    “Excellent resort for family vacation”

The resort is about 1 hour drive from the airport. It is a part of a huge Barcelo complex with multiple resorts. We got access to all the resorts except of the Mayan Palace. The resort is planned very nicely with easy access to everything. It was just a couple of minutes walk from our building (Yucatan) to the lobby and to the beach and pools. The place is maintained very well. The rooms are clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. The kids pool is excellent with a very nice mini water park. The beach is very nice with a lot of shady places. The snorkeling is also good right by the beach. The bars are not crowded and it literally takes you a minute to get yourself a drink. The selection of premium drinks is unbelievable - probably the best I ever seen in any resort. They had a very good and expensive tequila (Don Julio) in every bar even on by the pool. Also, if you like Scotch they had Chivas Regal, Johnnie Walker, Ballantine's. Also a good variety of aged Rum and premium Vodka. The buffets have a nice selection of dishes however it is pretty much the same every night. I wish they had a better selection of the seafood. We went to 3 a la carte restaurants: 1. Mexican Lindo - nothing special; with the same dishes as from the buffet. The service was also unprofessional. They served us our drinks after they brought our appetizers. 2. Seafood Marenostrum - very good restaurant located in the Colonial lobby!!! They served grilled lobster, lamb chops, mussels etc. We took lobster and it was cooked really well. The service was very professional and fast. Our waiter Santiago Farris was very helpful and he made our visit very enjoyable. 3. Santa Fe steakhouse - the best a la carte restaurant I ever been in the all inclusive resorts. We ordered lamb chops, rib eye steak and NY steak. It was cooked exactly as we ordered and the quality of the meat was simply excellent. We even decided to tip the chef. Our waiter Alexander Guzman also did an excellent job by making our dinner a very memorable experience. Thank you Alexander! ========== THE NEGATIVE ================= There is no free internet in the lobby or in the rooms. Even if you decide to pay it's really not very good as you need to login every time you use it. We travelled with a 15 month baby and I had to ask 4 times during 3 hours to bring a baby crib to our room. 2 times our room was left undone even though we put a "Please Clean" note. 2 times our minibar was not refilled and we had to call the reception to ask for it. It was almost impossible to get hold of the reception when you make a call from your room. They had the "Reception" button on the phone but when you use it nobody answers. When we complained they said that we needed to use another number. But how should I know? I hope that somebody from the managers reads my review and fixes the negatives. The resort is really awesome and I right about the negatives only in the hope that somebody takes action. We loved our stay and we would definitely come back.

“loved the multiple pools, dining rooms and never a lack of beach lounges”

The location is a bit out of the way from the Cancun airport, but the accommodations were great, very comfy big beds. the hotel and gardens and beach area was kept very clean. The staff were very diligent and helpful. we would absolutely stay here again.Only downside to the hotel was internet, or lack of. for a 5 star hotel wifi should have been free and accessible in the rooms.

“Awesome resort for family with small kids”

We just came back from the Barcelo Maya Tropical and it was awesome. We were there with our 2 kids : 4 years old and 6 years old. The swimming pool are gigantics so you never feel squeezed and the kids could jump without splashing anyone. They have a very nice water park with a lot of slides. For the restaurants with reservations, the food was delicious. You have 4 choices to make. We went to the : Italian (Capri), spanish (La Fuente), and japonese (in the Mall, Tokyo) and steakhouse (Santa Fe). That's nice to have access to others hotels restaurant. We took the bus to travel between them since the kids would love to get a ride. And it's beautiful with the stars at night. You can also walk, it's a 5 minutes distance walk. But one thing that we didn't like at all in all the restaurants : the service is TOO fast. At one point, we still had our appetizers in front of us and they arrived with our steaks !! You always have the feeling that you have to eat fast to leave the place to someone else after. And they also are pushing too hard on getting us to order a wine from the wine card. The house wine is just ok for us ans we had to argue for 5 minutes each time. For the buffet, there is a LOT of choices. Donuts and churros for the breakfast, all the family enjoyed it so much. But not enough mexicain real food, I would have taken more tortillas, sauces and less international food. Don't hesitate to go see the shows in the 2 theatres available. During our week, 2 nights were private events so we couldn't go. Instead we went to the Beach/Caribe theatre and it was the Fantasia (like at Walt Disney) so the kids were sooooo happy ! And the other night it was really good also with the Funktastic theme. But all the shows have the same pattern with a little orchestra behind and singing people with dancers. It could be improved from one night to another. The beach is awesome. The sand is so soft, we built so many castles. And a good thing to do with kids what to bring small bread and feed the fishes. You can do it directly at the dock with the boats. Some people even go see the fishes and turtles there when doing some snorkeling. Instead we just went into the ocean in front of the Tropical and there were always a spot with a lot of fishes so we swam with them, so much fun ! And you have to go near the Palace Hotel if you want to see some turtles. We had some rain during our vacation so we went to the Maya Mall. There are arcades and bowling alleys. The bowling is way too expensive (15 US/person). The mini-putt is free during the day and a lot of fun. Don't go to Pirates Island, it's also too expensive for only 3 slides and they seemed more for adults then for young kids. Free wifi only available in the Maya Mall from 10h to 13h. Or you have to pay for it in your room. We would return there anytime !

“~~Our Third Consecutive Year, and the Fourth Year Already Booked~~”

This was our third consecutive year traveling to Barceló Tropical during spring break, and once again it exceeded our expectations. I traveled with two 17 year olds and three 18 year olds, some of which have been to Barcelo Tropical during spring break before, and therefore asked to go back and bring friends. I booked our reservation on Barceló.com for the first time, and things couldn't of went any smoother. I booked at the Tropical and asked for the rooms to face the theater and to be in close proximity, all of which were honored. I booked our airline independently (Sun Country). Upon check-in, I indicated to the front desk lady this was our third consecutive stay and asked if we could be granted any sort of upgrade, and she indicated she could give us two free wifi codes for our stay and that we could obtain them in Premium Guest Services. Upon walking into Premium Guest Services, Jessica, the lady we worked with in 2016 when we were CP, was sitting at the desk and right away recognized us, as we did her. When we told Jessica we were there to obtain our two free wifi passes, she picked up the phone and shortly thereafter hung up telling us she was going to upgrade all six of us to Club Premium. What a great surprise!! She was not able to upgrade us to a Jr. Suite, but was able to give us everything else that went with Club Premium, which we were totally appreciative of. (When booking this stay in October 2016 there were no Jr. Suites available as the resort was full, so we booked a Superior room.) As like last year, any questions we had or anything we needed help with throughout our stay we would go to Premium Guest Services and Jessica or one of the other girls would always assist in a kind and caring manner. Never once did we feel we couldn't go to them and not get things taken care of. Jessica does an exemplary job and needs to be commended for the service she provides! We were able to book a la carte meals for each of the nine nights we were there, and each was a great experience. We were even able to ask for and receive the Mayan coffee experience at the Mexican restaurant. We were placed on the second floor of the Yucatan building, which appeared to be more musty smelling and damper then the third floor room we had last year. But, we aren't in our rooms other than to sleep and get ready for the evening so we didn't feel the need to ask for a different room (then again, you are in a tropical area and this is to be expected). The teens enjoyed the Tropical pool spring break scene each day we were there. The last two days we were there the Tropical pool had a DJ playing, which I thought was beneficial to the resort and the spring breakers as it kept the kids entertained. The security officers did their best trying to keep the under aged kids from drinking, but there is only so much they can do. I commend them for keeping the pool area and kids as safe as possible. The 18 year olds frequented the Jaguar and the 17 year olds frequented Strikers nightly. Great mix of kids at each place; it is nice the almost 18 year olds have a place to go as well. Each of our rooms was given a resort credit when I made the booking (5% of what the room cost). There were four or five things you could use it on, and we picked the massage! What an amazing experience! I highly recommend using any type of spa service there if you can...that place is amazing. The workout center is out of this world as well, but was saddened that my 17 year old couldn't get in and needed to be 18. We took one afternoon off from the pool and went to Playa Del Carmen...always a fun and safe time. We walked to the hotel entrance (near the highway) and took the colectivo. The cost was $25 (US) for six of us one way. We felt very safe and loved the experience. Once again, Barceló didn't fail us. We love it here and are scared to try anything different due to the high quality of service and pristine resort. As stated above, already booked for spring break 2018...the countdown begins!

“Barcelo Maya Grand Resort is Indeed Grand!”

Slight name change to resort--it's now the Barcelo Maya Grand Resort. I've been here several times before, and continue to return. I haven't done an updated review, so here it is. Resort Sprawling resort along the Caribbean Sea. Expect to do lots of walking, but I like that, so no problem. The resort is really well laid out. Once you get the hang of it, you'll find getting around very easy. There are five different lobbies, some enclosed, some open air... all beautiful with water features and the sound of waterfalls everywhere. Off each lobby, there are typically two specialty restaurants, a lobby bar, and gift shops. From one end to the other you have the Maya, Caribe, Colonial, Tropical, and Palace. The Palace has all-suites, so probably more suitable for families with younger children; however, there is a private, adult-only pool with private bar, built-in water loungers. Quite a private oasis. The Caribe has been upgraded and offers private pools, hot tubs at the premium level. You can't really go wrong with any of the rooms--depends where you want to be situated. The Colonial, for example, is pretty much in the center, and close to the beautiful spa/fitness center. Beach Excellent! Let me know if you find a resort with a better beach in Riviera Maya. White sand, plenty of palm trees, situated on the Caribbean Sea in a cove. Typically small waves, clear water, and sandy bottom. You have to go out quite a ways to reach any coral areas. There are sections, especially near the Palace, that are rocky, but you have so much beach to choose from, you can always find smooth sand. Lounge chairs are plentiful, and we did not experience any problems finding them. Pools Very nice. They run together, with swim-up bars nicely spaced out between pools. Water temperature of pools was perfect. There are bridges and water sprays. There are a couple of kids water areas with slides. There is also a water park with bigger water slides and a wave rider feature, but this is not included--an extra $20 per person/per day USD. Pools also have many covered "palapas" for shade, as well as hammocks. Many people put towels on the chairs early to reserve them, but there are plenty of them spread around all the pool areas. Dining I suggest making your specialty dining (waiter service) right after you check in. Times fill up and you may find yourself having to eat earlier or later than you may want. The buffets are always an option, and personally, I have no problem with dining at the buffets. It is nice to have table service. Long pants are required for men. Overall, the food is very good, not top notch, but better than I expected. There is a 24 x 7 sports bar at one end of the Maya Mall, so you will never go hungry. Near each lobby area are air-conditioned buffets, and near the pools/beach are several open air buffets--very convenient and you can have lunch in bathing suits. Entertainment Not the best, but I didn't expect cruise ship level entertainment. There are two very nice teatro's (amphitheatres) with nightly shows. There are bars available and table service as well. There's also Jaguars, a disco, near the shopping plaza that opens at 10:30pm. Water Sports Included are Hobie Cats, kayaks, water trikes, snorkeling right from the beach. Banana boat rides, jet ski's, and parasailing are extra. Dolphins They've added a dolphin tank with free shows daily. Dolphin experiences are extra, but this is so convenient. Staff Friendly and accommodating. Most are bi-lingual. Transfers Used Lomas Travel, and they were very good, and reliable. Travel Agency I have to give a shout out to Happy Landings Travel out of Pennsylvania. I've been using them for years, and will continue. They are a pleasure to work with, and they are excellent. Overall I take different people each time I return, and so far, everyone loves this resort. Keep it a secret LOL. Definitely coming back to Barcelo !!
