“An overview, and a few suggestions and a snorkleing review.”

We stayed for 2 weeks at the Barcelo Colonial mid Feb/17. The best things at this resort are the staff with their high level of service, the beauty and care that obviously goes into the resort, and the gorgeous beach and its life. Whether you like white sand (toward the Caribe side) or prefer snorkeling (toward the Palace area) there is something for everyone. There were lots of water craft to use. We took a Hobie Cat out for a fly among the waves one windy day and weren't disappointed. Our main reason for choosing this resort was to go somewhere that had great snorkeling right off the beach. Our travel agent came up with their top two suggestions and we chose Barceló. The snorkeling was very good on the days that we could get out. I don't know if it is the norm, or if we hit a spate of windy days, but we could only snorkel about half the time and actually see anything. After windy days the water was so churned that visibility suffered considerably. However, on a few of the very good days it was wonderful. There were a lot of fish to see, including about 6 rays of varying sizes, turtles, barracuda, and lots of varieties of the coral tropical fish. We also enjoyed the windy, wavy days to jump around in the giant waves which was a lot of fun too! The unofficial Barceló site suggested using Sea Safe May onward, but in fact I would use it now if you tend to attract bites and marks--which I do. The one detraction for us, and all the 9 others we travelled with were to have to walk by the captive dolphin area. Many of the people we spoke with felt similarly--the time to captive hold they sentient creatures in such tiny cages for the pleasure of offering rides and swims with them has passed. I felt sad everytime I passed by and would suggest to Barceló management to consider making a better use of this space. Not many people seemed interested. I spent a bit of time thinking of what they could do in that space and would suggest something like an underwater viewing area to look at the various types of sealife in the region. It could open to the ocean, and have walkways with glass panels for viewing. Anyway...just a thought. One other thing: a few times we witnessed a white truck spraying something a smokey substance around which we thought was probably an insecticide. This may be due to the Zika virus scare, or some of the other mosquito born diseases in this tropical area. I was out on my patio one time when they went rolling by and I had to go back in my room due to the odor--which was concerning. The rooms were all identical and were great. Our bed was a little hard for us, but when we called to ask if they could do something to fix this, they did come and add some extra padding which made a big difference. I left notes for the maids/fridge fillers anytime I needed anything and they always complied. (more beer, more coffee, etc). Often, by the time we returned from breakfast our room was done. We enjoyed the food and al a carte restaurants for the most part. Once you've been to either Toyko or Kyoto restaurants we wouldn't advise returning as they are identical in menu and the performance put on by the chefs. Once was enough for us. It is obvious that a lot of care and attention goes into everything at this resort. The buffet special nights (Carribean night, Mexico night, etc.) were so well done with really cool displays. There is something for everyone, and lots of great salad fixings, or whatever you'd like. A note on tipping. We tipped regularly and always budget for this when in Mexico because we know it is really appreciated. But importantly if we happened to go out without any cash and found ourselves grabbing a drink we never ever were made to feel bad for not tipping. We've been to other all inclusive resorts where you literally could not get a drink for your life unless you were waving American dollars at the bartender. Everyone from the gardeners to the maid service and the food and beverage servers really seemed to appreciate their tips and we appreciate them! Overall, awesome time and we hope to be back some day!

    “Perfect resort for family fun”

We travelled with our two young kids. Lots of water slides, splash pads and pools. Very big resort, lots of activities and shopping. Beach was rocky, we were limited to where we could swim in ocean. Buffet food was okay...same options daily. A La Carte restaurants better but early reservations required. Brenda Silva from the Premium Colonial guest services section was a sweetheart. She found my son's lost plush dolphin and had cake and chocolat strawberries delivered to our room for my daughter's birthday! Thanks Brenda!

    “Went for music festival”

I was here for a 3 day music festival in Feb 2017. The things that were great are the pool, the beach and the number of lounge chairs available. You can not order food at the pool. It is not allowed. I found this odd because at all other all inclusive resorts I have been to you can have lunch by the pool. I was definitely disappointed because I love to have chips and guac pool side with a cold beer. The food was not great. Much of the buffet food looked like it was sitting out for too long and often was cold. Each buffet served the same food every single day for lunch. A little variety would be nice. The resort is massive and there are many a la carte restaurants to choose from. You have to make a reservation for them and if you make it for the same day you need to make it by 3pm. We ate at La Trattoria and it was the best meal I ate while there. I only saw two beers being served, Corona and Modelo Especial. The liquor choices were fine and they made some tasty mudslides at the beach pool. Irene at the beach pool was amazing! She remembered our drinks and made sure we were taken care of. The rooms are basic. Our first room smelled very strongly of mildew. I complained to the front desk and they told me they were fully booked and they could not move me. I have terrible asthma and let them know that I would be sick by the next day. They agreed to send someone to the room and when she arrived and smelled the room she said it smells and we need a new room. In the end we got a new room. The new room was clean and didn't smell at first until we realized that the refrigerator was broken. I called twice about the broken fridge and was told someone would come fix it but no one ever did. The fridge began smell like mildew, luckily, the smell did not spread too much. We never had cold beverages in the room while we were there. Pretty much everything you need is on site, there is a mall, an outdoor marketplace, plenty of bars and evening entertainment. I was disappointed to see that they have a dolphin experience on site and that the FIVE dolphins were in a very small pool. :( I would stay here again ONLY if I attend another music festival and Barcelo is the host hotel. The convenience to the venue was amazing and that alone is worth staying there.

    “Fabulous resort- TERRIBLE airport transfer”

We have been to Barcelo Colonial several times and always find this to be an amazing resort. Staff are friendly and accomodating. The beaches are clean, wide and have lots of good swimming spots that are not rocky. The swimming pools are huge and are shallow everywhere which is wonderful if you want to swim or just lounge around. The rooms are clean, spacious and have all amenities you would like, including a fully re-stocked fridge each day. Buffet meals are really 5 star. There is a huge variety of fresh food each day with an enormous selection to choose from. As well there is a beach buffet so you don't have to travel far for lunch and/or drinks. However, this is the first time we have flown Air Transat. When we arrived at the airport we went to the area where buses are supposed to transport you to the hotels. It was a DISASTER. There were 100's of people standing around and no Transat agent knew anything. As a matter of fact most of these agents didn't speak English. It was complete chaos and there were no large buses, only small mini vans. We waited 1.5 hours in the sun and finally I asked someone about how to get to the hotel (in complete frustration) and he said to follow him and we found a van that took us to the hotel. This is totally UNACCEPTABLE. I will NEVER fly Air Transat again if that is how they treat their customers. Most people we talked to afterwards said that they waited 2 hours. There was NO-ONE in charge or anyone to ask about anything. When I told the Air Transat agent at the hotel he didn't seem to care or know anything about it. Not the kind of customer service that I am used to. If you plan on flying Air Transat check about the airport transfer before you go.
