At the crossroads of two continents, Tangier has always been able to boast of its strategic location. This made it for a long time the target of conquerors, including Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Portuguese. The oldest city in North Africa, a meeting point in the past for spies and intellectuals, is also today a favorite destination for many tourists who come to visit the medina, the kasbah, the souks and its beaches.
Tangier, which has become a symbol of the new Morocco, is a magical city that enchants its visitors and that has been able to adapt to modernity without leaving aside its own identity and history. The climate of Tangier, its location, its culture and the comfort of hotels as the Barceló Tanger make this destination a unique place to spend a vacation or a getaway. This multicultural city is the ideal starting point to discover Morocco.
Two parts divide this city that can be easily covered on foot: the old town or medina and the so-called new town. The medina or old city of Tangier is a network of narrow streets full of bazaars with local products and which houses the Great Souk or square of April 8, 1947, where stands the mosque of Sidi bou Abid and a reference to observe the day to day life of this city.
Walking through the old city allows you to discover other points of interest as: the Rue des Siaghins, the palace, the Zoco Chico (Petit Socco), the Great Mosque, the Kasbah square or the heart of the medina.
Boulevard Pasteur is the artery of the new city of Tangier and an excellent place to appreciate the atmosphere of this city. A stroll through here cannot end without a visit to the legendary Café de Paris located on Place France.
Arriving in Tangier for tourism is also an opportunity to get to know its surroundings with places like Cabo Espartel, located just 14 kilometers from the city and with magnificent views from its lighthouse to the Spanish coast; and the Grutas de Hércules, beautiful natural caves that the sea invades at high tide. The magic of Tangier and its surroundings is completed by sites such as the medina of Asilah or the famous Café Hafa, with terraces on several levels and a viewpoint towards Spain.
Sun lovers will also find in this destination wonderful beaches on a beautiful coastline. The beaches of Tangier located on the Atlantic coast are of fine light-colored sand and ideal for surfers. Highlights include the Sol beach, Achakar beach, the beach of Cuevas de Hércules or Sidi Kacen beach. The beaches of the Strait coast are mostly small wild coves and among them are the beach of Merkala, the beaches of the Bay of Tangier or the beach of Ksar el Majad. To go much further, from Tangier airport you can reach some of the wonderful cities of this country where you can stay in one of our hotels in Morocco.
