    “The good outweighs the bad”

This was our 12th time here.first the bad .we had a junior suite for two weeks over that time our room key {we had two} didn't work a total of 7 times ,one time both keys didn't work.we would have to go back and have them reprogrammed a very long walk ,I'm 68 at least a quarter mile each way.another morning I'm,sitting on balcony in my pjs and the sliding door broke with me outside lucky my wife was there to call maintenance the came pretty quickly and had to take the door apart to get me out.last thing the food your flank steak I tried to eat 5 or 6 times impossible to chew .I tried it at beach grill and buffet just plain bad as was too tough to eat.you can't help the seaweed.now the good the grounds are always beautiful the staff at pool bar the best, maid service great and as always our friend Isabella at the tequila bar know her for many years now. I will be back next year .check in was a pleasure with premium

“Beautiful & Fun but needs to better inform guests”

Pros: The resort is beautiful! The decoration, the views, and the layout are spectacular. The pina coladas are amazing, Kyoto is hands down the best location for dinner with amazing sushi, and the staff was so nice and helpful. Plus, the rooms were always super clean and out fridges were always restocked. There is a free bus that takes you to the other Barcelo resorts that comes every ten minutes so you could hit up their bars, food spots, and the club. Cons: You only get to reserve 2 dinners even though we stayed 4 nights which sucked, so we had to go to the buffet which is ok. The strawberry frozen drinks are more than sugary. You need reservations and lessons to windsurf and sail (which is free and included) but no one told us so by the time we wanted to go do them we couldn't which was beyond upsetting. Sadly, the swim up bar opens pretty late (12 noon) and closes kinda early (7pm). The resort is also an hour drive from the airport. Also, kids should not be in the swim up bar pool but they are which can kill the vibe.

“Excellent in almost every aspect with a few blemishes”

This was my family's third time staying in all-inclusive resorts in the Riviera Maya over the last few years but our first time at Barcelo. The Maya Tropical is one of five hotels comprising the Barcelo Grand Maya Resort. Functionally, it is a single large hotel and apparent differences between the hotels are the names and some of the decorations although the entire complex maintains a common feel. As a guest in any one of the hotels you can make use of the facilities of all other hotels, including pool areas, buffet restaurants, common areas, shopping areas, theaters and reservation-only restaurants. The pool area includes a children's pool with water slides and a recreation area with a Kids Club - supervised childcare - which our kids absolutely loved. (The exception is the Palace Hotel, which grants you access to all 5 but guests of the other four hotels are asked not to go to the Palace.) This is hands down the best resort I've stayed at in the Riviera Maya. A common complaint about all inclusive resorts is the quality of food. Our food experience was great in the buffet restaurants, the poolside grills and the reservation only restaurants. The staff at the restaurants is always knowledgeable and attentive. (Special thanks to our servers Edilberto Kuyok, Francisco Caamal, Viviane Salaam, Maximiliano Tun, Bianca Poot, Alfredo Hernandez, and most specially to Felix Cab at the Mexico Lindo Restaurant for his skill in helping us navigate complex food allergies safely.) The beach was gorgeous - expect some rocks though as you are facing the largest coral reef in the Western hemisphere - and there are plenty of free aquatic activities for which you get free instruction, provided you sign up early. We decided to take advantage of sailing lessons and take a catamaran out for a quick sail. Overall, the resort end of the experience was top notch. Surprisingly, the blemishes had to do with the lodging end of things. As soon as we checked in we noticed two plumbing issues in our room, a leak in the faucet and a toilet with a broken flushing mechanism. We were quickly offered a different room, closer to the pool and beach area. Unfortunately, the bathroom still had minor plumbing issues that we decided did not merit a new call to the front desk for a new relocation - the toilet needed some jiggling after flushing in order to stop it from running, and the bathtub didn't empty quickly. Also, the beds were not the size advertised (site promised two queen size beds but these were full size beds instead). Worst problem was completely unexpected but totally avoidable. Our room was located very close to one of the theaters, which has live shows nightly from 9:30 to 10:30pm. If you attend the show, no big deal, after the show all sound is turned off and you can go off to sleep without problems. If you want to/need to skip the show (e.g. small children with early bed times, just plain tired and dying to catch some Zs) you WILL have trouble with the noise. Saying it is noisy is an understatement. Be aware that the hotel hosts conferences and we happened to coincide with one. One of the nights of our stay, the conference held a party for the attendees in the theater just across from our room. For some reason the organizers completely ignored the 10:30 end time and continued playing music much louder than usual until past midnight. Worst of all, the front desk staff claimed ignorance of the situation, which was even more aggravating. So why am I giving Barcelo a 4/5 rating with all these complaints? Now that I know about the noise issues, if I were to visit again, I know to request rooms as far away from theaters as possible. Also, after visiting, it seems that the northernmost buildings (starting with the Tropical hotel) were built first or renovated last, so I would reserve in one of the hotels further south in the complex.

    “Lovely place ”

Having read so many previous reviews to decide if this was a good place to go I have decided to list my review to help others decide , based on the bad stuff people had written. So 1) sea weed , not an issue , some present but was cleaned all day every day like a military exercise ( the Navy are actually involved now ) result a stunning beach that is so clean. 2) hotel room - Air con worked super, we had joining rooms for our children, very clean, maids twice a day and 5* bed - the Beds are Sealy mattress so first class. Bathroom was very nice ample shower pressure water always hot and can be controlled temp. Mini Bar ample drinks and water . In all high standard room, we were not premium. 3) Food .. superb choice .. anyone who says the food is limited and bland is exaggerating. I can’t list it all there was so much and CLEAN beyond normal - I didn’t find a dirty plate spoon etc in 14 days .. tables are immaculate . Also a first for us we did not see ONE fly in the buffet ever .. never, this includes the beach bar restaurant which amazed me . The tropical beach restaurant was superb choice and flavour. There has been a cylcospora scare in Mexico or tummy bug .. we did not suffer at all .. it may pay to buy your own drink container to take as single use and for kids but this hotel complex is not a problem it has very high standards.. food is checked and removed each day ( I saw this ) and fresh replaced - if you are worried just squeeze lime on your salad and have a slice in your drink it will give you added protection but this hotel is high food hygiene believe me, I had my three kids there so I was watching. We had 11 a La carte meals .. best in order of quality 1 French 2 Japanese 3 Santa Fe steak 4 Capri 5 Seafood 6 Spanish 7 Trattoria Italian 8 Mexican - we had one bad meal in Mexican. Across all meals Generally portions are not huge but when it is hot you don’t need it.. the salad bars are a little limited lots of crispy bread and pickled sauces pepper carrot olive egg .. cold pasta . Puddings are not like home so be prepared .. colourful but the seem to use less sugar in some things so don’t expect same taste. The French restaurant is high class food. 4. Drink .. Always offered a drink once finished .. the beer was fine for me as I don’t drink heavy at home so the beer was about 3 % . Wine in restaurants you don’t need .. it costs so ask for a glass .. we went for the sparkling white as you can’t water it down .. one red we had was .. WATER was everywhere and we drank lots ( I mean lots .. 2.5 litres during the day in the heat ) easy to get. 5 grounds of the hotel are just immaculate beyond belief and beautiful 6 kids entertainment is fair .. the Thomas Cook brochure gives the impression that activity is EACH day which is slightly incorrect as football for example was Wednesday and Saturday .. but you can get activity easily such as crazy golf ( best course ever 18 holes mini golf ) Evening theatre very professional especially the dancers who are professional - so this is high standard and varied each night .. just the humidity in August makes it hard as it’s not air conditioning. Medical .. used it once very exceptional and efficient service at reception which was the case for every matter we had. All in all a beautiful complex and huge so you can vary your choice and gym also huge I used it 7 days in 14 was clean .. towel water etc etc new kit. I would recommend this hotel, they do charge for wi fi but it’s exceptional it even works on the beach so you get what you pay for. A happy holiday my kids loved the pool and spent hours in them... space is not an issue here .
