    “Fantastic Resort!”

Starting out - I was very nervous about this place based on several reviews. I must say that in my opinion all the bad ones were 100% wrong. We have been to all areas of Mexico for the past 10 years and this place is up towards the top of our list - only a 2nd to Cozumel due to the snorkeling so close to the resort. The food here is above average for your typical all inclusive resort. Yes, there are some things that are not good (in my opinion) but there are folks from other parts of the world that think the same of the food in the US. I never had any problem finding something that was very good to eat. The fruit is amazing - as with most tropical destinations. And the desserts - without a doubt the best I have ever had at an AI resort. We did end up changing rooms after the first night - our first room was 3317 which was directly above the buffet restaurant. Being very tired from traveling, we wanted to turn in early but the clanging of dishes and silverware kept us from a sound sleep until nearly 11pm. For some this wouldn't be a problem, but we like to go to bed early and get up before the sunrise. Which leads me to my next suggestion - it would be nice to have a coffee station in the lobby - not out by the pool snack station. Minor inconvenience - but something that could easily be changed. The pools are excellent! Clean and large enough to always find the spot you are looking for whether it be a quiet area or the party zone. We enjoyed the quiet pool - with the exception of the day of the "Pool Party" which included a foam party. This is definitely not a PG rated event - we had to pack up and head for the room when this started..... unless you are looking to expose your children to a night club experience at an early age. I would have much preferred them to keep this nonsense at the party pool and swim up bar area. We never had one single problem with cleaning or things not working in our room - and it was always well stocked with water and towels. Any time there was something missing (an extra towel for example) All I had to do was walk down the hall to the housekeeping cart and ask for one - very simple. 99% of the staff were very accommodating and friendly - so I am thoroughly confused by others reviews of rude staff. I have found that a smile accompanied by a "Please" and "Thank You" goes along way in this world today!!! Any questions - please reach out to me, I would love to help!! I look forward to a return visit to this piece of paradise!!!

“A relaxing and happy week at this resort”

What a wonderful beach! Resort has a good layout, two pools, great restaurants and a wonderful beach. We found the staff to be very helpful at all times. Evening entertainment could use some improvements with the sound system in the theatre. We would have liked the pool and beach music to be turned down a bit rather than listening to the constant loud beat in the background. Overall we had a relaxing and happy week, great room and great service

    “Happy with our choice”

We stayed at the Occidental Caribe during our children's "spring break" the last week of March. After reading negative reviews, I was very nervous for our choice, however, I felted prompted to write this review after our positive experience. 1. The Beach: Despite the fact that my husband is normally a "pool" person, I was pleasantly surprised that we spent the majority of our time there. The beach is fabulous. There is NO seaweed problem (unlike other areas in the Caribbean). The beach stretches a considerable distance in each distance if you choose to go for walks. Also, the waves are quite large, which made it more fun to be in the water. If you have really young children, this stretch of the ocean might not be for you as it may be unsafe for young children. But, for my children who are 10 and 12, it proved to be a lot of fun! 2. The pools: There are two pools at this resort. The "party" pool and the quiet pool. We found ourselves at the quite pool most of the time as the party pool tended to be loud and as stated "a party". We preferred the other pool, and it actually ended up working to our advantage, as the majority of the guests were at the other pool, making it nicer where we were! We did bring rafts/tubes for our children, and were glad we did as the kids ended up using them quite frequently. I would also suggest bringing other pool toys for your youngsters as we found we were glad we did. We did bring some of our own towels as it made it easier for us as the towel hut was not always open when we needed it to be. We sometimes used the hotel towels, and sometimes did not. We did put our towels out every morning between 7 and 8 a.m. However, there were always lounge chairs available. We just wanted a particular location that was close to both the beach and the pool, and with us having 7 people in our party, we wanted to have chairs next to each other. The resort is big enough I never felt there were a lot of people. 3. Food: So I would honestly say the food was "average". I have had better food at other resorts in Mexico and Jamaica. From what I have heard from others who have traveled to Punta Cana, it might just be a Punta Cana thing, more than a resort thing. With that being said, you will not go hungry, and unless you are an extremely picky eater, you might be adventurous and try something new that you end up liking. We did go to the public relations desk at 7 a.m. the morning following our arrival to make reservations for the week. I was slightly confused as to how many we were allowed to have for the week. While I was there, they secured 4 reservations for ala cart restaurants. The next morning, I went back to change one, and ended up reserving ala cart reservations for the entire 7 nights. I think my experience for the food was better as a result. We only did the buffet for breakfasts. We chose to do the pizza for lunch on two days (no reservations needed) and the Mexican restaurant (lunch is not mexican) for the remaining days. The Mexican restaurant ended up being our favorite for lunch as it seemed like it was a hidden gem that no one knew about. We could sit outside right next to the ocean and enjoy the place to ourselves! Do yourself a favor and check it out for yourself! Our favorite restaurant overall was hands down the "Tokyo" Japanese steakhouse. We went there twice and loved it both times. The Dominican, French, and Italian restaurants had good food, but the service was extremely slow. That is a downfall when you have impatient children! The waitstaff were always very kind with the kids! My husband was very appreciative of the omelettes made to order for breakfast at the buffet. 4. The rooms So yes, the rooms are outdated. But, we did not have any problems with our room. We paid extra to have an "ocean view" room, and were glad we did! The views from rooms 3416 and 3418 were fabulous! So I would highly recommend building 3 as it was very centrally located to the quiet pool, and the front desk/main building. We were on the top floor (4th) and that ended up being great as our room was more of a cathedral ceiling which made our room seem larger. Having the top floor also seemed quieter. (with the exception of the Japanese steakhouse showtimes in the evening as the back door to the restaurant was near our room! 5. The bars: So although I am not a big drinker, I feel that the drinks have room to improve. They did not have staff coming around pool side or beach side to take drink orders, and I feel this was a bigger issue. Getting a drink was just not convenient unless you were at the party pool. And I would say that while some bartenders were good at making drinks, others looked put off about making them. It was hard to find frozen drinks. One bar did have a blender, but most of the time, they tried to use a half frozen base. I did find the last day that they make a good mojito. I wish I would have figured this out sooner! 6. Excursions: So we booked through apple vacations, which partners with Amstar. We met a representative when we got to the resort who was very helpful in booking excursions. Both of our excursions (scapepark and the countryside tours) were well worth the money. Honestly, I have been to better resorts, but for the value based on the money paid, I am very happy with our choice! We decided to do a more economical resort this time since we were taking the kids and knew that some concessions would need to be made. I looked for the resort that had the best pool and best beaches for the money, and I feel we found that! Don't question yourself if you were like me reading all the reviews! Just have fun!
