair. I am a United States Marine, and wanted to speak with someone that knew better English and could look at both sides and see what the problem was. Mario said, he would not call the embassy but he will call the police instead, I told him I did not want the police because it would be the same problem and they would not be able to understand me neither. He did not care and said the police would be there in 50 minutes and had us wait. Of course, when the police got there, they knew no English and Mario gave them the report, in Spanish, after telling us he would give the report in English to Gabriel, the other front desk guy, and he could translate. He did not do this. The police then left and I went to bed. I asked MARIO again to call the embassy, and he said no. The next day I went upstairs and explained the situation to Omar. Omar said he would talk to the other couples that were involved, including the ones with us that we met in the bar, for a whole story. We then went on our way and did our tours. I will end this long story with this, I extremely enjoyed the activity staff, the tour guides, and the white-water rapids, horseback riding, ATV rides, Kayaking, zip lining, coffee tour, and everything away from the hotel was awesome and the people were great, but the front desk staff, including MARIO, was extremely rude. Every morning after that when we walked in the front doors, we got crap service. No good morning, no help, we even asked one girl to call down to the security gate to see if our driver from our tour was there and she rolled her eyes saying he wasn’t. Come to find out, the tour van was down there waiting on us for 30 minutes with 15 other guests from other hotels. They were not happy with me and my wife and we apologized to everyone on the bus and told them what happened. I hate to say this but we will not be staying here again, but if you do decide to stay and explore the activities and the town, make sure that you get the premium level were the staff are 5 stars and some of the greatest people you will meet. When you get here, ask for Alfonzo or Omar.

    “A Wonderful Week!”

What an incredible place! I cannot begin to tell you what a fabulous week my husband and I had at Occidental Papagayo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica in August 2017. Having studied all of the reviews and looked at hundreds of photos on both the Barcelo website and posted on social media by previous guests before we booked, I really thought that I knew what would be waiting for us. However, from the moment we arrived, this resort exceeded our expectations! Panoramic views of the Gulf of Papagayo greet you as you step into the lobby better than any photo can ever show. We were Premium Level guests and we felt it was well worth the extra money. The check-in process was smooth and welcoming in the Premium Level lounge by Alonso and Omar and these two employees were gracious, thoughtful and so very helpful all week long. The grounds are beautifully maintained and rich with tropical vegetation and wildlife from Green Parrots to Carraccas, Howler monkeys, raccoons and Iguanas. The room we had was in building 8. It was clean and spacious with far reaching views over the Gulf and even to the volcanoes beyond. We never tired of that amazing view all week. Pamela worked hard cleaning our room and bottled water and beer was also delivered daily to our fridge. We so enjoyed the food in all of the restaurants. The buffet breakfast offered a wide range of choice from pancakes, French toast and donuts to a cooked American or Costa Rican style breakfast with omelets and eggs made to order. The wide range of fresh fruit available at every meal was mouth watering. The food in the Italian and the Oriental restaurants was of top notch quality and the deserts are to die for! The service in all restaurants and bars was excellent. Thank you so much to Alonso, Harry, Richard and Ingrid who served us at most evening meals and to Mauricio and Katherine in the Buffet. Must also mention Jennifer in the Premium Level Lounge who made great cocktails and kept us entertained on many evenings before dinner. You ALL made our vacation!! This review wouldn’t be complete without the mention of two other things…. The entertainment and the shuttles. Occidental Papagayo offers a wide range of activities all managed by a wonderful group of hardworking people. Kayaking in the bay or doing yoga on the beach with Manuel, pool volleyball, sunset walks with Michael, cocktail making or water aerobics were all choices on the daily activities list which added to our enjoyment of the resort. There was a disco that started at 9:30 pm every night, although the dance floor is small and it was generally geared to the younger crowd. Our only disappointment with the resort was that live music was only offered on three nights of the six we were there. On those occasions there was quite an audience - Steven’s guitar and violin playing was wonderful. We really missed having something to do after dinner on the remaining nights and I know several other couples we met felt the same. I hope the management will change this policy as even during low season guests like to have some kind of entertainment to relax to before or after dinner when on vacation. As you can see in all the photographs, this resort is built on the side of the mountain and therefore there are lots of steps from the pool up to the restaurants and lobby area and from the lobby to many of the rooms. There are shuttles that drive around picking up guests if you need it, but you may have to wait a while. All in all we had a truly memorable vacation. It was great value for money, the resort was beautiful, the staff were exceptionally hard working and welcoming and the food was excellent. We will certainly be returning to Occidental Papagayo very soon!

“Very Good to Excellent Place to Stay - Deserves 4.5 Stars”

I stayed at the Occidental Papagayo during August 2017. Upon my arrival, including the resort shuttle that took us from the Liberia airport to the resort (on time), I was either extremely satisfied to surprised at how well run this place was. Directly after arriving, we were brought upstairs and spoke to Omar, a very nice young man, who checked us in and helped us get comfortable and understand what all of our perks were. I will recommend to every single person that reads this post: Please make sure you have access to the Premium Level (you may have to pay more for your room but it is absolutely worth it and you are treated as such). You will have access to an exclusive lounge fit with appetizers and an open bar. The bartender, Jennifer, is very nice and makes great drinks. We went there every night before and after our meals. We were pleasantly surprised to have a beautiful view from our room. If you can, make sure you stay in building 8. Your view will be spectacular. There are a lot of steps in this resort, and the walk to the beach is a relatively short walk, but don't expect the beach to be 3 steps away. If you have knee or hip problems, this probably won't be the place for you. There will be monkeys, raccoons, iguanas, and all kinds of birds around. Once you get down to the beach, look out for either Roberto or Ramon. Roberto will help you find fun things to do. We jet skied, went on a catamaran ride, and rode ATVs with Ramon all through working with Roberto. He was very nice and didn't try to haggle us. He wanted us to have a good time while we were there. The beach is very nice when the tide is low. The sand is on the rocky side (sorry, no sandcastles here), but the water is pretty clear in the afternoon and there are plenty of shade trees if you don't want to sit in the sun. Overall, it was an older crowd that stayed here. We, around 30 years old, were one of the youngest couples there. All the people we met, however, were very nice. It's pretty quiet here and there isn't a lot of unwanted noise. The pool is nice and they have activities to keep people engaged (bingo, dance class). The pool closes early but it also gets dark early so it didn't really phase us. It would have been nice to go for a night swim, but it wasn't a big deal. The Italian restaurant was on the average side. I had the salmon, which was ok. I wasn't expecting Gordon Ramsay-quality cuisine, so I was mostly satisfied. The Oriental restaurant was above average. I'll recommend to anyone that if they want to eat at either the Italian or Oriental, make a reservation ahead of time (even a day ahead of time). The buffet is above average to good, as they have a number of selections of different foods. Breakfast is best at the buffet. The room was pretty average, but if you are going to stay in your room for longer than 2 hours a day, you should not come to Costa Rica. A bed and a bathroom is all you should need, and you will get both here. And they keep it very clean and well stocked with plenty of towels, etc. The biggest complaint from our trip was that there wasn't a bottle opener for the wine we had ready in our room when we arrived.

    “Beautiful nature.”

The hotel has a very nice environment, the beach is beautiful, the sunset, ... There are plenty of activities like walking, cycling, snorkeling, kayaking and so on, so you have the chance to get to know the surrounding area keep yourself busy all the time. At least now they serve breakfast until 11am, this is something we value very much if you stay up until late or wake early for making activities. Most of the people is nice, like Rafa, "pull it" and the lady from the entertainment, also the guy in the premium level bar and the guy a lady serving you drinks at the swimming pool (both of them always smiling and nice). Some others don't like the lady from the premium level bar, and both of the concierge (they are not helpful at all). Getting bottled water and sugar free (for example for people with diabetes) beverages is hard and they don't have many. To the hotel fellows, you can complement the offer, with fresh fruit water. The dinner and lunch are average at the buffet, it is better in the Oriental restaurant. We had an issue with the food, we were polite and even discrete to inform the hotel and they tried to fix it, what it really bothered us the most was that along with the lady that was explaining the situation to us, the hotel sent someone behind us, to listen to it, and for a reason we do not really know. If you are foreigner you can stay here, and enjoy a little piece of Costa Rica, a nice beach full of nature.
