The Barceló Punta Umbría Mar and Barceló Punta Umbría Beach Resort are committed to respecting the environment.
This can be seen in their implementation of projects to save energy as well as resources such as water, gas and electricity.
The complex boasts a 300 m2 solar farm which provides energy to heat water sustainably.
Both hotels also have biomass boilers (800 kw each) which, thanks to the combustion of olive stones, help to reduce their annual gas consumption by between 10% and 15%.
Biomass is one of the most environmentally-friendly energy sources that exists, with zero pollution. Its combustion emits carbon dioxide but it is the same amount it emits when decomposing naturally and does not alter the balance of gases in the atmosphere. Of all the renewable energies, the olive stone is an energy source with enormous potential for growth and vision for the future thanks to the high levels of production of olives in Spain and because they create very little waste; the burning of one tonne of olive pits generates 100 grams of ash, which is later used as fertiliser for plants.

The stretch of beaches is approximately 14 kilometres from La Canaleta to El Portil. They are divided into zones, starting Monday, 15 June, as a safety measure to control the capacity, which is established at 108,032 beachgoers during high tide (there are 15,000 residents in the municipality of Punta Umbria). City Hall has determined that the beach must be divided into seven separate zones: La Canaleta-Ría, Albergue Juvenil-Avenida de Andalucía, Altavista-Pato Amarillo, Everluz-Puntamar, Los Enebrales, La Bota and El Portil. A separate flag will be placed in the Civil Protection checkpoints for these zones—in addition to the usual one with bathing suggestion—which will be raised when the beaches’ capacities have been reached.
