    “Beautiful beach, great holiday”

    We enjoyed the facilities and location on the beach at the Occidental. The beds were comfy, the pool was great, the grounds are well kept. I wish we’d have realized the windows opened before our final day there! There were plenty of loungers on the beach, by the pool; in the sun and out of the sun; which was excellent. The pool bar staff were great, even though we mostly drank soft drinks and water, they kept them coming! A shout out to Erick, our favourite waiter, “may we meet again!” All the staff were trying their best; however the restaurants were understaffed at the busiest times. Overall we enjoyed our week of R&R in the Mexican sun.

    “Increasingly going downhill”

    this was our 5th stay at this hotel. Ever since it was purchased by Barcelo about 4 years ago, it's gotten increasingly worse. Wi-fi used to be included with your stay, now they charge you for it and don't even mention it upon check-in. We had to inquire and then were told we had to pay. After our first 7 day package of paying for the wi-fi, they couldn't just add our additional 2 nites, we had to pay (cash, umm......) for 3 more days even though we were leaving after 2 days. Forget about getting into the Japenese restaurant if you want the grill (not the sushi). The let the Royal Club book all of the openings. I stayed in the "booking line" 45 minutes on 3 different ocassions, (1st in line) only to be turned away upon being told it was all booked. On that note, they now make you stand in line every morning to book one of the 3 restaurants. You must be in line very early in hopes of getting into one of the restaurants (and as noted above, forget the Japanese restaurant). One time, I got to the front of the line to be told that restaurant "was closed that night". They couldn't put up a notice to all the people wasting their time in line that one of the restaurants was closed? Lastly, the activity group is worse every year. There are little to NO announced activities. We go specifically to play beach volleyball. My husband and his friends had to go on their own to recruit players and make a game. Even when my husband was asked how they could do better and he said that they needed to announce activities, still, 8 days later.........still nothing. They appear to be trying to get a "younger" crowd at this resort, yet about 70% are still over 50. The music being played is either hiphop or sleepy time. Almost nothing to motivate the crowds. There are several excellent employees there...... but unfortunately, this was our last trip to the Occidental.

    “Best Vacation, amazing property.”

    Occidental Nuevo Vallarta exceeded our expectations on this first visit. The staff did everything to make our stay memorable. We loved the staffs associated with the Royal Level. Beach, food, drinks, entertainment and staff were amazing. Can’t wait to visit again.

    “Beautiful property”

    Lovely hotel. Food was good. Construction was going on. Very noisy during construction hours Entertainment was excellent. Loved the daytime Zuumba classes. Staff was extremely courteous and helpful! Great place!

    “Read Carefully; Not a Good Experience”

    This is perhaps the most difficult review I have written. The one star rating reflects many facets of our experience, but let me start with the good things. The location is great: wide, clean beach that for tens of meters remains shallow and safe. You can walk along it for miles. The staff is good, as long as this does not include management, which is where I think the problems begin. Indeed, from the beginning we were tainted by our having booked the hotel through bookit.com. Within minutes of arriving at the hotel that was patently very clear. Beginning with my wife not being able to receive mybarcelo credit for the stay, which, if an isolated incident, would be understandable. The next bubble to pop in our stay, which occurred a few minutes later, was finding out that we could not get free wifi, although every hotel affinity group we know offers that (Note: my wife and I typically spend about 120 days a year in hotels, about half in different hotels; we know a bit about affinity groups and hotels.). Again, the bookit.com issue was raised. Our room, note 229, was our next dreadful experience. We could not control the temperature and it was extremely cold. They sent people to check, but nothing happened. It’s still the first day and our next discovery was that there was no hot water in the shower! We complained about the room and asked to be changed to a different one- guess what – our bookit.com booking put us in a low category and we could not be given a different room. Fortunately, after the first night we managed to get blankets, but still no hot water in the evening. After the second night, they relented and gave us a new room that was much better, but how much effort should that take. It took my wife a huge amount and constantly lessened our experience. I seriously doubt we were the first to complain about these issues. As for other parts of the experience, we found the selection of beverages to be third rate. The house wine was unpalatable. On the one occasion when we did drink it, the white was poured over a bed of ice and the red also had ice added. After that, when we wanted wine we chose Mexican wines, which were priced well. Even that, they ran out of our favorite wine the second night we asked for it. The one star clincher occurred on the last night. By then, we had come to terms with third rate drinks, gotten a new room and even had free wifi (somehow the previously stated policy had changed in the wake of my wife’s admonitions). At dinner, we met a man who had come to the resort with his family for several years. He said he would never come back again. He thought the management had changed and the experience had been diminished. With that affirmation, this is clearly not a destination I would ever recommend.
