“Should be a Luxuyry Haven BUT spoiled by loud drunken guests - not relaxing”

My wife and I recently spent 8 nights at the Occidental Grand Cozumel Hotel followed by 6 nights at the Allegro Playacar Hotel in Playa Del Carmen. The primary reason for our trip was to scuba dive the famous Cozumel reefs, to scuba dive Cenotes and to snorkel with Whale Sharks. We are experienced scuba divers and have taken many (mostly resort based), diving holidays in The Red Sea, Maldives and Indonesia. We have provided separate trip reports for each of the 2 hotels and for Pro Divers Mexico who provided our diving. Occidental Hotel - Cozumel: (also known as Occidental Grand – all inclusive) (Our Rating 2 out of 5) This is a very pretty hotel set within the natural beach/mangrove/tropical jungle environment. The main hotel and restaurant buildings are set well back from the road and accommodation is in small, prettily-designed, 2 storeys “towers”, each with 6-8 rooms per level surrounding a central atrium. The “Standard” rooms are large, comfortable, well-finished and airy with good a/c. They have a large separate room with shower, toilet and dressing area and each has an outward facing private balcony. The upper level rooms are especially nice as the balconies are up level with the trees amongst the birds and iguanas. The accommodation is linked to the main hotel building by concrete surfaced pathways cut through the trees and a path of 200-300m leads down towards the beach, first via an adults-only pool with bar, then via a wooden bridge through the mangrove to the beach leading to a large family pool, bar and beachside restaurant. The sandy beach is splendid and there is a dive/water sports centre with pier for boat access. The hotel sits beautifully in the environment, it is perfectly placed for the diving, beach and water sports and recently was acquired by the Barcelo group, who have refurbished the restaurants and accommodation to a good standard. This hotel should be a haven of luxury BUT IT IS CERTAINLY NOT THAT FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: a) Loud, drunk guests: Unfortunately this hotel seems to attract a significant number of (down market) Americans whose sole objective seems to be to drink as much free alcohol as possible. Thus by early afternoon the adults only (so called relaxing) pool was full of loud, drunk guests and was not at all relaxing. b) Intrusive piped music: The hotel insists upon playing intrusive, loud music in every area of the hotel; (restaurants, reception areas, bars, around the pools, on the beach and even along the pathways via speakers placed in the trees). We expected the family pool area to be noisy as activities planned for the kids are accompanied by music and commentary. However, it was impossible to get away from the music and other noise, unless we went to our own room. c) Food: Was Average to Poor. The main Buffet restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Evening meals are themed (e.g. Mexican, Oriental, BBQ, Mediterranean etc.). Breakfast was the best meal of the day including hot dishes scrambled eggs, sausages and omelettes personally cooked to taste. Evening meals are ‘themed’: Oriental was ok, BBQ inedible, Mexican and Mediterranean poor. Fortunately, there was a good salad bar and good fresh fruit on offer so we didn’t go hungry but the overall standard of cooked food was poor. Within our 8 night stay we had the option to eat on 3 nights in the separate, table-service restaurants - Mexican, Seafood and Mediterranean. The Seafood restaurant food was poor (and on the beach in the evening the mosquitoes were vicious). The Mexican restaurant did not really offer Mexican food but the steaks were ok. We did not try the Mediterranean restaurant but the menu looked unexciting. d) Mosquitoes: Although the hotel regularly ‘fogs’ the vegetation around the accommodation, restaurants, pool and pathways with insecticide; the mosquitoes were annoying, especially in the evening. Note: We also walked along the beach to look at the Allegro Cozumel hotel: This was family orientated, with more rooms. This Allegro hotel; was identical in format/layout to the Allegro Playacar in Playa Del Carmen (see our separate report)

    “Nice stay.”

Bungalows 11 and 12 are loud at night due to the entertainment. Food was better than previous all-inclusives. Ate at the specialty restaurants three nights, which were very good. I don't recommend wasting your vacation time taking the tour for the coupons and discounts! They walk to lunch at the beach club is long and hot. It would be nice if they ran the golf carts back and forth for the guest! The staff was very gracious/helpful to my elderly mother. More seating needed at the adult pool, along with pool shade

Not what I ordered. I wanted a room with ocean view I was informed when I got there that no ocean view was available. I am a RC member and did not get what I paid for. Very disappointed!! Beach area was not well maintained.

    “Okay Resort”

This is my first review but have been referencing Trip Advisor for years when deciding on hotels. We just traveled to beautiful Cozumel with my husband and 2 kids. My sister and her husband and granddaughter also joined us. This is a smaller resort and I'm used to large resorts such as RIU, so here is my review. PROS: Entertainment Staff is wonderful and do a great job. Pool bar and waiters are very attentive. Beautiful hotel grounds. The Mexican restaurant Sonora was excellent! The Tortilla Soup and Steak were great. CONS: There is no bar in the pool and no bar at the beach. The selection of the food is limited due to being a smaller resort. The Specialty restaurant requires same day reservations BUT when we went at 9am there was no availability for the seafood. (instead we went to the Pirate Ship in town, it was wonderful. Cost $79 for Lobster and Steak)They start taking reservations at 8:30 and I guess we were late. The food was cold the first day we arrived at lunch time. INTERNET SERVICE...Horrible! Cost $45 for 7 days for only ONE device AND you can only use it in the lobby or your room. The fridge in the room didn't cool to well. Drawer Space: It was 4 of us and didn't have enough drawers, only 3 small drawers. BEDS: They use Double Beds instead of Queen Beds. So my husband slept with my son and I slept with my daughter since my husband and I didn't fit. I wouldn't stay here again. I am returning to the larger resorts.

    “Great beach snorkeling!”

This was my first trip to Cozumel and my first all inclusive resort. Love the atmosphere of this resort, great for nature lovers like me. Lots of birds, lizards and small animals to see around the resort. The snorkeling was awesome right off the beach! I saw stingrays, a barracuda, lobsters and tons of fish! Bring water shoes for the beach though, it's slightly rocky and can hurt your feet. The only slightly negative thing about the trip was the food. Buffet at breakfast and on the beach was ok but not the best. We didn't starve, but we tended to go into town to eat which is a little expensive to take a cab if you don't rent a car. About $20 each way. We tried Los Olivos the Mediterranean restaurant one night, much better than the buffets but still not great. If we had to call the front desk, it did usually take a couple calls before they came. Overall though everyone was super nice and helpful.
