    “Hotel Review and More...”

    We have stayed at this particular resort twice, two years in a row. Both experiences were very similar. Purchased our first trip there through Experia and the second one directly with the hotel (online). The hotel is a good hour by car from Cancun Airport. First time there we rented a car (through Expedia including insurance), but once we picked up the car at the airport, we were told it was not valid and felt pressured to buy it through them so we did. Because there's so much to do there at the resort, we did not leave at all so the car was practically just parked there during our stay. We paid close to $350 US Dollars for about 4 days of rental and felt it was a big waste of money. This second time there, we hired a taxi to take us from the airport to the hotel and it cost us about $80 dollars and were offered a return rate of $50 dollars. We decided not to use it and instead hired a taxi directly from the hotel and paid $65 to return to the airport. The hotel itself is very good. The service from all the employees is outstanding. All go the extra mile to make sure one has a great stay. We did not use the spa, so cannot comment. Even though all is included, we did tip all our waiters/waitresses. A couple of dollars go a long way for these employees. They all seem very happy to be working there. We understand Barcelo treats them very well and that's nice to hear; however, they don't make a ton of money, that's why tipping is very much appreciated by them. We could not get our first choice of upscale restaurant reservation so we went to the first sitting (5:30 pm) and were lucky to be seated since a family did not show up and their spot was given to us. The rooms were cleaned daily and a candy was left on the bed every night, except for the last night of our stay. The room service lad may have known that we were departing the next morning, and the service lacked. Coffee pot tray was not cleaned, coffee was not replaced, and toilet paper was lacking. We had to call the lobby to send us coffee. It took talking to 4 different people and about 5 hours to get a coffee refill sent to the room. The room seems stuffy. The mattresses are very old. Barcelo should invest in replacing those as well as update the old bathtubs. We also found not to be too many power outlets in the room. We only found two available outlets to charge our phones. A third outlet is used for the TV set and the coffee pot. The buffet was very good for breakfast and dinner, but not so much for lunch. The amount of food variety at lunch was poor. The dinner is themed, one night it was Mexican night, another Italian night. Tons of prosciutto and cheeses. The buffet huts by the pools don't have good quality food. The activities listed on the boards by the pool depend if enough people show up for it, so it's not something to count on. Beach soccer was moved to the back, to the regular grass soccer field, because people were playing volleyball at the beach. One big complain is that wi-fi is not included with your stay. They offer it free at certain times and only in certain places. It should be free 24/7 in the lobby, at the least. While there, for $15 we took a taxi from the hotel to Akumal Beach. While it's true that most people at Akumal want you to hire them to take you to see the turtles, many visitors just rent a life vest and goggles and sneak in themselves. It can be done if you don't get caught. The guides' prices vary a lot. Where the taxi drops you off, they give you a "deal" of $40 p/p. As you walk towards the beach, the prices lower. We decided that since renting the snorkeling gear and the life vest was going to be about $8 p/p, for $15 p/p we hired a guide to take us to see the turtles. We went to the little shack on the beach where for $15 it included the life vest, gear, and guide. We got to see 3-4 turtles, manta rays, and a couple of colorful fish.

    “Great service”

    My family and I had dinner at the buffet the first night we arrived. Had great waiters, Byron Zarrabal and Aquiles Sanchez, who went above and beyond in ensuring we had a great time. If this is how the rest of our stay will be, we know will be having a great time!

    “Spectacular for a family vacation”

    The resort, staff, rooms, service, activities and food exceeded our expectations. We can't wait to book another trip! We enjoyed afternoons by the pool and in the sea, soccer, Zzumba, fantastic dinners, friendly staff and fantastic shows at night! We made so many great family memories.

    “fell way below my expectations!!!”

    When I booked this vacation it was on the recommendations of close friends of mine that have stayed in the resort and returned home with positive reviews. Wish I could say the same about my experience. The property is beautiful and lots to discover however the service waaay waay below average completely marring the Barcelo brand. Check in was horrible,we were dropped off in the wrong lobby and after waiting in line to check in for 35+ mins we were finally told that. Then we had to wait another 30 mins to be moved to the correct lobby where we were told that the room only had a king bed, with a reservation that was booked well in advance with a confirmation for proper double occupancy (two beds). The manager stated that he would change the accommodations the next day, the next day never came. And the room was outdated and smelled like mould. The servers in the buffet and the snack bar outside the Vera-Cruz building pick and choose the customers that they would attend to. I waited over 30 mins one morning to get a cup of coffee after asking 3 times to have it delivered, while the same server asked the table next to mine at least 5 times if they needed their beverages refilled before delivering the cup of coffee. The only positive highlights from the trip was the property and the beach. However for the most part customer service was really poor. Other people that arrived the same day as myself also complained that their reservations were also messed up. For example a couple with 3 teenage children booked into a room with one king bed. I would never recommend this resort to anyone. And to even make a complaint while present was futile, the "managers" that they would direct you would just smile and pretend to write down your complaint so that you would leave. Also the sunwing rep that supposed to be in the lobby to help their customers was no where to be found for 2 days. I checked the lobby 2x on day 1 & day 2 to confirm my shuttle pickup back to the airport and it wasn't until the third day that I had the hotel call the sunwing head office that we were directed to another lobby at the far end of the property even though the their own time schedule stated that they should be in this particular lobby. But of course the next day like clock work when I checked they were their at the scheduled time. Another incident took place while I was walking through the lobby a man yelled for help, his baby got injured, as I went in, my friend attended to the family, who were hysterical at this point I tried to phone the lobby to get some medical help. I was transferred 3 times, before someone could understand to send help. Not acceptable what if the situation was critical and time sensitive? Overall I was really upset by this terrible experience, this is my second time in Mexico and it was bad. I returned on the pretext, that since my first experience was great, this one would be too. But boy was I wrong. I don't appreciate paying top dollars to go to what they describe a premium hotel, with premium accommodations. To have to sleep on a cot, and be discriminated against when I need service.

    “Nice family vacation ”

    My family of 6 just stayed at this resort last week. We previously stayed at the Palace about 4 years ago but thought we'd try out this resort this time to save money. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how friendly the staff was. My older kids speak some Spanish and it was really neat seeing the staff interact with them and teach them words they didn't know. Finding something for everyone to do was key for us since our kids range in age from 18-1. This resort didn't fail us. This is the first time we didn't leave the resort for an excursion and I was worried we'd get bored but everyone kept busy and had a great time. My husband and older kids loved the beach volleyball and water polo. The dolphin show was nice too and my daughter got to swim with them which made her day! Riding the double decker bus that shuttles between resorts was a fun experience too! The rooms are decent, nothing grand which was fine for us since we'd prefer to be outside. The beds were super uncomfortable though. The floors can get VERY slippery. We had to put towels down so our toddler wouldn't fall. We had a crib for our 1 year old which worked out good. It was a nice size and was sturdy. The restaurants were good, I'd recommend making reservations early. We didn't have any complaints except with the Italian restaurant at the mall. The service was super slow. Some other guests had been waiting for so long they just up and left before the food got to the table. Overall it was a good family trip that we'll remember!

    A discount* or promotional code (also appears as “promo code”) is a combination of letters and/or numbers that gives a discount on the normal rate. If you have a discount code, enter it when booking and you will receive a discount on your booking. Once you have entered this code, the prices shown in step 1 of the booking process will already include the relevant discount. 

    The discount does not apply to prices on extras and/or extra services, neither does it apply to prices on last available rooms. Only one discount code per booking is permitted. The maximum amount of accumulated discount will be at most 25% off the rate for hotels in Latin America and at most 20% off the rate for Europe and Mediterranean hotels.
