“A quick visit to San Jose”

I've seen reviews that call this hotel outdated. My opinion would be that it has the feel of old world elegance. The property is beautiful. We were welcomed by the music of a piano being played in the large and spacious lobby. Many comfortable areas to sit and visit privately. The help was very friendly, the surroundings lovely. We got checked in and headed to our room, both exhausted. We ordered room service...nothing to write home about, but it hit the spot. The room had a sofa and two comfy chairs, plus a dining table, plenty of lamps, paper to write on, all the amenities in the bathroom, a coffee maker (not typical in Central America) with Britt coffee, a wonderful bed (huge plus for me) with comfy pillows, robes for both of us, and plenty of room and hangers to unpack. The closet has a mini bar, a safe, an iron and a board. There was a hair dryer in the bathroom. The windows looked out over the gardens and the city. The room was very clean. We woke the next morning and headed for breakfast. By far the nicest breakfast buffet I've been to with the exception of Vegas or Reno. Anything you could think of....a dozen varied breads and rolls, 6 juices to choose from, a coffee machine that made expresó, cappuccino, regular coffee, hot chocolate. There were 4 large stations with food...ranging from omelets, crispy bacon, fabulous potatoes, Gallo pinto (rice and beans), all manner of fresh fruit, cheeses, meats, cereals, salad and more. The breakfast was included with our room and was well worth it. Probably every bit of $20 per person. However, they make up for it on their restaurants. Prices are steep. We ordered burgers for lunch. $15 each on a bun that had been frozen, very tough meat, fake cheese (processed), and little packets of condiments to put on it. Served with fries that had been frozen. Very mediocre. Most meals are in the $25+ category. Some simpler items are cheaper as room service because they don't serve them at the restaurant. A plain cheeseburger with fries is $10 in your room, but the cheapest burger they had in the restaurant was with ham and bacon (which I peeled off and gave to my husband). You can order room service from the Japanese restaurant as well, but again, high priced for mediocre food....at least what we had. Another issue is the pool. Absolutely gorgeous. You'll find it after walking through the gardens filled with fabulous botanicals on winding pathways (not far). The pool is huge with lots of lounge chairs...sun or shade...and hammocks. However. You need to be from Alaska to be able to swim it it. Very cold! And no jacuzzi. The pool is one of the main reasons I booked this hotel....I was looking forward to spending a lot of time there. But it's more than I could handle. I saw a total of 3 people in the water the entire time we were sitting by the pool. If they just did solar, it would make a big difference. The cleaning crew didn't get to the room until after 5:00 to remake the bed and restock coffee...which was odd, but ok for us. However, we were in the room as they cleaned. Kinda weird. So....rooms, great Breakfast buffet, fabulous Other food at hotel is about a 2-3

“Good value, nice rooms, some room for improvement”

The hotel felt large and fancy (sort of in an old-fashioned way, but not too dated). The rooms were very nice and full of amenities. The included breakfast was HUGE and wonderful, though busy. The parking of our rental vehicle was pretty bad; I had to park a large vehicle in the basement of the garage, which involved doing about 7 3-point turns, three different times. The pool was beautiful. . .but cold! A hot tub would be awesome. My low point was getting pool towels--they kept sending me back and forth between the front desk and the restaurant by the pool. We never ended up getting them so we walked through the hotel dripping. The food at the restaurants was very expensive, but we felt stuck there so did eat a dinner there. . .it was fine but not worth the $. No English channels.

    “Starting our honeymoon ”

Barcelo was the best choice for the first night of our honeymoon! We arrived early in the morning after a gruelling red eye flight and the hotel allowed us to check in. This gave us a chance to have a quick nap and shower so we could properly enjoy getting to know the city a little. It was wonderful! The staff is exceptional, friendly, kind and helpful. Our room was spacious and very clean with lots of amenities. The grounds are beautiful! The garden walk is lovely. My husband loves the Pina Coladas!! Breakfast has lots of options. The hotel offers a free airport shuttle which is very helpful and also runs as a taxi to downtown at a reasonable rate. If we come back to San Jose- we will definitely stay here again!
