“Travelling with a 4 year old and an Infant - Travel agent review.”

Firstly apologies for the delayed review. We stayed at this hotel from the 19th -26th January 2017. We are a family of 4 with a 4 year old and a 8 month old and found a fair few problems with the resort itself. When we first arrived at the hotel it had been a long day, delayed flight and delayed baggage collection so we had been up for the best part of 14 hours with an early start and 2 very tired children, all we wanted was a swift easy check in and to get some food and go to bed. The guy behind reception was to us very unprofessional. He answered the phone on several occasions and carried on a conversation with whoever it was, sounded like a personal call to us. We found this extremely rude considering it was our first impression of the hotel. A quick guide to where things are and that was that. Noone to take bags to the rooms either! a nightmare with all the baggage we had. We were in block 2 on the 2nd floor. The lift was tiny!! Just about fit 1 adult and a buggy with a little child in. My husband then waited for us to go up and then got the lift afterwards. Considering we were told this was the 'family block' its not very family friendly in that respect. We stayed in a family superior room which was fairly dated. We found a fair amount of damage to furniture and were slightly annoyed that we had to pay a deposit and daily charge for a kettle when they supply most other things needed for an infant such as baby bath, changing mat and table etc yet we have to pay for a kettle, yes you get the deposit back, to feed our daughter her milk easily for the week. At first we were going to go down and fill it up at the bar or in the restaurant but the rooms were so far away that we ended up paying! Also be aware you have to leave a deposit for pool towels aswell and a daily charge for those too!! The childrens pool wasn't heated. our little boy went in for a bit but came out freezing and refused to go in it again!! Disappointing as we'd booked the hotel for the family features! The childrens club itself we used once however it was awful! We were advised that a brand new one was being sorted out and would open in a few weeks so that's great but what about the children there when we were. Most of the toys had been taken to the new one and not much for our 4 year old to do. I'm a travel agent and asked to see the new one so it would help me sell it and unfortunately this wasn't possible due to heating going into the pool there but reception advised they would send some pictures over via email. I'm still awaiting this email however! However we couldn't fault the kids entertainment team. They were absolutely brilliant and the kids disco was amazing! Our little boy couldn't wait to go there every night and had such fun! They really got involved with the children and made his holiday! The play park needs some work. We took our little one a couple of times but the see saw had no handles for the kids to hold on, there was a bolt sticking out from where something else had broken etc. Not great for a family hotel. Be warned that the slopes down to reception can get really slippy when wet. We had a couple of days with an hour or so of rain and we nearly slipped a few times and my little boy fell over a number of times. Just be wary. Food was average! There wasn't much choice for children and my little one ended up having burgers or sausages most nights as nothing else he would eat. If you are a fussy eater, I know I am, then you do end up having the same stuff for lunch and dinner mostly! Became very samey towards the end of the week. Food got cold really quickly even though the plates were warm, sometimes even too hot to hold. Desserts were amazing though and breakfast was lovely too. Bar stuff were really rude. It was our first night so didn't really know how it worked and we were standing by the bar a guy looked over and walked round the back and started up a chat with the other bartender! We were then told to just go and make our own and he pointed to behind the bar with a load of spirits lined up! Wherever you choose to stay in Lanzarote, if you have children, go to the Rancho texas park, an absolutely amazing excursion, if you book through the rep at the hotel then you can get the bus from opposite side of the road for 4 euros each, well worth it! The rep at the hotel for Thomson, Graham, was amazing! Such a lovely guy and couldn't do enough for us. Unfortunately our little boy was ill for half the holiday, we think it was something he ate, and he always asked after him and made a fuss. A Credit to Thomson! There isn't much to do around the hotel itself. Tiny beach down the road but a nightmare to find and you have to go down loads of steps to get there. Not ideal with a buggy. They run a bus to costa teguise which was free. Driver was really rude! Overall we definitely wouldn't go back to this hotel. We had a good break away but when we went out! I won't be recommending this hotel to customers I serve in the shops either unless there is a real improvement with staff attitude and the childrens facilities sorted.

“Nice hotel in need of a refurb - not 4* ”

Hotel - Classed as a 4* family hotel on their website and other sites. I would say this hotel is more like a 3* hotel. It's very rundown as I noticed a lot of leaks and cracks and paint chipped. The kids play area has items missing and bits of metal sticking out where they used to be. The main reception area is very big and welcoming but could again do with an update to bring it to a 4* hotel. Rooms - We are staying in a superior double room. These are big comfortable rooms with 2 single beds pushed together (not hooked so tend to slip away from each other) the decor is dated and the room has considerable signs of wear. Our bathroom in particular had water leaking through the ceiling from the room above. Once we told the staff about this we were given another room just next door which was very helpful with moving all our belongings. Staff and entertainment- This is definitely where the hotel outdoes it's self the entertainment for adults and children alike is excellent and all the staff are very friendly. My almost 2 year old little girl absolutely loved all the entertainers and they make a fuss of them which is nice to see. Food- We only stayed on a b&b board and the breakfast is good. Fresh fruit, bread, cheeses, cold meats, cooked breakfast items and cereals. Lots of juices and coffee and tea making facilities. You will definitely find something to eat anyway. Access to beach- Although the nearest beach is about a 20 min walk from the hotel, we found this to be a very nice walk and done it everyday of the holiday. The main beach is about 50 min walk. The hotel also offers a free shuttle bus that runs from morning to early evening. Overall we have had a nice comfortable stay, but I really think the hotel needs a full refurb. So it falls into the category of a 4* hotel.

“Great hotel for familys, but small improvements could make it a lot better.”

We had a lovely February stay here, the hotel is good for families with young children and we would return. There were some things about our stay which were very good, but also some smallish basic details which need improvement. I'll put my review in basic points. CONFUSION on trip advisor as to Name Change, photos ect. - The hotel seems to have changed name several times over the past few years, as has their property across the road, they used to be Barcelo Lanzarote Mar, Barceló Lanzarote Playa (across the street), It seems that the one across the road changed to Occidental Lanzarote Playa, and this one is changing to Occidental Lanzarote Mar, somehow this one is now Lanzarote Barceló Resort, I don't think there could be much confusion, once you get there you would see that. We had a good nosey around the playa hotel and Mar looked slightly better. We were also worried about some pictures that were put up before we left on this site showing the kids club under renovation. The people putting up those pics probably didn't realize that a brand new bigger and better kids club had already been built at the opposite end of the hotel and is open and in action, they will be making the old kids club in to something else I would imagine. ACCESSABILITY: I think that there are areas of access in the hotel that need addressed, we do not have a wheelchair, but a double buggy that cannot be bumped up and down stairs like a single. The lifts seem to leave you between floors so you still need to go up and down stairs when you exit. There is a giant ramp up from reception which is great and looks new, but at the top you either need to go left which is a big long route if you are going right, if you turn right there are 3 steps. We were unable to access the new kids club with our buggy as there is just no way to get there without hitting multiple staircases. We tried every route and asked at reception a few times. OUR ROOM. We had a family suite it was newly refurbished ultra modern very good, cannot fault the layout, had fridge and microwave. Best hotel room we have stayed in to date that properly accommodates 2 adults and 3 kids. Balcony had adult chairs and toddlers. The only problem was we had a little garden with toys in it and it was impossible for the kids to use as ours was so overgrown, the neighbouring ones did not seem to have this issue. KIDS ENTERTAINMENT: The mini club is amazing so much to do but our kids just do not want to stay without us ! We must be so great! lol! That's fine we are on holiday as a family to spend time together anyway, they staff at the club are very super talented and amazing and the mini disco is the best we have seen at any hotel. FOOD~: Food was ok, Id say on the whole good. Its nice that its fresh cooked but runs out quickly, so mad rush for stuff when its put out like chips at lunch and croissants in the morning I saw some heated exchanges over those items :0 , The dinner items at night a few times we received undercooked. I would assume its due to staff being under pressure to be faster, we got raw fish a few times, then bloody roast pork that was almost raw (yuk). They need to do something to stagger the diners, in honesty the restauruant opened quite late for us ? 6.30 there is a massive queue of brittish starving screaming kids at the door! maybe they could open at 6? If it was open at 5pm Id be there then . DRINKS: Drinks are good there is a All inclusive bit at the back of each bar, self service which is great for us normally, but if you want to be served that's ok too you can just order as normal too. WIFI: Oh dear :( massive thumbs down. so I have to answer emails for 1 hour aprox per day whilst on holiday (no rest when you are your own boss). This was really my biggest issue with this hotel, So no internet at all at our room, the reception area you could connect for maybe a minute and then it kicked you out then reconnected continuously so annoying ! the 1st 2 days my hours work took me 4 hours and caused us problems, receptionist claimed someone was coming to fix it ? hmm? I asked lots where there was an internet café no one seemed to know!? ! until I realise the wee pub on the corner gives you free wifi if you buy a drink, surely they know that? its physically joined to the hotel thought not part of it. So Anyone looking for decent wifi should go there. So our internet charges from mobile and internet from going to the café each day and paying for a drink £5 to use wifi, aprox £400 for 11 days. So I'm SORRY NO FREE WIFI Id return to the hotel, but I feel the following small details should be addressed: 1. buffet management 2. wifi - needs sorted 3. Front desk doesn't seem to communicate well with other departments.

    “Lovely Half Term Break”

Booked this hotel for a well needed week away, taking my parents on their first ever holiday abroad. The hotel was good. The rooms were spacious and clean and we had a nice sea view room that was a little sun trap late afternoon, which was good when it got windy in the main area. The restaurant provided a wide selection of food for each meal, always serving food freshly prepared on the griddle. There is another restaurant outside that you can eat in once, this was free when using the hotel voucher. Food was really good. Pools were cold, but didn't stop the kids enjoying themselves. Plenty to keep them busy when not in the pool with the games room with table tennis, pool tables, air hockey etc... The complimentary shuttle bus is great, taking no more than 10 mins to get into the local town. We preferred to walk along the coastal path, which took about 45 minutes. We booked this as a Barcelo hotel but seems Occidental are taking over. Would be nice if you could also use the facilities of the Occidental hotel directly over the road. Overall we had an enjoyable week away.

Once more we thank you for choosing our hotel for your holiday and very much look forward to having the opportunity to serve you again in the future. Kind regards, The management
