    “Stil amazing”

We came here 3 years ago when it was Occidental and were interested to see how much downhill it had gone under Barcelo as per some reviews . Well we are please to announce that it's even better than it was before . I didn't think it was possible that the standard of food could have improved but it has . Palazzo Ventanas Azea are just incredible . Spices which gets a bad rap from a lot of people was just fantastic. Whether you tip before during or after or even not at all doesn't seem to affect the amazing service you get everywhere in the resort from around the pool to each and everyone of the restarurants. But there is one thing ..... AMERICANS THIS IS NOT A PARTY HOTEL . There are a 100 party hotels left and right where you can sit in the pool get hammered and swear your head off all day long , abuse the girls and just generally show yourselves up . ( you Texans know who you are ). When did it ever become acceptable to bring your own speakers to the pool and blast your own music out regardless of who else is having a nice peaceful holiday. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!!

“Wonderful experience, we will be back!”

It rained 3 of the 5 days we were on vacation and it was still an amazing trip. The gym was awesome. We used lots of the pools around and they were all very well maintained and clean. My husband and I enjoyed a couples sports massage and only regret was that we didn't do it earlier in the week so we could've done it again!! All of the restaurants were amazing, food and service was fantastic. I would definitely come visit again!

    “Royal Hideaway - Quick Getaway”

So, the Hubby and I decided to take a quick getaway to the Riviera Maya over Memorial Day. With Barcelo Resorts recent purchase of the Occidental Resorts chain, we though we would visit the Royal Hideaway Playacar Resort. Located right in Playa del Carmen, it took about 40 minutes to arrive from the airport. The staff was immediately gracious and attentive. The lobby smelled fantastic! The room is absolutely lovely. Well appointed, comfortable, classy and with a spacious bathroom. Each building has it's own Concierge. When we sat down to make our dining reservations, he had already booked us the first night for the dinner show, just in case we would be interested in it. We also went ahead and made the dining reservations for the remainder of our stay. The grounds are well cared for and lush. The little pools or ponds through out the property seemed a bit odd..not sure what the point of them was as they weren't that attractive. The main pool is an infinity pool with beautiful views of the ocean. There is no swim up bar but the service around the pool is excellent. We never went long without a drink in our hand! For the most part, this is a very quiet, adult only resort. Not much in the way of loud music or activity...which was a nice change of pace. There was water aerobics each morning in the pool with some music. The food was excellent. The first night we went ahead with the dinner show. The food was absolutely wonderful! Filet mignon with fish...cooked perfectly. The show was rather pathetic. They danced well but the lip syncing was terrible...actually laughable at a certain point. The bar that is open later in the evening has billards, TV's and a patio area as well. There is some entertainment there each night. 1 of the evenings they had an Elvis impersonator....he sang much more than just Elvis hits and was pretty good! The Teppanyaki restaurant was good...standard show. The sushi here was so delicious though! I would have simply made a meal of that and skipped the teppan yaki. Our last night we ate at Las Ventanas and it was incredible. The presentation alone was worth it. Service was outstanding as well. The beach is beautiful white sand and the water was clear of seaweed. The only item we could really complain about was that our Concierge quit on our 2nd day there with no replacement...and no one to tell us. We felt a little "left on our own" for any services. So, we ended up dragging our luggage up to the lobby for departure. The week we visited there was a wide range in ages... honeymooners, middle aged and seniors. I had a friend go another time and said it was all seniors. The moral... plan a quiet getaway...it might even be a little boring! All in all, I would recommend the resort...but for the right client.

    “Great Trip ”

Second trip to Royal Hideaway. Always a great time. The staff was terrific especially the bellmen and pool crew. We enjoy the easy access to PDC. If you want to relax in peace this is the place for you, no loud music by the pool.

    “Very Relaxing. Quiet.”

We stayed at the end of April, first week in May. Greeted nicely by staff with champagne and wash cloths while we registered. Maybe a bit much for us. The grounds are "mostly" gorgeous but the huge pond water feature in the middle of the property takes away from the beauty. It needs some serious work! Unattractive, concrete, no greenery and appears broken in places that have rocks covering large holes. The size of the grounds also means constant work by landscapers, so there is mowing and noise if that matters to people. We enjoyed the quiet pool areas which we had to ourselves some occasions, but there is no regular butler service to them, so stock up on drinks at those pools. A little disappointed in not knowing that the poolside seating is reserved, and difficult to get, so we spent most of our time on the beach. Beach space is beautiful! We had our choice of shade or sun, but the wait staff does not visit often enough. We loved Luis, though. When he worked, we were taken care of! The "Hideaway" is no longer that, however. This resort is stuffed between two very large resorts with noise and music from both sides. It is clearly a very old resort that they are working on updating, and there are definitely areas that show its age. Christian was another staff member who really took care of us and also in charge of entertainment. Poolside entertainment was appropriate and fun. The theater show was tons of fun and quite impressive really for what it is. Kinda of reminded me of a cruise ship theater show. Evening time was quite mellow, so if you are going to stay here to party, expect to be disappointed. We really enjoyed the singing entertainment outside one of the bars(Bar Allegra I think) one evening too. The food, excellent!!! Absolutely no complaints and our favorite restaurant was Azia. Really, really good food. The beef tenderloin at the Grill was as good as any filet mignon I have ever had! Least favorite, Las Ventanas. The food a little too off the wall for us. The rooms, were clean and fresh. Nice furnishings and incredibly comfortable beds. A drippy broken air conditioner was fixed within the day it was reported. The refrigerator really is virtually useless, but if you keep the cabinet door open and the fridge not too overstocked, it will chill the drinks that are provided. This could easily be solved with ventilation in that cabinet, lattice instead of a door maybe or just keep the refrigerators out of the cabinet altogether. Also, tipping does get you taken care of better, regardless of this being an all inclusive. Overall a very nice stay and quite relaxing. Hope this helps someone!
