Built in the 18th century at the edge of the oldest part of city, this market is one of the most beautiful in Spain (especially on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays when the street sellers take over the street). Not far from here lies El Salvador Cathedral, a magnificent example of Gothic architecture guarded by the statue of La Regenta, the star of the literary work of the same name written by Leopoldo Alas ‘Clarín’ and set in the city of Oviedo (called Vetusta in literary fiction).

    Plaza de la Escandalera is a square that separates the historic centre of Oviedo from the shopping area, and acts as a gateway to other highlights such as San Francisco Park, where you can enjoy an afternoon with an ice cream in summer or roasted chestnuts in winter, and the famous Campoamor Theatre, where the Prince of Asturias Awards are held. A must during a visit to the centre is a stop at Calle Gascona, a street where the essence of Asturian gastronomy is concentrated. This area is packed with ‘chigres’ or traditional bars serving cider and delicious home-made food.
