    “Beautiful golf course, disappointing room”

While attending a Rota high school class reunion, we decided to stay near Jerez for restaurants and activities. When I lived in Rota in the 60's there were no new suburban hotels like the Barcelo. After looking at photos on Barcelo web site, and reading TA reviews I booked us in a villa. Big mistake! They do not look anything like photos on web site. After waiting forever to check in (two employees at front desk- tons of golfers checking in) we were given a room card, and no bellman offered to help us with our bags, We drove over to villa area, to find out there is no designated parking lot- you park on the street, and have to drag your own bags up a hill to look for your villa. To our surprise the master bedroom was up a very steep 2 level set of stairs. My husband and I both have back issues, so I called the front desk to complain. After 20 minutes of calling over and over, someone finally called to say that a guy would come over in a golf cart to give us another key to a one level villa. He did not offer to help us with our suitcases. We found our new room, only to find the adjoining room door was locked, so we could not get into the living room/mini kitchen area to empty our suitcases. Had to wait an hour for housekeeping to come unlock the door. In the mean time, another guest opened the door and walked right in. We were all surprised. He apologized and left. Apparently the staff still had that villa marked as available, even though it was assigned to us an hour earlier. The room itself was very plain and severe. More like a nice cabin at a boy scout camp than an elegant villa. Extremely disappointed. TV reception poor. Sheets scratchy. AC was not cool. We walked over to the main hotel every morning for breakfast, which was 90% cheeses, meats, and white flour bread, rolls.... They did have a juice bar, and a few fruit options. There was a long line in front of the automated coffee machine each morning. They allow smoking in all outdoor eating areas, which was very annoying. One afternoon we went to the pool, which was a good size, but they did not have enough shade trees or covered areas, and NO tiki bar! We had to walk back up the steep hill to the main bar to get a cocktail. Had to convince them to give us plastic cups. No snacks, no music. Very boring! (The Barcelo Maya Palace in Mexico is the opposite of this hotel-gorgeous pools, great service, beautiful restaurants..). Speaking of the main bar. They do not know how to make American cocktails. If you don't drink gin and tonic you are out of luck. I went up to the bar to see if they had the ingredients for a Margarita or Manhattan, and tried to speak to the bartender several times. He did not speak English. Every time a man walked up, after I was already there, the bartender immediately asked them what they needed, totally ignoring me. No waitresses to come to the tables. Very limited options on "bar menu". Again, at the Barcelo Maya Palace the bartenders are all extremely friendly, patient, and efficient. Not here! We ate here two of the four nights we were in Jerez. The night time buffet was pretty good, not great, but good. One night they were cooking grilled fish, which was delicious. At least we could "wait on ourselves". Servers were nice however, and brought wine and beer in a timely manner. Mini desserts were tasty.Again, we could not eat outside because of cigarette smoke. Check out was the same as check in. About 25 golfers were checking out, and we had to wait over 30 minutes just to get up to the counter. This hotel totally caters to golfers- period. They all seemed to be very happy!g, So if you are not looking for gourmet food, great service, or a fun pool area, and just want to golf, I do recommend this hotel. Golfers only!

    “Golf holiday”

Great Hotel, Great food, Great Golf went with friends, but would look to book to take the family. Would go all inclusive again as the quality of the wine at lunch and dinner where outstanding. The first time I have never had to fight to get a sun lounger at the pool even though the hotel was fully booked. When with a group of ladies to play golf and didn't feel out of place as the ratio to men and ladies was about equal.

    “Second visit”

This was our second visit to Montecastillo and once again we were not disappointed. In fact the upgrade of rooms for our group from hotel rooms to the villas alongside the 18th fairway made this visit even better than the first time. It is obvious that the word is out that this is a great venue for golfers which means that the hotel needs to be careful not to make the course overcrowded already the golf buggies are on the expensive side.
