Las Fallas: art, fire and Valencian tradition

The most anticipated moment of the year for Valencians has arrived: the Fallas, some very special fiestas that are celebrated from the 15th to the 19th of March. During these days, the city is filled with joy (more than usual!), music, color and, of course, noise, a lot of noise. It is a unique tradition in which gunpowder is the main protagonist.

Music bands can be heard on the streets and people can be seen dancing. Decorative lights illuminate every corner. Places of churros with chocolate appear everywhere and, on every street, authentic works of art known as els Ninots stand.

It’s a week when the city is awake for 24 hours: Valencia is not at hand, because you don’t want to lose even a second of this moment that you’ve been waiting for.

These works of art, the Ninots, are giant monuments of stone cardboard that represent the work of the entire year by fallen artists (yes, there is a profession dedicated exclusively to the Fallas). Through them, satire and social criticism are shown.

Each year 800 fallen monuments are planted in 400 different locations in the city. This act, known as the plant, took place on March 15th. Then, they enter a contest where only one will be the winner. Finally, on the 19th of March, everything culminates with the night of the cremà, when these impressive structures light up, illuminating the sky of Valencia.

Time:

  • From March 14 to March 19, every morning at 9:00 a.m.

Duration:

  • 3 hours

Meeting point:

  • Plaza del Ayuntamiento Tourism Office (Pl. de l’Ajuntament, 1, 46002 València, Valencia)

What do you need to know:

  • During the 14th and 15th, the tour will include chocolate and churros, as we cannot access the interior of the Fallas while they are in the installation process. The experience will follow the same planned itinerary, but with this additional detail to compensate for the restriction.
  • On the 17th, the tour will begin at the Torres de Serranos due to a scheduled event at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento for the morning, which will prevent access to the plaza. The route will be the same, but in reverse, ending at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento once the event has concluded.
Together let's take care of the environment and turn the future into a better destination. For a regenerative tourism.
