    “Great resort but ...”

My family and I just wrapped up a one week vacation at the Barcelo Maya Colonial. Our stay was a great experience all around however no place is perfect. The al e carte Italian restaurant called La Trattoria was a lunch bag let down but the Spanish and Japanese restaurants were great. Avoid the Spanish house wine served by the glass as it is not fit to drink. The room was good, the beach was great and we were close to all the popular off-site excursions. I would recommend not taking the hotel shuttle to Playa del Carmen because it includes spending two hours at a local jewelry factory and tequila store - both of which are over priced tourist traps. Also note that when we first arrived there was a plate of fresh grapes and a bottle of tequila and anise placed on the table in our room. I assumed it was all complimentary but I was wrong. I had to pay for the liquor at check out and it wasn't cheap. I still recommend this resort to any family planning a winter vacation.

“This is my second year in a row at Barcelo.”

As was the case last time, our visit was awesome! This year we brought other friends with us and they too felt it was an excellent resort. There are so many options of things to do and a wide variety of place to eat. I found the food to be excellent as always but particularly enjoyed the Captain Morgan buffet for lunch. Different things are important to different people so ill go through a few things. Beaches are really nice and the resort in general is extremely clean. There is an amazing coral reef that you can snorkel around with a wide variety of beautiful sea life including turtles and stingrays .There are also areas that are rock and coral free and great for kids and adults alike. There was never a shortage of chairs and towels were taken every night to ensure an opportunity to sit pretty much anywhere next day. There are so many pools. Some are adult only , some mixed and the kids area is SO amazing that I want to go back with my grandchildren. There are at least two swim up bars. The a la carte restaurants are all excellent and it would be hard to recommend one over another.Personally I liked the Tokyo ( there are actually two but this one is in the mall and it is amazing ) The Seafood was also outstanding. I cant say anything negative about any of the al a cart dining but these was definitely outstanding. Personally we had no problem booking our reservations and we were able to book all of them between 5.30 and 6.30 which was what I liked. Having said that , the buffet was also excellent with a great variety of food items and themes each evening. Having been there last year we had out favourite waiters and two of which I feel deserved a mention Jose Arcos and Victoriano Tun Pat. Always smiling and attentive to refills / coffee and of course mimosas ! The rooms were always clean and if I had to complain about something it would be facecloths ( or lack of them ) other than that the ladies were delightful. I had the misfortune to develop some nasty blisters in my first few days and they had an on hand medical attendants who were outstanding to redress my wounds every day ( no charge) The Wifi. could be an issue if it was important to you. Its free in certain areas at certain times of the day or you can purchase it for $10 a day but its not always easy to assess. I would like to see a free Shuttle to Playa del Carmen ( without having to stop at the Silver store ) or better yet to another smaller village close by where one could actually contribute directly to the" locals" I personally enjoyed the activities at the pool .Zumba classes water aerobics and a variety of other things throughout the day. I will post pictures of my trip and will actually be going back in two weeks for another visit

    “Secret piece of paradise!”

My fiancé and I went here as a prehoneymoon getaway. It was our first time in Mexico and our first time at an all inclusive so I can't say we have much to compare it to, but I will list out the things we loved and things we didn't. LOVED 1. We got the oceanfront room package and we thought it was well worth the extra $300 for the week. The room was huge, views were great. There was a hammock on the balcony and a stand up shower. Everything was so clean and housekeeping kept it that way our whole stay. 2. The pool area was so clean. There were always chairs open and because the pool was so big, we were able to sit far away from the spring breakers at the resort and still able to relax in peace and quiet. They had Zumba everyday by the pool and water aerobics. Always something to do. 3. The beach was gorgeous. No seaweed or nasty stuff in the water. Just calm clear blue as far as the eye could see! The sand was so soft. Every morning there would be workers sifting out the rocks and such from the sand. It was awesome. 4. From having the oceanfront package, we got discounts on excursions and activities which we had not planned on doing. We ended up going to the city of Tulum, swimming in a cenote, ATVing in the jungle and my fiancé went jet skiing in the ocean. That was all awesome and super inexpensive with the discounts (the excursion to Tulum, ATVing and swimming in the cenote was $200 total and that was for an 8 hour day and the jet skiing was $65). 5. The fitness center was absolutely amazing. Brand new equipment, huge space with lots of classes and such. We were huge fans and wish our gym at home was half as good as this one! 6. The whole resort was beyond clean. There were always employees cleaning something. The bathrooms all smelt like bleach in the morning, they were never dirty ( even after a day worth of people going in and out in the pool are ). Simply pristine. THINGS WE WERENT CRAZY ABOUT 1. We went to the buffets for breakfast and lunch. We tipped the server $10 the first day we were there for lunch and he hooked us up all vacation which was awesome ( brought us cool shots, kept up on our water/coffee/alcoholic beverages ). The food wasn't horrible by any means but it wasn't the best. With our oceanfront package, we got to eat at the fancier restaurants for free. We went to the steakhouse which was just nasty ( our stripsteaks looked like flat hamburger patties and they were so fatty we couldn't even cut into them to eat them - salad bar was good though ), Kyoto ( hibachi ) was fantastic, Mexicana Lindo ( Mexican food ) was our favorite ( the server brought us shots on fire, a tequila bar on wheels, sombreros and the food was to die for ) and the last night we went to La Fuente which was Spanish food and we didn't like it at all ( this one was a matter of personal preference ). 2. If you got a good bartender, the drinks were amazing. Some bartenders just made the drinks so strong they tasted disgusting. That was what I aimed for in my college days, but as an adult, I prefer to have 10 good tasting drinks to get a buzz over 1 nasty drink. We tipped pretty well and sometimes it made the bartenders love us and make us good consistent drinks, and sometimes it didn't matter. By the pool bar, in the morning the drinks were amazing and by the afternoon when it got really busy, the drinks were gross. OVERALL- We have decided this place is our secret paradise. It never felt crowded, and when I talk about going here with my friends and family at home, no one has ever heard of it, but it is a truly amazing resort. We booked on cheap Caribbean, flew Aeromexico and I was beyond happy with the whole stay. Can't wait to go visit other Barcelo family resorts (they're all over!!) and go back to Riviera Maya :) SOME SIDE TIPS 1. Bring US dollars because as soon as the servers/bartenders see the US money, they want to be your best friend. 2. If you get the oceanfront room package or go to the fancier restaurants, make reservations as soon as you check in. We had to eat around 7pm every night because everything was full ( we usually eat at like 5 and waiting until 7 was a struggle ). 3. If at all possible, do an excursion. Even just one - it was worth it to see Mexico outside of the resort and touristy areas.

“Fantastic place to vacation! Our 7th time at this resort!”

We love the Barcelo Maya Colonial for a relaxing vacation. We cannot say enough about this resort, it is our 7th time of vacationing here, together with our two daughters, and we hope to return again next year! This resort is excellent for families, couples young and old and also a beautiful setting for Weddings, there is something here for everyone. The sandy beach is very long which is great for walking. The beach, grounds, pools and resort are beautifully manicured and immaculately kept. The staff are hard working, friendly, accommodating and polite and we have always received excellent service. This year we were upgraded to Premium for being loyal customers, and received extra special service from Brenda Silva and Idalia Galeana, they were very helpful and always went out of their way to accommodate us, thank you to you both for making this our best vacation yet! The food is good, we especially enjoy the breakfast buffet and the a la carte restaurants, our favourite being Japanese, Italian and Steak. We look forward to seeing all our friends at Barcelo Colonial again next year, thank you once again to you all for making our vacation a wonderful experience, with many wonderful memories to treasure. Olah to you all!

“BIG resort, poor ocean view rooms”

A BIG resort. Plenty of pools, restaurants, when they say they have a mall - it's almost like you are in a mall off the property. (There is mini golf, bowling, arcade games, outside market area with vendors.) We love big resorts as we typically don't leave the property for a week, We traveled with 2 kids (4 & 8) • Food was good. Plenty of restaurants. They almost have 2 locations of every one (2 seafood, 2 jap, 2 Italian). Italian and Japanese were the best. We didn't eat at the Spanish one. We would have defiantly skipped the MX one. The better trendier décor ones are in the newer mall area. Only ate in restaurants at night not at the buffet. • Drinks were good. But if you wanted the premium (even though we had premium bracelet on - you still had to ask for the premium - ie., kaluha vs the fake kaluha. And then it was like they didn’t understand what you were talking about. I am used to an extensive slushy drink menu with FUN names and combinations and my goal is to try every one before I leave. This was not the case here. They had a small printed drink menu that was not readily available. When we did find one there were only about 5 slushy drinks on the list. Long waits at the pool bars. No service on the beach that I saw. They come get garbage but didn’t serve drinks. There was pool service. • Beach – water was beautiful but you needed for find a place that you could walk in without the LARGE bolder like rocks that you could trip on or stub your toe. • Pools were big and nice and there plenty of them. Kids loved the play structure in the kids pool near the topical/colonial. Kids and I went to the pirates “water park” $20 per person! The FREE pool play structure by our hotel was much better than that! MUCH better. No wonder why the pirates water park always looked empty. • Room was OK. We were in Colonial which had not been updated but was decent. Even though we had an ocean view/front – you could not see the ocean because of all the palm trees in the way and we were set WAY back from the beach. Tried to move but they gave us few options that were also behind palm trees. Most if not all have an obstructive view not matter what building you go to. The Beach property seemed to have more updated rooms on the "Ocean front rooms only" but not throughout. Beach ocean front had hot tubs on the balcony which took up a lot of room. Not sure worth the space. Not like you could even sit in the hot tub and have a great view – you would have a great view of a palm tree. I think there were other buildings that the ocean front rooms were updated as well, but ours were not. No liquor in the room. Only had beer. Room was clean. Beds were fine. • Grounds were well-kepted. Eating areas were clean. Buffets were clean. I even noticed that they removed ALL their servicing utensils at the buffet and replaced ALL with fresh ones in the middle of buffet hours. loved to see that. • Shows at night were ok. Only issue was they stared at 9/9:30 – kids (and we) were super tired by then after a full day of fun in the sun. • Premium club – when you check in you go into a nice air conditioned room behind glass that always had good liquor and snacks. We went there as our front desk -to change dinner reservations and ask for info AND to get good PREMIUM liquor. I don’t think we would go back. Mainly because we like to sit on our balcony and have a cocktail and SEE/HEAR the ocean.
