Barceló Maya Tropical reviewed by on . Resort was great, room had a weird smell Pools, beach, common areas, shopping-they were great! The actual room is where my issue is. It had some kind of cooling system, but not an air conditioner that I know and love. The room stayed cool... Rating: 4

    “Post Christmas Holiday”

The Barcelo Grand is a solid 4-star resort that I easily give our family experience a 5 out of 5. This is a very family friendly resort with multiple children areas for kids to enjoy. The play areas are not small either, they are miniature water parks conveniently located next to the larger pools for the parents and older kids to enjoy. The resort is indeed grand and very well maintained. We took advantage of the whole resort, from the multiple pools, beach, restaurants, buffets, massages at the spa, playoff football at the sports bar, Flow Rider surf machine, tennis, paddle ball, basketball, bocce ball, and SUP. My wife says the spa is the nicest she has been in and I would agree. It was large, relaxing and very modern. The buffets were great and better than expected for an all-inclusive. The a-la-cart restaurants were great as well. There were no shortages of food or availability of drinks. We were impressed by the resort, that we are already planning our return for next year. We feel there is still a lot of activities and places on the resort that we were not able to experience in 1 week. I would be confident in recommending this resort to friends and family.

“Poor food, Musty smelling Room, Beautiful Scenery”

We spent over 5K to go on this vacation and left with much to be desired. Marginal food (tasteless despite the beautiful display) and a musty/mold smelling room put a damper on the gorgeous view and facilities. Good range of activities for kids. Gorgeous location. Clean overall. If you come to an all-inclusive resort for the service and food, you will be disappointed. If you come for the facilities, you will enjoy it.

Amazing resort and unbelievable views. Staff is very hardworking and friendly!! Francisco Antonio Perez Aguilar was one whose name i took down because he was so helpful! Such funny guy and so attentive and just great service! Exactly the kind of worker that makes the stay so enjoyable by going out of his way to help out! Most definitely would want to come back to this place! pools are clean and beautiful and the beach too...just AMAZING

“Beautiful Beach-severally lacking communication and service-they really dropped the ball New Years Eve”

We stayed at the Barceló Maya Tropical December 28, 2017-Jan 4, 2018 The beach at this resort is incredible and you can snorkel off the shore and see lots of interesting creatures. Good thing that our main reason for choosing this resort was the beach because as far as an all inclusive resort goes the rest of our experience was very disappointing. We arrived late as our flight was delayed but even though there was no line up check in was very slow Our room was fairly nice with a balcony with table and chairs but there was mold in the shower and around the whole upper rim of the sink. I spoke to the front desk about it and they said they would send the maid to deal with it. By late the next afternoon, after the maids had been there for the day, the problem still existed so I chased a maid down in the hallway and had her clean it as best she could. which made it a bit better, but didn't solve the problem. The maid service in general was very bad, they left garbage and cleaning rags lying around and didn't always vacuum the rug. I left them tips anyways because I realized that it probably wasn't their fault . The whole resort seemed to be severally understaffed. I had to take a roll of toilet paper in my beach bag to ensure that when I used the public washrooms around the resort I had paper, they were always out and never replenished The food was fairly good although they were often out of stuff and didn't always have the buffets all open when they were suppose to be which resulted in long line ups. We booked 2 meals at their speciality restaurants and the food was really good but again even though we had reservations we waited an incredibly long time to be seated. Most of the drinks were fairly good, although I suspect that the alcohol is watered down, but servers on the beach and around the pool were virtually non existent, I think once in the whole week did I have someone ask if I needed a drink when I wasn't actually standing at a bar to wait for the bartender to serve me. Service at the buffets was not very good either , not enough wait staff for the number of guests. NEW YEARS EVE DISASTER We were very much looking forward to celebrating the new year and looked through the events book to see what the resort had planned and saw that there was a special buffet and a special show planned for the evening. Looked great, to bad they forgot to say that you needed reservations. . When we booked our special restaurant meals at guest services they asked what our plans were for New Years eve and we said that we would go to the buffet cause it looked great , again no mention of requiring reservations. Imagine our surprise when we showed up at the buffet and were told we couldn't eat there because we didn't have a reservation, so I asked to make one and they said there were non available. , when we asked where we could eat they did not have an answer all the buffets were running the same program . So lets have guests in the middle of nowhere and not supply them with any food, way to go Barceló! Lucky for us there were some nice people who also did not have reservations but needed to have food for medical reasons that the manager agreed to seat and the y pretended we were with them , so we got to eat. Earlier in the day I had seen a table set up with the name of the evening show on it so I stopped to inquire what it was all about. They said they were taking reservations for the evening New Years eve show so I asked to make one realizing that without one we wouldn't be able to get in . I was told I could make one but in order to do so I would have to purchase a bottle of Champagne ( so much for all inclusive) I decided to purchase the champagne as I did not want to sit in my room for the evening. I chose the cheapest bottle they offered about $60.00 US . When it came time for the show , we were told to arrive at 9 for our reservation, we went to the theatre and stood in line for over an hour to be seated , when we were seated they brought our bottle of champagne and plunked it on the table, no ice bucket, I requested for it to be put on ice and they said they ran out of buckets and were getting more. An hour went by and still no bucket so my son went and requested one again. Again he was told they were out of buckets but would bring one. Time went by and I ended up going and standing by the kitchenette door and insisting until someone gave me an ice bucket. The show was good, I feel sorry for the people that had "reservations" and didn't get seated before it started. The event was poorly organized, pretty sure they knew how many bottles of champagne they sold and should have had it on ice prior to the event. There was also no service for drinks at the show. Again a case of not enough staff, to sell "reservations" to a show at an all inclusive with no option of anywhere else to go and then handle the event so badly , shame on you Barceló. By the way some one told me they had to pay $60.00 per person US for reservations at the New Years Eve buffets. Lets charge people that have no other option for food for their food New Years Eve ( and not really let them know we are going to do it) again shame on you Barceló. People had to take taxis into town to eat. Most resorts offer free wifi at least in their lobbies not this one, you can acess wifi at the mall between 10 and 3 when it is working, otherwise it will cost you $12,00 Us per day per device. All in all we really enjoyed the beach , would I go back to this resort? Maybe, if there was a really good sale price on it, otherwise not. Their customer service and communication is severally lacking. Beautiful beach, beautiful facilities, bad customer service and bad management.

    “Beautiful Resort”

Despite our reservation being switched from the Colonial to the Tropical it made no difference since the resorts are so close and share many common amenities. The whole staff from the servers, to the bar staff to the room staff and to the ground keepers were very friendly. This is is HUGE and beautiful resort complex. We would definitely stay here again.
