    “Detailed Review”

I stayed with a friend at the Barcelo Maya Caribe in November 2018. I have stayed at the following Rivera Mayan resorts (in order of awesomeness): Riu Palace Riviera Maya (by far the best resort in this list), Iberostar Tucan/Quetzal, Iberostar Beach/Del Mar, Grand Bahia Principe Tulum/Coba, and Grand Sunset Princess. The Barcelo Maya Caribe was comparable to the Iberostar Beach/Del Mar. When we arrived, we were provided a room with one king bed instead of two doubles as we had requested. While I realize that they can’t guarantee these requests, I have never experienced this at any other resort. Having said that, they did a really great job in handling the situation. First, they provided us an upgraded Premium room for the first night. It was a really nice room, much bigger than a standard room. One thing I’ve noticed about room trends is that open concept bathrooms seem to be a thing now. This upgraded room was no exception. Not ideal when you are staying with a friend. Second, they provided us with our requested room on the second day and made the transition as smooth as possible. We didn’t have to check out in the morning and then wait all day for the room. We got to keep the room until the new room was available at 3pm. We then simply called down to reception and they sent someone to collect our bags and take us to the new room. Food and Drinks The food was mostly underwhelming. It wasn’t bad but it definitely wasn’t great. For the week we were allowed 4 a la carte dinners which required reservations. We had no trouble getting the restaurants and times we wanted. The Japanese restaurant Tokyo was really good, but the steakhouse and Italian were mediocre at best. The buffet had a lot of options but nothing really stood out. The best thing I ate at the buffet was probably the chicken nuggets, which were delicious, but probably not a great sign if that’s the best thing I ate. I usually drink Captain Morgan spiced rum and they had this included in the standard package, so no upgrade was required. They were mostly mixed well. The beer offered was Modelo, both regular and dark at all the different bars. I tried a few of the frozen drinks (pina colada, daiquiris, etc.) and found them to be almost too sweet to drink. Beach and Pools The beach was nice but definitely a bit rocky in some areas. Getting in to the sea in front of the Caribe/Beach area was a bit dicey but once you got in it was fine. You can walk out quite a distance and the water isn’t too deep. There were lots of loungers available at any time of the day, better than most resorts. There are no palapas for shade. Instead, the palm trees provide the shade which means you’ll periodically need to reposition your loungers to stay in the sun or shade. The pool was nice and had a couple distinct sections. The section closest to the swim up bar was where the water sports and activities occurred and where the music was loudest. The opposite section of the pool was more laid back and quiet. Again, lots of loungers available at any time of the day. Occasionally I did see people being served drinks while in their loungers around the pool but I don’t know how consistent that is. Layout and Facilities The resort layout was really well done. The resort is quite big if you include the entire property (called the Barcelo Maya Grand), but each individual resort was laid out well and not too big. The Caribe was the smallest resort and you could easily get from the lobby to the beach in about 5 minutes. The rooms are centrally located. If you wanted to visit the other Barcelo resorts on the property, it was a reasonable walk or you could take the double decker bus which seemed to come every 10 minutes or so. Beside the lobby was the Maya Mall where the restaurants can be found. There was also shopping and a casino. The 24/7 bar also has a bowling alley that you can use for a fee. The lobby bar was also located here. Beside the lobby bar was a stage for music performances. This got uncomfortably loud when sitting in the lobby bar trying to enjoy a drink. There was a gym and spa closer to the rooms and pool. It is by far the nicest gym I’ve seen at any resort. It had everything including a section that had at least a dozen bikes for a spin class. Service We found the service really inconsistent at times. We enjoyed sitting around at the beach grill (Captain Morgan) and sometimes we were served at our seats and sometimes we had to go get drinks ourselves. The same applied at the Strikers 24/7 bar. The service in the lobby bar was much more consistent but still not quite at the same standard as other resorts (Riu Palace Riviera Maya and Iberostar Tucan/Quetzal/Beach/Del Mar). At those other resorts they really seem to go above and beyond to make sure you get outstanding service. Housekeeping was not great. We had to call several times for water, toilet paper and towels as they weren’t always replenished. I would consider returning in the future, but if the Riu or Iberostar resorts mentioned above are available for a similar cost I think I would choose them over this resort.

    “Riviera Maya at its finest”

We stayed at the Caribe this trip during high season at the Barcelo. Going in I knew what to expect from the room at this location. It is a basic hotel room and a bit dated but it completely serves its purpose and you really should spend minimal time inside. The pool area is good. Towel shack seems like an after thought but again whats a short walk in paradise. Were Caribe really shines is the front desk staff and its proximity to other places. Buffet and reservation restaurants are a super short distance and its rooms are directly connected to the Maya Mall and Sports Bar in the off chance it rains. All in all a good value for the money.

    “Barcelo Maya Caribe”

Our family of 5 stayed here the week of Jan 7th and we had the best time ever! Drive from airport to hotel was about 45 minutes (with a private transportation company). Check in was easy and they were able to accomidate our request for rooms being next to each other. The rooms were neat and clean, which are very important factors when traveling. The resort is huge and we loved that feature. This property is a stay at one, play at four restorts. There is so much to do between all the properties, you really never need to leave. Every property was equally as great as the others. Just to name a few of the activities included are, mini golf, water sport equipment, basketball court, fooseball tables, ping pong tables, free snorkle gear rental, sports bar with jumbo viewing screen, disco, and many more. Every staff member that we interacted with was very kind and helpful. Pools and pool area are gorgeous with plenty of chairs around the pool or on the beach. The beach is amazing. I read some reviews regarding the beach, but it really is amazing. There is soft powder sand as far as you can walk. And same goes for walking out into the ocean. Soft sand bottom ocean. Food and drinks are wonderful. If you can't find something to eat while here, it's a you problem, not a resort problem. We ate at buffets and reservation required resturants and all were great. TBH, we were nervous booking a Mexican vacation due to the press it is getting due to crime, but none of us ever felt threatened while there. We were all very comfortable and if I could go back this very minute, I would. Love this resort and hope to go back someday.

    “Wouldn't recommend during holidays”

We stayed there over the holidays - after Xmas 2018 till Jan 5th 2019. We are a family of four (two boys 8,4) . I want to start by saying this experience could be very specific for our traveling dates. It was extremely busy. Well, here is my experience - Rooms are nice and comfortable, pools are great, beach is beautiful (no service on beach). My biggest disappointment was the food and beverage. Food was mediocre in quality and flavors, there wasn't a lot of authentic food. Service at restaurant wasn't great, sometimes we got lucky! but overall the staff seemed unhappy and tired. There weren't enough people at the bars - service was very slow, we sat at the mall bar a few times (yes, a mall, bar...) and the drinks were rarely good or strong. I understand there's a level of alcohol packages, (like many other upgrade packages we were told about) but for the high holiday pricing we paid we were expecting good cocktails. Other than food, drinks and service the hotel has good potential which is why I'm not sure if this is a holiday experience vs any other time. For example, the a la cart restaurants were booked and we couldn't get reservations, I'm assuming that's a holiday issue but can't tell. I don't recommend going over high season.
