    “Went for music festival”

I was here for a 3 day music festival in Feb 2017. The things that were great are the pool, the beach and the number of lounge chairs available. You can not order food at the pool. It is not allowed. I found this odd because at all other all inclusive resorts I have been to you can have lunch by the pool. I was definitely disappointed because I love to have chips and guac pool side with a cold beer. The food was not great. Much of the buffet food looked like it was sitting out for too long and often was cold. Each buffet served the same food every single day for lunch. A little variety would be nice. The resort is massive and there are many a la carte restaurants to choose from. You have to make a reservation for them and if you make it for the same day you need to make it by 3pm. We ate at La Trattoria and it was the best meal I ate while there. I only saw two beers being served, Corona and Modelo Especial. The liquor choices were fine and they made some tasty mudslides at the beach pool. Irene at the beach pool was amazing! She remembered our drinks and made sure we were taken care of. The rooms are basic. Our first room smelled very strongly of mildew. I complained to the front desk and they told me they were fully booked and they could not move me. I have terrible asthma and let them know that I would be sick by the next day. They agreed to send someone to the room and when she arrived and smelled the room she said it smells and we need a new room. In the end we got a new room. The new room was clean and didn't smell at first until we realized that the refrigerator was broken. I called twice about the broken fridge and was told someone would come fix it but no one ever did. The fridge began smell like mildew, luckily, the smell did not spread too much. We never had cold beverages in the room while we were there. Pretty much everything you need is on site, there is a mall, an outdoor marketplace, plenty of bars and evening entertainment. I was disappointed to see that they have a dolphin experience on site and that the FIVE dolphins were in a very small pool. :( I would stay here again ONLY if I attend another music festival and Barcelo is the host hotel. The convenience to the venue was amazing and that alone is worth staying there.

    “Fabulous resort- TERRIBLE airport transfer”

We have been to Barcelo Colonial several times and always find this to be an amazing resort. Staff are friendly and accomodating. The beaches are clean, wide and have lots of good swimming spots that are not rocky. The swimming pools are huge and are shallow everywhere which is wonderful if you want to swim or just lounge around. The rooms are clean, spacious and have all amenities you would like, including a fully re-stocked fridge each day. Buffet meals are really 5 star. There is a huge variety of fresh food each day with an enormous selection to choose from. As well there is a beach buffet so you don't have to travel far for lunch and/or drinks. However, this is the first time we have flown Air Transat. When we arrived at the airport we went to the area where buses are supposed to transport you to the hotels. It was a DISASTER. There were 100's of people standing around and no Transat agent knew anything. As a matter of fact most of these agents didn't speak English. It was complete chaos and there were no large buses, only small mini vans. We waited 1.5 hours in the sun and finally I asked someone about how to get to the hotel (in complete frustration) and he said to follow him and we found a van that took us to the hotel. This is totally UNACCEPTABLE. I will NEVER fly Air Transat again if that is how they treat their customers. Most people we talked to afterwards said that they waited 2 hours. There was NO-ONE in charge or anyone to ask about anything. When I told the Air Transat agent at the hotel he didn't seem to care or know anything about it. Not the kind of customer service that I am used to. If you plan on flying Air Transat check about the airport transfer before you go.

“So much to do at this resort”

Stayed last week with 20 people for my parents 50th anniversary. We never left the resort, there was so much to do. The snorkeling off the pier was very good. There was a coral reef a few yards from the pier with cool fish and brain coral. You could even see just fish standing on the pier. Bring your own snorkels from home and water shoes for the beach most of the beach had about a foot of sharp coral as you enter the water. The activity center had lots of kayaks, paddle boards, windsurfers and tricycles never a long wait to borrow. They also had jet skis and banana boat rides for rental fee. My kids loved the surf simulator at the water park. The gym and spa across from the waterpark were really nice. I had a deep tissue massage on the beach from Victoria which was great! If you want to reserve tennis/paddle courts you need to do it in advance they book up quick. Also book your dinner reservations as soon as you check in. We loved La Trattoria (Italian) at the mall, Kyoto(Japanese) at Tropical, we had a great hibachi chef he kept us very entertained his name was Alberto San and Lindo at Beach hotel was fantastic Mexican. The pool grills were very good for lunch the nicest spot is Captain Morgan's. (Behind the Dolphin area)The dolphin show is at 11;40am every day it is fun to watch. Overall beautiful resort with great service. Would not hesitate to visit again!

    “Huge Resort ”

We stayed at the Barcelo Colonial Maya February 12th to 19th 2017. There are five Resorts, you can walk through, eat and drink in four of them excluding the Palace. There is a mall with a bowling alley and a casino as well as a Disco. Some of these cost extra. The food at the buffets and restaurants is decent. Alex Dominguez at the buffet was always fun to speak with and joke. Thank you to Fredy Ochoa at the front desk of the colonial for all of his help, we really appreciate his professionalism and eagerness to help us out on a couple of occasions. The rooms are clean, bathrooms nothing special, no separate shower or jacuzzi tubs. There are a few but book quickly. I did not like the main floor patio which went directly out to a natural area. One day one of our family saw a snake in the hallway which entered a guest room through a tiny crack in the door. There are lots of swimming pools, easy access to the beach, the sand is rougher than other resorts in the area, small stones almost like gravel in parts. This is a huge Resort and we never saw any golf carts or trains to take anyone around. The evening entertainment is only at the theater and not very good no other live music or anything was offered except at the mall but there were no tables and the bar is around the corner.

    “Wedding/vacation”

This was our third time at the resort and yet again we had an amazing experience. We got married this trip and had the exceptional help from Mariely the wedding planner. Everything turned out perfectly and we would recommend this resort to anyone for a vacation and a wedding venue. At the colonial buffet we had the pleasure of being served by Moises Guerra. We had him five nights in a row and he was absolutely exceptional. His service was fast, friendly and entertaining. The pools at this resort are large and I have never seen them crowded. The restaurants are incredible and entertainment done very well. My only downfall of this resort is room service can be very slow which I link the the size of the resort. We stayed in an ocean front premium room which gave us a great view of the pool and ocean. I would definitely stay in this room again. Another perk with booking a premium room was daily access to the spa and fitness centre. The Turkish bath which they include in there water circuit therapy was amazing. I was upset I only learned about this the third day into my trip. It was an amazing way to start the day. It included a sauna, steam room, cold pool, hot pool, and outdoor warm pool which had 8 different types of back massages. If your still reading please take our recommendation as we have stayed at several resorts in the area. The Barcelo is an exceptional resort which we would recommend to any type of traveller.
